Laparoscopic management of caesarean scar ectopic pregnancy: a case report
A 30-year-old G5P2A2 woman was diagnosed to have ectopic pregnancy at the caesarean scar site on routine ultrasound scan followed by Doppler blood flow evaluation. It was managed successfully by laparoscopic resection. Ectopic pregnancy in a caesarean scar is a rare entity. It is important to diagnose the condition as early as possible in order to administer appropriate, timely treatment and to avoid complications. The optimal treatment of caesarean section scar ectopic pregnancies is unknown successfully by laparoscopic resection followed by endosuturing and this enabled uterine preservation
Effect of trichomes in cowpea on infestation by spotted pod borer, Maruca vitrata (Fab.) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae)
Trichomes are the morphological features present on the surface of plants, which provide resistance to several insect pests. A pot culture experiment with 48 cowpea accessions were conducted to evaluate the effect of trichomes in cowpea on infestation by spotted pod borer, Maruca vitrata. Significant variation in terms of damage to pods due to spotted pod borer was observed. The number of trichomes per unit area was significantly and negatively correlated (-0.441) with per cent damage. However, the length of trichomes on pods has no significant correlation with per cent damage
OXIDATIVE STRESS IN ACNE VULGARIS
Objective: Acne vulgaris is a common dermatological disease characterized by sebaceous hyperplasia, follicular hyperkeratinization, Immune reactions, and Inflammation. Our study aims to determine the role of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of acne vulgaris.
Methods: 35 acne patients and 35 healthy people were selected and their serum levels of superoxide dismutase SOD and Malondialdehyde MDA were estimated and the results are compared with the control group. Also, the relationship between the duration and severity of acne with the parameters is assessed.
Results: The activity of SOD is found to be decreased and the level of MDA is found to be increased in acne patients compared to healthy people, suggesting increased oxidative stress in Acne vulgaris patients.
Conclusion: Our study concludes that oxidative stress plays a role in the pathogenesis of Acne vulgaris and antioxidants can be used as a part of treatment.
Effect of configuration of calyx in cowpea flowers on infestation by spotted pod borer, Maruca vitrata (Fab.) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae)
Twenty cowpea accessions were evaluated for resistance to the spotted pod borer, Marucavitrata in the Department of Agricultural Entomology, College of Horticulture, KeralaAgricultural University, Thrissur. The calyxes of the flowers were examined and the accessionswere categorized into two groups, partially free (major portion of the sepals free, the basalportion tight) and semi tight (major portion of the sepals tight, only the tip free). Significantvariation was observed in terms of damage to cowpea flowers due to spotted pod borer. Thehighest extent of flower damage (50.39 %) was recorded in case of Bhagyalakshmy.Categorization of the different accessions on the basis of the configuration of calyx indicatedthat EC 100092, Palakkadanthandanpayar, TVX – 944, EC 300039, IC 20645 and IC 52110 hadsemi tight calyx characterized by tight sepals with tips alone being free. All these accessionshad consistently low levels of infestation ranging from zero to 3.16 per cent. The accessions C– 152, Kanakamony, PKM – 1, Anaswara, IC 20431, Sreya, Hridya, Mysore local, IC 52105,Kashikanchan, Vellayani Jyothika, Malika, Bhagyalakshmy and Lola had major portion ofsepals free with their basal portion tight. Hence, they were grouped as partially free. Freesepals would provide the first instar borer larvae some extent of concealment as well as enableit to bore into the flower more easily. Tight calyx, thus, could possibly have a deterrent effecton the first instar larvae entry
The role of low-frequency intraseasonal oscillations in the anomalous Indian summer monsoon rainfall of 2002
We analyze the dynamical features and responsible factors of the low-frequency intraseasonal time scales which influenced the nature of onset, intensity and duration of active/break phases and withdrawal of the monsoon during the anomalous Indian summer monsoon of 2002 - the most severe drought recorded in recent times. During that season, persistent warm sea surface temperature anomalies over the equatorial Indian Ocean played a significant role in modulating the strength of the monsoon Hadley circulation. This in turn affected the onset and intense break spells especially the long break during the peak monsoon month of July. Strong low-frequency intraseasonal modulations with significant impact on the onset and active/break phases occurred in 2002 which were manifested as a good association between low-frequency intraseasonal oscillations and the onset and active/break spells. Further, SST anomalies over the equatorial Indo-Pacific region on low-frequency intraseasonal time scales were found to affect the equatorial eastward and thereby off-equatorial northward propagations of enhanced convection over the Indian region. These propagations in turn modulated the active/break cycle deciding the consequent severity of the 2002 drought
Laparoscopic myomectomy - a three year experience
Background: Fibroids are the most common benign tumor of the uterus to affect women of reproductive age. Many women opt for laparoscopic myomectomy to conserve their uterus for fertility. This study aimed at evaluating the complications, need for blood transfusion and the average time taken for Laparoscopic myomectomy. Methods: We conducted a retrospective observational study of laparoscopic myomectomy cases in a tertiary care hospital for a period of 3 years from July 2013.Results: A total of 31 cases of laparoscopic myomectomy were evaluated. Average time taken was 161 +/- 31.2 minutes. Most common type of fibroid encountered was intramural, 16 (51.6%). The chief presenting symptom was abnormal uterine bleeding, 16 (51%). 3 (5.8%) of the patients had intraoperative/immediate post-surgery blood transfusion. Major vessel injury occurred in one case (3.2%). In 25 (80.64%) cases power morcellation was used, minilap incision and colpotomy for fibroid retrieval in 2 cases each. There was no single case of febrile morbidity. Average period of hospital stay was 2 days. Conclusions: Laparoscopic myomectomy is a viable option in women with symptomatic fibroids who want to retain their uterus. The procedure is safe in the hands of skilled surgeon
