Bora-induced currents corresponding to different synoptic conditions above the Adriatic
International audienceThe Bora wind field is characterised by strong vorticity and divergence. Several numerical experiments, in which an oceanographic model was forced with northeasterly winds having climatological alongshore variability, were performed in order to study the influence of spatial variability in the bora wind field on the surface currents in the northern Adriatic. Numerical model results showed that during bora episodes with lower speeds and fast offshore decay surface currents along transect Rovinj - Po River are predominantly in the downwind direction. On the other hand, during bora episodes with strong intensity and slow offshore decay, a cyclonic gyre due to the pronounced bora alongshore variability is formed in the northernmost part of the Adriatic Sea and the studied transect is influenced by the counter currents. Moreover, bora having a high speed and a short offshore range produces the same effect in the eastern part of the Rovinj - Po River transect as low-speed bora characterised by slow offshore decay. Eulerian current measurements performed in the northern Adriatic during bora episodes characterised by different synoptic conditions supported the numerical model findings. Surface currents during the bora episode of 8-11 February 1984 were directed downwind, whereas during the episode of 12-19 February 1984 they were directed upwind. The first episode was characterised by a deep bora layer with cyclonic activity over the western Mediterranean and Genoa Bay, whereas the second one was accompanied by temperature inversion and a southwesterly tropospheric wind above a shallow bora layer. According to the hydraulic theory developed by Smith (1985), an observed descent of isentropes during the second bora episode led to the stronger acceleration in the bora layer and its larger offshore extent. Different offshore bora decays during studied events were confirmed by a comparison of the wind data originating from the meteorological stations positioned on the opposite Adriatic coasts
Remarks on the Upper Bounds on the Higgs Boson Mass from Triviality
We study the effects of the one-loop matching conditions on Higgs boson and
top quark masses on the triviality bounds on the Higgs boson mass using
with corrected two-loop coefficients. We obtain quite higher
results than previous ones and observe that the triviality bounds are not
nearly influenced by varying top quark mass over the range measured at CDF and
D0. The effects of typo errors in and the one-loop
matching condition on the top quark mass are negligible. We estimate the size
of effects on the triviality bounds from the one-loop matching condition on the

Spectrum of complications and mortality of bacterial meningitis: an experience from a developing country
Objective:
The aim of this study was to obtain data on predisposing factors, causative organisms and their associated mortality and complications related to acute bacterial meningitis.
Methods:
The chart review of all patients in whom acute bacterial meningitis was diagnosed at The Aga Khan University Hospital from January 1995 through December 2001.
Results:
One hundred ninety-four patients were included in study. There were 146 males and 48 females. The mean age of our study population was 41±12.3 years. One hundred and ninety (97.9%) patients had community acquired meningitis; only 4 (2.0%) patients developed meningitis nosocomially. The two most common predisposing factors were diabetes mellitus (13.9%) and otitis media (7.7%) among all 194 patients. Conclusion:
Bacterial Meningitis remains a serious disease associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. Most cases are community acquired with S. Pneumoniae being the most common pathogen. Old age, diabetes mellitus, a positive culture, seizures as a complication and late stage in the disease are the important predictors of a poor outcome (JPMA 53:580;2003)
Limits on the Dipole Moments of the -Lepton via the Process $e^{+}e^{-}\to \tau^+ \tau^- \gamma in a Left-Right Symmetric Model
Limits on the anomalous magnetic moment and the electric dipole moment of the
lepton are calculated through the reaction at the -pole and in the framework of a left-right symmetric model.
The results are based on the recent data reported by the L3 Collaboration at
CERN LEP. Due to the stringent limit of the model mixing angle , the
effect of this angle on the dipole moments is quite small.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figure
Lattice Discretization in Quantum Scattering
The utility of lattice discretization technique is demonstrated for solving
nonrelativistic quantum scattering problems and specially for the treatment of
ultraviolet divergences in these problems with some potentials singular at the
origin in two and three space dimensions. This shows that lattice
discretization technique could be a useful tool for the numerical solution of
scattering problems in general. The approach is illustrated in the case of the

Image Registration and Predictive Modeling: Learning the Metric on the Space of Diffeomorphisms
We present a method for metric optimization in the Large Deformation Diffeomorphic Metric Mapping (LDDMM) framework, by treating the induced Riemannian metric on the space of diffeomorphisms as a kernel in a machine learning context. For simplicity, we choose the kernel Fischer Linear Discriminant Analysis (KLDA) as the framework. Optimizing the kernel parameters in an Expectation-Maximization framework, we define model fidelity via the hinge loss of the decision function. The resulting algorithm optimizes the parameters of the LDDMM norm-inducing differential operator as a solution to a group-wise registration and classification problem. In practice, this may lead to a biology-aware registration, focusing its attention on the predictive task at hand such as identifying the effects of disease. We first tested our algorithm on a synthetic dataset, showing that our parameter selection improves registration quality and classification accuracy. We then tested the algorithm on 3D subcortical shapes from the Schizophrenia cohort Schizconnect. Our Schizophrenia-Control predictive model showed significant improvement in ROC AUC compared to baseline parameters
Majorana neutrino transition magnetic moments in left-right symmetric models
Transition magnetic moments of Majorana neutrinos are discussed in the frame
of the most natural version of the LR model (with left- and right-handed
triplets and a bidoublet in the Higgs sector). We show that their largest
values could be at most from diagrams with in the
loop. This could happen for specific models where (i) neutrino-charged lepton
mixing is maximal and (ii) (VEVs for neutral Higgs
fields in the bidoublet are equal). Contributions from diagrams with
charged Higgses in the loop are smaller than those in the SM with right-handed

Matching conditions relate couplings to particle masses. We discuss the
importance of one-loop matching conditions in Higgs and top-quark sector as
well as the choice of the matching scale. We argue for matching scales

results, the two-loop Higgs mass upper bounds are reanalyzed. Previous results
for few TeV are found to be too stringent. For
