Effect of abiotic factors on the stability of chosen oligopeptides isolated from the freshwater cyanobacterium Woronichinia naegeliana
Cyanobacterial blooms have a significant impact on water quality. Implementing appropriate treatment methods to remove cyanobacterial secondary metabolites requires assessing their stability. In contrast to cyanotoxins, the effect of abiotic factors on cyanopeptides has been poorly studied. The present study analysed the impact of pH, temperature, visible and ultraviolet (UV) radiation on the stability of chosen oligopeptides found in a freshwater cyanobacterium Woronichinia naegeliana bloom that frequently appears in drinking water reservoirs worldwide. The tested cyanopeptolin 1081 (CYA-1081) and anabaenopeptin 899 (ANB-899) were relatively stable at room temperature for 12 weeks regardless of pH. However, boiling (100 ) for one hour affected the partial decomposition of the compounds in a pH-dependent manner; the highest decrease in the initial content of CYA-1081 to 47.0% was recorded at pH 9, while for ANB-899 to 42.4% at pH 3. The tested cyanopeptolin was resistant to visible radiation, but UV radiation in an acidic condition caused its degradation by 32.3%. Treatment of ANB-899 with visible or UV radiation for 3 h caused its partial decomposition with a maximum reduction of 40.4 and 70.8%, respectively, at acidic pH. The presented data provided information on factors affecting the cyanopeptides persistence and may be useful in the search for and development of effective methods of removing cyanobacterial metabolites
Materiał i metody: Dokonano przeglądu dokumentacji pacjentów. Przeanalizowano dokumentację 124 pacjentów w wieku od 37 do
91 lat wypisanych z Oddziału Rehabilitacji Neurologicznej w okresie od 01.01.2012 do 31.07.2013. Obecność otępienia i depresji
stwierdzano na podstawie klinicznej diagnozy postawionej przez psychologów posiłkujących się testami: Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) i Krótkim Testem Stanu Psychicznego (KTSP) oraz skalą Hamiltona i skalą Becka.
Wyniki: Otępienie stwierdzano u 46% pacjentów po udarze mózgu usprawnianych w Oddziale Rehabilitacji Neurologicznej Ośrodka
Rehabilitacji Narządu Ruchu „Krzeszowice”, a depresję u blisko 39%. U osób w wieku powyżej 65 lat stwierdzono większą szansę wystąpienia otępienia w porównaniu do osób młodszych (OR=5,91; 95%CI: 2,52-13,89). Występowanie afazji było związane z pięciokrotnie większą szansą wystąpienia otępienia (OR=5,74; 95%CI: 1,93-17,11).
Introduction: In addition to physical impairment, post-stroke patients also display emotional and cognitive disorders, e.g., depression
and dementia, which may result from a stroke or occur independently of it. Because these disorders affect treatment outcome, the
risk of a subsequent stroke, and mortality, they should be taken into account during rehabilitation.
Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of depression and dementia among post-stroke patients and to assess the correlation between these disorders and sociodemographic and clinical characteristics.
Material and methods: Retrospective analysis of medical documentation of 124 post‑stroke patients hospitalised in a neurological rehabilitation ward from 1 January 2012 to 31 July 2013 was conducted. Depression and dementia were diagnosed by psychologists using
the Mini-Mental State Examination, Short Test of Mental State, Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression, and Beck Depression Inventory.
Results: a total of 46% of post-stroke patients rehabilitated in the Krzeszowice Rehabilitation Centre were diagnosed with dementia,
and 39% were diagnosed with depression. Persons aged over 65 years had a higher chance of dementia compared to younger persons
(OR=5.91, 95%CI: 2.52–13.89). Aphasia correlated with a five times higher chance of dementia (OR=5.74, 95%CI: 1.93–17.11).
Sex, education, and other analysed clinical and sociodemographic characteristics did not correlate with dementia. No correlation was
found between depression and dementia, age, sex, education, number of inhabitants, the type, location and number of strokes, time
since stroke, hypertension, diabetes, or aphasia.
Conclusions: Dementia and depression were diagnosed in a group of post-stroke patients. Dementia was more prevalent among persons aged over 65 years and persons with aphasia. Because depression and dementia increase the risk of a subsequent stroke and mortality in post-stroke patients, both disorders should be diagnosed and treated early to prevent their effects
i stanem zdrowia.
Materiał i metody: Przeprowadzono analizę retrospektywną dokumentacji medycznej wszystkich pacjentów rehabilitowanych
w Oddziale Rehabilitacji Neurologicznej w roku 2012. Badanie objęło 97 pacjentów.
Wyniki: Przeprowadzone badanie wskazuje na zależność pomiędzy infekcją układu moczowego a wiekiem (OR=3,77; 95%CI: 1,589,00),
płcią (OR=4,82; 95%CI: 1,85-12,57), czasem, jaki upłynął od udaru (OR=3,75; 95%CI: 1,43-9,86) oraz cukrzycą (OR=3,07;
95%CI: 1,15-8,17). U wszystkich pacjentów, którzy mieli założony na stałe cewnik rozwinęła się infekcja układu moczowego. Nie
stwierdzono istotnej zależności pomiędzy typem, lokalizacją i liczbą przebytych udarów oraz występowaniem nadciśnienia tętniczego
i afazją a zakażeniem układu moczowego.Introduction: The incidence, etiopathogenesis, health consequences and costs of treatment indicate that strokes are a very important
problem in public health nowadays. Although some progress in the treatment of strokes has been made, the importance of the problem is still increasing. Apart from neurological deficits, as well as cognitive and intellectual impairment, urinary tract infection is one
of the most common stroke-related complications to be diagnosed and treated in rehabilitation wards.
Aim: The study of the frequency of urinary tract infections and the relationship between urinary tract infection and socio-demographic
characteristics and health.
Material and methods: The study covered the medical documentation of all patients hospitalized in the ward after a stroke from
01.01.2012 until 31.12.2012. This constituting a retrospective analysis of the medical documentation of 97 patients.
Results: We demonstrated an association between urinary tract infections and age (OR=3.77; 95%CI: 1.58-9.00), sex (OR=4.82;
95%CI: 1.85-12.57), length of time after a stroke (OR=3.75; 95%CI: 1.43-9.86), and diabetes (OR=3.07; 95%CI: 1.15-8.17). Urinary
tract infection occurred in all of the patients with permanent urinary catheterization. There was no relationship between urinary tract
infection and the type, location and number of strokes. Hypertension and aphasia also were not related to urinary tract infection.
Conclusions: 1. The permanent insertion of a catheter in post-stroke patients in all cases results in urinary tract infection. It follows
therefore to relieve the patient as quickly as possible of the catheter. It does not follow to routinely cetheterize patients with urinary
incontinence. 2. The factors resulting in a predisposition for infection of the urinary tract are: advanced age, being female as well as
a short time lapse following the stroke. These individuals require especial care on the part of medical personnel
