Functional approach to quantum friction: effective action and dissipative force
We study the Casimir friction due to the relative, uniform, lateral motion of
two parallel semitransparent mirrors coupled to a vacuum real scalar field,
. We follow a functional approach, whereby nonlocal terms in the action
for , concentrated on the mirrors' locii, appear after functional
integration of the microscopic degrees of freedom. This action for ,
which incorporates the relevant properties of the mirrors, is then used as the
starting point for two complementary evaluations: Firstly, we calculate the {
in-out} effective action for the system, which develops an imaginary part,
hence a non-vanishing probability for the decay (because of friction) of the
initial vacuum state. Secondly, we evaluate another observable: the vacuum
expectation value of the frictional force, using the { in-in} or Closed Time
Path formalism. Explicit results are presented for zero-width mirrors and
half-spaces, in a model where the microscopic degrees of freedom at the mirrors
are a set of identical quantum harmonic oscillators, linearly coupled to $\phi
Effect of Coulomb interactions on the optical properties of doped graphene
Recent optical conductivity experiments of doped graphene in the infrared
regime reveal a strong background in the energy region between the intra and
interband transitions difficult to explain within conventional pictures. We
propose a phenomenological model taking into account the marginal Fermi liquid
nature of the quasiparticles in graphene near the neutrality point that can
explain qualitatively the observed features. We also study the electronic Raman
signal and suggest that it will also be anomalous.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

Classical communication cost of quantum steering
Quantum steering is observed when performing appropriate local measurements
on an entangled state. Here we discuss the possibility of simulating
classically this effect, using classical communication instead of entanglement.
We show that infinite communication is necessary for exactly simulating
steering for any pure entangled state, as well as for a class of mixed
entangled states. Moreover, we discuss the communication cost of steering for
general entangled states, as well as approximate simulation. Our findings
reveal striking differences between Bell nonlocality and steering, and provide
a natural way of measuring the strength of the latter.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure. See also arXiv:1603.xxxxx for related work by S.

In-service teachers’ didactic-mathematical knowledge on elementary algebraic reasoning. the case of the shanxi province of China
In this study, the Chinese in-service teachers’ didactic-mathematical knowledge on elementary algebraic reasoning is assessed using a questionnaire developed in Spain. The first aim is to diagnose the current situation in China of in-service primary school teachers’ knowledge regarding elementary algebra and its teaching. The second aim is to provide enlightenment to teacher training so as to make the concept of early algebra popularized among Chinese primary school teachers. The sample included 264 primary school teachers from the Shanxi province in China. The questionnaire consists of two parts: part 1 comprises 5 items about teachers’ gender, teaching experience, professional certificate, educational background, and region; part 2 comprises 25 items from the original version in English. The difficulty, discrimination indexes as well as reliability of the instrument have been determined, reflecting the psychometric properties of the instrument. The dependent variables include 7 aspects divided in 2 dimensionalities apart from the total score. The results reveal Chinese primary school teachers have solid knowledge of algebra but lack pedagogical knowledge in early algebra. This suggests that it would be necessary to set clear training objectives on the core idea of the algebra in national teacher training programs; in addition, our findings emphasize more attention should be given to teachers who have less than 10 years of teaching experience. Finally, we conclude teacher training would be more effective if highly experienced teachers––more than 20 years, became trainers to teach the practical modules
