    Non-Market Valuation of Open Space and Other Amenities Associated with Retention of Lands in Agricultural Use

    The most productive farmland in southcentral Alaska is currently under intense development pressure due to rapid population increases and consequential increases in demand for suburban housing. This study utilizes a contingent valuation iterative bidding game to estimate the willingness of Matanuska-Susitna Borough residents to pay to preserve open space and other historical/environmental amenities associated with farming activities. Determinants of consumer behavior are addressed as well as total benefits and costs of various posited development scenarios. This information may be useful to policymakers assessing actions designed to purchase development rights from Matanuska-Susitna farmers

Our thesis is that research in our field could benefit from being evaluated on how it contributes to theory (including the development of one’s own). We believe that this recommendation represents a significant and constructive step forward. Our reflections on a number of the issues raised by those who wrote reactions to our article are below

    PROTEIN STRUCTURE REPORT Solution structure of the E3 ligase HOIL-1 Ubl domain

    Abstract: The E3 ligases HOIL-1 and parkin are each comprised of an N-terminal ubiquitin-like (Ubl) domain followed by a zinc-binding region and C-terminal RING-In-between-RING-RING domains. These two proteins, involved in the ubiquitin-mediated degradation pathway, are the only two known E3 ligases to share this type of multidomain architecture. Further, the Ubl domain of both HOIL-1 and parkin has been shown to interact with the S5a subunit of the 26S proteasome. The solution structure of the HOIL-1 Ubl domain was solved using NMR spectroscopy to compare it with that of parkin to determine the structural elements responsible for S5a intermolecular interactions. The final ensemble of 20 structures had a b-grasp Ubl-fold with an overall backbone RMSD of 0.59 6 0.10 Ă… in the structured regions between I55 and L131. HOIL-1 had a unique extension of both b1 and b2 sheets compared to parkin and other Ubl domains, a result of a four-residue insertion in this region. A similar 15-residue hydrophobic core in the HOIL-1 Ubl domain resulted in a comparable stability to the parkin Ubl, but significantly lower than that observed for ubiquitin. A comparison with parkin and other Ubl domains indicates that HOIL-1 likely uses a conserved hydrophobic patch (W58, V102, Y127, Y129) found on the b1 face, the b3-b4 loop and b5, as well as a C-terminal basic residue (R134) to recruit the S5a subunit as part of the ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis pathway

    A six-state USDA-IFAFS funded research project (Aerial Pollutant Emissions from Confined Animal Buildings, APECAB) was conducted with the purpose of determining hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, PM10, and odor emission rates from selected swine and poultry housing systems. An important aspect of emission studies is to be able to measure the mass flow rate of air through the housing system. For this research project, the decision was made to study only fan ventilated buildings due to the difficulty in estimating mass flow rates through naturally ventilated buildings. This paper highlights the various techniques used throughout the study to determine mass flow rate through fan ventilated swine and poultry housing systems

    Electronic Health Record Functionality Needed to Better Support Primary Care

    Electronic health records (EHRs) must support primary care clinicians and patients, yet many clinicians remain dissatisfied with their system. This manuscript presents a consensus statement about gaps in current EHR functionality and needed enhancements to support primary care. The Institute of Medicine primary care attributes were used to define needs and Meaningful Use (MU) objectives to define EHR functionality. Current objectives remain disease- rather than whole-person focused, ignoring factors like personal risks, behaviors, family structure, and occupational and environmental influences. Primary care needs EHRs to move beyond documentation to interpreting and tracking information over time as well as patient partnering activities, support for team based care, population management tools that deliver care, and reduced documentation burden. While Stage 3 MU’s focus on outcomes is laudable, enhanced functionality is still needed including EHR modifications, expanded use of patient portals, seamless integration with external applications, and advancement of national infrastructure and policies

    Design and implementation of the NUV/optical widefield Star Formation Camera for the Theia Observatory

    The Star Formation Camera (SFC) is a wide-field (~19'×~15', >280 arcmin^2), high-resolution (18 mas pixels) UV/optical dichroic camera designed for the Theia 4-m space-borne space telescope concept. SFC will deliver diffraction-limited images at λ > 300 nm in both a blue (190-517nm) and a red (517-1075nm) channel simultaneously. The goal is to conduct a comprehensive and systematic study of the astrophysical processes and environments relevant for the births and life cycles of stars and their planetary systems, and to investigate the range of environments, feedback mechanisms, and other factors that most affect the outcome of star and planet formation
