Historians in the Community: Public History Practicum Projects, History 625 - The Art and Craft of Interpretation
Public historians work among and for the publicâthey put their skills as historians to work in our communities. Using historical materials, public historians help people understand personal and community histories and their relationships to broader historical contexts.
The Public History Track at UMass Boston serves and supports community endeavors to document, preserve, curate, interpret, and make accessible their various histories, and to connect their pasts with the present. Our partnerships provide graduate students with opportunities to apply theory to practice, and to build their professional networks and portfolios

Students as change partners in the School of Literature and Languages at the University of Reading
The pedagogic landscape in Higher Education (HE) has certainly witnessed change in recent years, and involving students as partners in aspects of degree programme development is part of that change (Lowe and Dunne, 2017). Darling-Hammond (2009) described how educational systems internationally are changing priorities to enable students to âcope with complexity, use new technologies, and work cooperatively to frame and solve novel problemsâ (p. 45). Zhao (2011) asserts that it is vital to engage students as partners in change, giving them an active hand in programme design, to enable students to develop into creative individuals who leave education with much more than just an academic qualification; it is an âauthentic way to develop professional skillsâ (Giles, Martin, Bryce & Hendry, 2004, p. 681) as well as an opportunity to develop a positive and autonomous approach to learning that will be long lasting and productive The case study which follows involved students working cooperatively with each other and with staff in a School of Literature and Languages. Together, we re-designed a new module aimed at developing studentsâ understanding of the demands of university level study and writing and supporting them in their transition from sixth form to Higher Education
The Synthesis of Regression Slopes in Meta-Analysis
Research on methods of meta-analysis (the synthesis of related study results)
has dealt with many simple study indices, but less attention has been paid to
the issue of summarizing regression slopes. In part this is because of the many
complications that arise when real sets of regression models are accumulated.
We outline the complexities involved in synthesizing slopes, describe existing
methods of analysis and present a multivariate generalized least squares
approach to the synthesis of regression slopes.Comment: Published in at http://dx.doi.org/10.1214/07-STS243 the Statistical

Bringing in the Harvest: Laborers in Massachusetts Agriculture
Join our panelists as they explore the recent history of laborers in the fields and on the ocean. Although seemingly different, the farm and fishery share an extraordinary diversity of their labor force. Learn how âworld farmers,â recent immigrants, and long-time agricultural workers create a distinctive Massachusetts experience that can be explored through history programs and activities.
