    Optimal Stabilization of Periodic Orbits

    In this contribution the optimal stabilization problem of periodic orbits is studied in a symplectic geometry setting. For this, the stable manifold theory for the point stabilization case is generalized to the case of periodic orbit stabilization. Sufficient conditions for the existence of a \gls{nhim} of the Hamiltonian system are derived. It is shown that the optimal control problem has a solution if the related periodic Riccati equation has a unique periodic solution. For the analysis of the stable and unstable manifold a coordinate transformation is used which is moving along the orbit. As an example, an optimal control problem is considered for a spring mass oscillator system, which should be stabilized at a certain energy level.Comment: Submitted for IFAC World Congress 202

    Differential Emotions and the Stock Market - The Case of Company-Specific Trading

    Practitioners and researchers alike increasingly use social media messages as an additional source of information to analyse stock price movements. In this regard, previous preliminary findings demonstrate the incremental value of considering the multi-dimensional structure of human emotions in sentiment analysis instead of the predominant assessment of the binary positive-negative valence of emotions. Therefore, based on emotion theory and an established sentiment lexicon, we develop and apply an open source dictionary for the analysis of seven different emotions (affection, happiness, satisfaction, fear, anger, depression, and contempt).To investigate the connection between the differential emotions and stock movements we analyse approximately 5.5 million Twitter messages on 33 S&P 100 companies and their respective NYSE stock prices from Yahoo!Finance over a period of three months. Subsequently, we conduct a lagged fixed-effects panel regression on the daily closing value differences. The results generally support the assumption of the necessity of considering a more differentiated sentiment. Moreover, comparing positive and negative valence, we find that only the average negative emotionality strength has a significant connection with company-specific stock price movements. The emotion specific analysis reveals that an increase in depression and happiness strength isassociated with a significant decrease in company-specific stock prices

    Room-temperature transverse-electric polarized intersubband electroluminescence from InAs/AlInAs quantum dashes

    We report the observation of transverse electric polarized electroluminescence from InAs/AlInAs quantum dash quantum cascade structures up to room temperature. The emission is attributed to the electric field confined along the shortest lateral dimension of the dashes, as confirmed by its dependence on crystallographic orientation both in absorption measurements on a dedicated sample and from electroluminescence itself. From the absorption we estimate a dipole moment for the observed transition of =1.7 nm. The electroluminescence is peaked at around 110 meV and increases with applied bias. Its temperature dependence shows a decrease at higher temperatures limited by optical phonon emission.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Applied Physics Letter

    Remote Monitoring and Teleoperation of Autonomous Vehicles - Is Virtual Reality an Option?

    While the promise of autonomous vehicles has led to significant scientific and industrial progress, fully automated, SAE level 5 conform cars will likely not see mass adoption anytime soon. Instead, in many applications, human supervision, such as remote monitoring and teleoperation, will be required for the foreseeable future. While Virtual Reality (VR) has been proposed as one potential interface for teleoperation, its benefits and drawbacks over physical monitoring and teleoperation solutions have not been thoroughly investigated. To this end, we contribute three user studies, comparing and quantifying the performance of and subjective feedback for a VR-based system with an existing monitoring and teleoperation system, which is in industrial use today. Through these three user studies, we contribute to a better understanding of future virtual monitoring and teleoperation solutions for autonomous vehicles. The results of our first user study (n=16) indicate that a VR interface replicating the physical interface does not outperform the physical interface. It also quantifies the negative effects that combined monitoring and teleoperating tasks have on users irrespective of the interface being used. The results of the second user study (n=24) indicate that the perceptual and ergonomic issues caused by VR outweigh its benefits, like better concentration through isolation. The third follow-up user study (n=24) specifically targeted the perceptual and ergonomic issues of VR; the subjective feedback of this study indicates that newer-generation VR headsets have the potential to catch up with the current physical displays

    Exploranative Code Quality Documents

    Good code quality is a prerequisite for efficiently developing maintainable software. In this paper, we present a novel approach to generate exploranative (explanatory and exploratory) data-driven documents that report code quality in an interactive, exploratory environment. We employ a template-based natural language generation method to create textual explanations about the code quality, dependent on data from software metrics. The interactive document is enriched by different kinds of visualization, including parallel coordinates plots and scatterplots for data exploration and graphics embedded into text. We devise an interaction model that allows users to explore code quality with consistent linking between text and visualizations; through integrated explanatory text, users are taught background knowledge about code quality aspects. Our approach to interactive documents was developed in a design study process that included software engineering and visual analytics experts. Although the solution is specific to the software engineering scenario, we discuss how the concept could generalize to multivariate data and report lessons learned in a broader scope.Comment: IEEE VIS VAST 201
