The effect of intrathecal delivery of bone marrow stromal cells on hippocampal neurons in rat model of Alzheimer�s disease
Objective(s): Intracerebral injection of bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) is being investigated as a therapeutic tool to prevent Alzheimer's disease (AD). Our aim was to investigate the effects of BMSCs by intrathecal injection in AD rat model. Materials and Methods: BMSCs were obtained from the bone marrow of Wistar rat and transplanted into AD rat model via intrathecal injection. The rat model had received an injection of � amyloid into the hippocampus for histological and immunohistochemical studies. Results: Histological examination of the brains in transplanted rats compared to controls demonstrated the migration of BrdU-labeled BMSCs from the site of delivery, confirmed the differentiation of BMSCs transplanted cells into the cholinergic neurons, and increased number of healthy and decreased number of dark neurons. Conclusion: Our results showed that BMSCs intratechal administration could be a promising method for treatment of Alzheimer�s disease in rat model. © 2015, Iranian Journal of Basic Medical Sciences. The Molecular Gas Reservoirs of Galaxies: A comparison of CO(1-0) and dust-based molecular gas masses
We test the use of long-wavelength dust continuum emission as a molecular gas
tracer at high redshift, via a unique sample of 12, z~2 galaxies with
observations of both the dust continuum and CO(1-0) line emission (obtained
with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array and Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array,
respectively). Our work is motivated by recent, high redshift studies that
measure molecular gas masses (\ensuremath{\rm{M}_{\rm{mol}}}) via a calibration
of the rest-frame m luminosity () against the
CO(1-0)-derived \ensuremath{\rm{M}_{\rm{mol}}}\ of star-forming galaxies. We
hereby test whether this method is valid for the types of high-redshift,
star-forming galaxies to which it has been applied. We recover a clear
correlation between the rest-frame m luminosity, inferred from the
single-band, long-wavelength flux, and the CO(1-0) line luminosity, consistent
with the samples used to perform the m calibration. The molecular gas
masses, derived from , agree to within a factor of
two with those derived from CO(1-0). We show that this factor of two
uncertainty can arise from the values of the dust emissivity index and
temperature that need to be assumed in order to extrapolate from the observed
frequency to the rest-frame at 850. The extrapolation to
850 therefore has a smaller effect on the accuracy of \Mmol\
derived via single-band dust-continuum observations than the assumed
CO(1-0)-to-\ensuremath{\rm{M}_{\rm{mol}}}\ conversion factor. We therefore
conclude that single-band observations of long-wavelength dust emission can be
used to reliably constrain the molecular gas masses of massive, star-forming
galaxies at
Recurrent hepatitis in two iranian children: A novel (Q166R) mutation in EIF2AK3 leading to wolcott-rallison syndrome
Early-onset diabetes, liver dysfunction, growth retardation, spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia, and tendency to skeletal fractures due to osteopenia are characteristics of Wolcott-Rallison syndrome (WRS). Eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2α kinase (EIF2AK3) is the only known gene, which is responsible for this rare autosomal recessive disorder. Here, we report two siblings a girl and a boy with diabetes mellitus (DM) who presented in one and two months of age respectively. Recurrent self-limiting hepatitis developed later, and severe hepatic failure resulted in death of the first child. The second child visited was a 7.75 year old boy who had spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia and subclinical hypothyroidism besides DM and recurrent hepatitis. We suggested WRS for this patient, and it was confirmed by identification of a novel homozygous missense mutation (Q166R) in exon 3 of the EIF2AK3 gene. The aim of this report is to remind the possibility of WRS in isolated neonatal diabetes; while, the other clinical manifestations of this syndrome including its major symptom of recurrent hepatitis may appear later. © 2013, Kowsar Corp
Investigation on feeding of sardines and major tuna fishes in west of Oman Sea (Jask area)
Feeding habits of three dominant species of tuna fishes (Thunnus tonggol, Thunnus albacares, Euthynnus affinis) and dominant species of sardine (Sardinella sindensis) were investigated from December 2006 to November 2007 in the western waters of Oman Sea. Seasonally samples of three species of these tuna and monthly samples of sardine were collected. Feeding studies on 101 longtail tuna (T.tonggol) indicated that the bony fishes were main food of this species (98.3%) and followed by random foods included cephalopods (1.7%) and crustaceans (1.7%). Among the bony fishes, anchovy (66 %) and sardines (25.9 %) were most important than the other fishes. FI and CV for this species were calculated 26.4 and 21.8 respectively. Stomach content analysis of 85 specimens of E.affinis demonstrated that bony fishes were only food for this species (100%). Sardines (49.3%) and anchovy (11.9%) were foremost food items for E.affinis. Moreover FI and CV were calculated 64.7 and 15.3 correspondingly. The stomach of 120 yellowfin tuna (T.albacares) were analyze. Results showed that bony fishes,cephalopods and crustaceans were formed food items of this species .Yellowfin tuna were preferable fed on bony fishes (87.7%) specially sardines(41.2%),flying fish(13.9%)and M.cordyla(10.4%) and followed by cephalopoda (43.8%) specifically Loligo sp.(84.5%) and crustaceans(11.2%) . FI and CV were calculated 38.3 and 25.8.Study on 320 stomachs were determined that zooplankton and phytoplankton formed food of S.sindensis. Zooplankton (crustacean and molluscs) were main food (90%) and phytoplankton (Bacillariophyceae and Dynophyceae) were least food items (10%). Copepoda (crustaceans) with 58% were preferable food and bivalves and after that bivalves (molluscs) with 14%, Bacillariophyceae (8%) and Cyanophyceae (2%) CV and FI were 30.3 and 29.4 respectively
