Extended Reaction Rate Integral as Solutions of Some General Differential Equations
Here an extended form of the reaction rate probability integral, in the case
of nonresonant thermonuclear reactions with the depleted tail and the right
tail cut off, is considered. The reaction rate integral then can be looked upon
as the inverse of the convolution of the Mellin transforms of Tsallis type
statistics of nonextensive statistical mechanics and stretched exponential as
well as that of superstatistics and stretched exponentials. The differential
equations satisfied by the extended probability integrals are derived. The idea
used is a novel one of evaluating the extended integrals in terms of some
special functions and then by invoking the differential equations satisfied by
these special functions. Some special cases of limiting situations are also

GLEAM v3 : satellite-based land evaporation and root-zone soil moisture
The Global Land Evaporation Amsterdam Model (GLEAM) is a set of algorithms dedicated to the estimation of terrestrial evaporation and root-zone soil moisture from satellite data. Ever since its development in 2011, the model has been regularly revised, aiming at the optimal incorporation of new satellite-observed geophysical variables, and improving the representation of physical processes. In this study, the next version of this model (v3) is presented. Key changes relative to the previous version include (1) a revised formulation of the evaporative stress, (2) an optimized drainage algorithm, and (3) a new soil moisture data assimilation system. GLEAM v3 is used to produce three new data sets of terrestrial evaporation and root-zone soil moisture, including a 36-year data set spanning 1980-2015, referred to as v3a (based on satellite-observed soil moisture, vegetation optical depth and snow-water equivalent, reanalysis air temperature and radiation, and a multi-source precipitation product), and two satellite-based data sets. The latter share most of their forcing, except for the vegetation optical depth and soil moisture, which are based on observations from different passive and active C-and L-band microwave sensors (European Space Agency Climate Change Initiative, ESA CCI) for the v3b data set (spanning 2003-2015) and observations from the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) satellite in the v3c data set (spanning 2011-2015). Here, these three data sets are described in detail, compared against analogous data sets generated using the previous version of GLEAM (v2), and validated against measurements from 91 eddy-covariance towers and 2325 soil moisture sensors across a broad range of ecosystems. Results indicate that the quality of the v3 soil moisture is consistently better than the one from v2: average correlations against in situ surface soil moisture measurements increase from 0.61 to 0.64 in the case of the v3a data set and the representation of soil moisture in the second layer improves as well, with correlations increasing from 0.47 to 0.53. Similar improvements are observed for the v3b and c data sets. Despite regional differences, the quality of the evaporation fluxes remains overall similar to the one obtained using the previous version of GLEAM, with average correlations against eddy-covariance measurements ranging between 0.78 and 0.81 for the different data sets. These global data sets of terrestrial evaporation and root-zone soil moisture are now openly available at www.GLEAM.eu and may be used for large-scale hydrological applications, climate studies, or research on land-atmosphere feedbacks
DNA methylation-based profiling of bone and soft tissue tumours: a validation study of the 'DKFZ Sarcoma Classifier'
Diagnosing bone and soft tissue neoplasms remains challenging because of the large number of subtypes, many of which lack diagnostic biomarkers. DNA methylation profiles have proven to be a reliable basis for the classification of brain tumours and, following this success, a DNA methylation-based sarcoma classification tool from the Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum (DKFZ) in Heidelberg has been developed. In this study, we assessed the performance of their classifier on DNA methylation profiles of an independent data set of 986 bone and soft tissue tumours and controls. We found that the 'DKFZ Sarcoma Classifier' was able to produce a diagnostic prediction for 55% of the 986 samples, with 83% of these predictions concordant with the histological diagnosis. On limiting the validation to the 820 cases with histological diagnoses for which the DKFZ Classifier was trained, 61% of cases received a prediction, and the histological diagnosis was concordant with the predicted methylation class in 88% of these cases, findings comparable to those reported in the DKFZ Classifier paper. The classifier performed best when diagnosing mesenchymal chondrosarcomas (CHSs, 88% sensitivity), chordomas (85% sensitivity), and fibrous dysplasia (83% sensitivity). Amongst the subtypes least often classified correctly were clear cell CHSs (14% sensitivity), malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumours (27% sensitivity), and pleomorphic liposarcomas (29% sensitivity). The classifier predictions resulted in revision of the histological diagnosis in six of our cases. We observed that, although a higher tumour purity resulted in a greater likelihood of a prediction being made, it did not correlate with classifier accuracy. Our results show that the DKFZ Classifier represents a powerful research tool for exploring the pathogenesis of sarcoma; with refinement, it has the potential to be a valuable diagnostic tool
A Learning Management System-Based Early Warning System for Academic Advising in Undergraduate Engineering
This chapter describes a design-based research project that developed an early warning system for an undergraduate engineering mentoring program. Using near real-time data from a university’s learning management system, we provided academic advisors with timely and targeted data on students’ academic progress. We discuss the development of the early warning system and detail how academic advisors used it. Incubation of ovine scrapie with environmental matrix results in biological and biochemical changes of PrPSc over time
Ovine scrapie can be transmitted via environmental reservoirs. A pool of ovine scrapie isolates were incubated on soil for one day or thirteen months and eluted prion was used to challenge tg338 mice transgenic for ovine PrP. After one-day incubation on soil, two PrPSc phenotypes were present: G338 or Apl338ii. Thirteen months later some divergent PrPSc phenotypes were seen: a mixture of Apl338ii with either G338 or P338, and a completely novel PrPSc deposition, designated Cag338. The data show that prolonged ageing of scrapie prions within an environmental matrix may result in changes in the dominant PrPSc biological/biochemical properties
Decision-Making and Depressive Symptomatology
Difficulty making decisions is a core symptom of depressive illness, but the nature of these difficulties has not been well characterized. The two studies presented herein use the same hypothetical scenarios that call for a decision. In Study 1, participants were asked to make and explain their decisions in a free-response format, as well as to describe their prior experiences with similar situations. The results suggest that those with more depressive symptoms make decisions that are less likely to further their interests. We also identified several interesting associations between features of decision-making and the presence of depressive symptoms. In Study 2, participants were guided through their decisions with simple decision tools to investigate whether the association between depressive symptoms and poor decisions is better accounted for by failure to use of good decision-making strategies, or by other factors, such as differences in priorities or goals. With this minimal intervention the quality of decisions no longer declined significantly as a function of depressive symptom severity. Moreover, few associations between depressive symptom severity and decision-related goals and priorities were evident, suggesting that the previously-exposed difficulties of depressed individuals with decision-making were largely the result of their failure to use effective decision-making techniques
Minding impacting events in a model of stochastic variance
We introduce a generalisation of the well-known ARCH process, widely used for
generating uncorrelated stochastic time series with long-term non-Gaussian
distributions and long-lasting correlations in the (instantaneous) standard
deviation exhibiting a clustering profile. Specifically, inspired by the fact
that in a variety of systems impacting events are hardly forgot, we split the
process into two different regimes: a first one for regular periods where the
average volatility of the fluctuations within a certain period of time is below
a certain threshold and another one when the local standard deviation
outnumbers it. In the former situation we use standard rules for
heteroscedastic processes whereas in the latter case the system starts
recalling past values that surpassed the threshold. Our results show that for
appropriate parameter values the model is able to provide fat tailed
probability density functions and strong persistence of the instantaneous
variance characterised by large values of the Hurst exponent is greater than

Coupled-Channel Effects in Collisions between Heavy Ions near the Coulomb Barrier
With the recent availability of state-of-the-art heavy-ion stable and
radioactive beams, there has been a renew interest in the investigation of
nuclear reactions with heavy ions. I first present the role of inelastic and
transfer channel couplings in fusion reactions induced by stable heavy ions.
Analysis of experimental fusion cross sections by using standard
coupled-channel calculations is discussed. The role of multi-neutron transfer
is investigated in the fusion process below the Coulomb barrier by analyzing
S+Zr as benchmark reactions. The enhancement of fusion cross
sections for S+Zr is well reproduced at sub-barrier energies by
NTFus code calculations including the coupling of the neutron-transfer channels
following the Zagrebaev semi-classical model. Similar effects for
Ca+Zr and Ca+Zr fusion excitation functions are
found. The breakup coupling in both the elastic scattering and in the fusion
process induced by weakly bound stable projectiles is also shown to be crucial.
In this lecture, full coupled-channel calculations of the fusion excitation
functions are performed by using the breakup coupling for the more neutron-rich
reaction and for the more weakly bound projectiles. I clearly demonstrate that
Continuum-Discretized Coupled-Channel calculations are capable to reproduce the
fusion enhancement from the breakup coupling in Li+Co.Comment: 14 pages. 6 figure
