    Does the mind map learning strategy facilitate information retrieval and critical thinking in medical students?

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>A learning strategy underutilized in medical education is mind mapping. Mind maps are multi-sensory tools that may help medical students organize, integrate, and retain information. Recent work suggests that using mind mapping as a note-taking strategy facilitates critical thinking. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a relationship existed between mind mapping and critical thinking, as measured by the Health Sciences Reasoning Test (HSRT), and whether a relationship existed between mind mapping and recall of domain-based information.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In this quasi-experimental study, 131 first-year medical students were randomly assigned to a standard note-taking (SNT) group or mind map (MM) group during orientation. Subjects were given a demographic survey and pre-HSRT. They were then given an unfamiliar text passage, a pre-quiz based upon the passage, and a 30-minute break, during which time subjects in the MM group were given a presentation on mind mapping. After the break, subjects were given the same passage and wrote notes based on their group (SNT or MM) assignment. A post-quiz based upon the passage was administered, followed by a post-HSRT. Differences in mean pre- and post-quiz scores between groups were analyzed using independent samples <it>t</it>-tests, whereas differences in mean pre- and post-HSRT total scores and subscores between groups were analyzed using ANOVA. Mind map depth was assessed using the Mind Map Assessment Rubric (MMAR).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>There were no significant differences in mean scores on both the pre- and post-quizzes between note-taking groups. And, no significant differences were found between pre- and post-HSRT mean total scores and subscores.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Although mind mapping was not found to increase short-term recall of domain-based information or critical thinking compared to SNT, a brief introduction to mind mapping allowed novice MM subjects to perform similarly to SNT subjects. This demonstrates that medical students using mind maps can successfully retrieve information in the short term, and does not put them at a disadvantage compared to SNT students. Future studies should explore longitudinal effects of mind-map proficiency training on both short- and long-term information retrieval and critical thinking.</p

    Teaching the science of learning

    The science of learning has made a considerable contribution to our understanding of effective teaching and learning strategies. However, few instructors outside of the field are privy to this research. In this Tutorial Review, we focus on six specific cognitive strategies that have received robust support from decades of research: spaced practice, interleaving, retrieval practice, elaboration, concrete examples, and dual coding. We describe the basic research behind each strategy and relevant applied research, present examples of existing and suggested implementation, and make recommendations for further research that would broaden the reach of these strategies

    Microbiome to Brain:Unravelling the Multidirectional Axes of Communication

    The gut microbiome plays a crucial role in host physiology. Disruption of its community structure and function can have wide-ranging effects making it critical to understand exactly how the interactive dialogue between the host and its microbiota is regulated to maintain homeostasis. An array of multidirectional signalling molecules is clearly involved in the host-microbiome communication. This interactive signalling not only impacts the gastrointestinal tract, where the majority of microbiota resides, but also extends to affect other host systems including the brain and liver as well as the microbiome itself. Understanding the mechanistic principles of this inter-kingdom signalling is fundamental to unravelling how our supraorganism function to maintain wellbeing, subsequently opening up new avenues for microbiome manipulation to favour desirable mental health outcome

    Remodeling of the connective tissue microarchitecture of the lamina cribrosa in early experimental glaucoma.

    PURPOSE: To characterize the trabeculated connective tissue microarchitecture of the lamina cribrosa (LC) in terms of total connective tissue volume (CTV), connective tissue volume fraction (CTVF), predominant beam orientation, and material anisotropy in monkeys with early experimental glaucoma (EG). METHODS: The optic nerve heads from three monkeys with unilateral EG and four bilaterally normal monkeys were three dimensionally reconstructed from tissues perfusion fixed at an intraocular pressure of 10 mm Hg. A three-dimensional segmentation algorithm was used to extract a binary, voxel-based representation of the porous LC connective tissue microstructure that was regionalized into 45 subvolumes, and the following quantities were calculated: total CTV within the LC, mean and regional CTVF, regional predominant beam orientation, and mean and regional material anisotropy. RESULTS: Regional variation within the laminar microstructure was considerable within the normal eyes of all monkeys. The laminar connective tissue was generally most dense in the central and superior regions for the paired normal eyes, and laminar beams were radially oriented at the periphery for all eyes considered. CTV increased substantially in EG eyes compared with contralateral normal eyes (82%, 44%, 45% increases; P&lt;0.05), but average CTVF changed little (-7%, 1%, and -2% in the EG eyes). There were more laminar beams through the thickness of the LC in the EG eyes than in the normal controls (46%, 18%, 17% increases). CONCLUSIONS: The substantial increase in laminar CTV with little change in CTVF suggests that significant alterations in connective and nonconnective tissue components in the laminar region occur in the early stages of glaucomatous damage

    Overexpression of the Mammalian Target of Rapamycin: A Novel Biomarker for Poor Survival in Resected Early Stage Non-small Cell Lung Cancer

    IntroductionThe best hope of cure for patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is surgical resection. However, even in stage IA patients, 30% die within 5 years. Further improvements in survival require a biomarker(s), which defines the subset of these patients destined to do badly so that they could be targeted for additional therapies. Here, we investigate whether the immunohistochemical expression of a key kinase implicated in lung cancer biology, the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) can predict survival outcome in patients with early stage resected NSCLC.Materials and MethodsOne hundred thirty-four patients with resected early stage (IA–IIB) NSCLC were pathologically reviewed centrally before staining for mTOR. Multiple variables including age, sex, stage, angioinvasion, lymph node status, and mTOR staining were assessed by univariate and multivariate analyses.ResultsStage (p = 0.044), lymph node status (p = 0.049), angioinvasion (p = 0.017), and mTOR staining (p = 0.007) were significant univariate predictors of poor survival. However, only angioinvasion (p = 0.016) and mTOR staining (p = 0.046) remained significant after multivariate analysis. Moreover, mTOR staining was the only variable to predict poor outcome in patients who either had negative lymph nodes (p = 0.016) or were stage IA (p = 0.0016).ConclusionsThe mTOR staining provides a new biomarker for poor outcome in early stage NSCLC and could enable resected stage IA patients to be selected for novel therapies possibly with an mTOR inhibitor
