Win started teaching at the Darwin Infant School in 1954 where the work was challenging. The Scottish country dancing class which Win helped found provided lively company along with the Musical Comedy Society. Married to James H. B. Bell in 1956, Winifred left teaching to start their family of two daughters and four sons. In those days there were no cr?ches in Darwin, except for a small play centre in Smith Street, where a child could be left for an hour or so while visiting the dentist. With six children in eight years Win felt she could not have managed taking up paid work and stayed at home for approximately eighteen years. Win did volunteer work at the pre-school and primary school tuckshops, committee and fun raising activities at the local schools. In 1975 Win joined the group of volunteers who started the adult literacy program at the Reading Centre with the Department of Education. She resumed her career as a secondary, remedial, resource and relief teacher until 1983. Since 1981 Win worked the coordinating committee for the Duke of Edinburgh's award scheme, set up for youths aged between fourteen and twenty-four years.Educato
