Enhancing Preoperative Planning in Orthopedic Trauma Surgery Using a Presentation Software.
Preoperative planning (PP) is critical to ensure a successful outcome in orthopaedic trauma surgery. Since it was first described thirty years ago, no modifications have been made to the original preoperative planning (OPP) technique, which was written by hand using pen and paper. We believe that the use of presentation software (such as Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Corp., Redmond, WA, US) can ease, improve and update the OPP and complement three-dimensional PP. The objective of the present paper is to describe our method for PP using a presentation software (PS)
Taphonomic analysis of an assemblage of Lama guanicoe (Artiodactyla, Camelidae) from late Holocene (Pampean Region, Argentina)
The present work analyzes the taphonomic characteristics of an assemblage of Lama guanicoe recovered from the fluvial deposits of Chacra La Blanqueada Formation, at GarcÃa del RÃo locality. This locality is situated in the middle valley of the Napostá Grande Creek (south of the Pampean Region, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina). A radiocarbon date of 2342 ± 47 years BP allows the assignment of this assemblage to the late Holocene. The MNI (Minimum Number of Individuals) and the population structure suggest the presence of a family group or part of a mixed group. The available evidence indicates that, throughout their taphonomic history, the remains were affected by processes related to a floodplain sub-environment. Also, the marks of anthropic activity suggest that the death of the animals was circumstantially used as a low-cost and low-risk resource, highlighting the relevant role of this species in the regional hunter-gatherer communities.Fil: Tomassini, Rodrigo Leandro. Mammary-type myofibroblastoma of the larynx: A rare tumor of the head and neck
Background: Mammary type-myofibroblastoma is a rare, benign tumor that is morphologically identical to myofibroblastoma of the breast. We describe, for the first time, a case of mammary-type myofibroblastoma arising in the larynx. Methods and results: A 70 year-old man presented with dysphagia and dysphonia and was found to have a right vocal cord cystic-appearing lesion, which was surgically excised. Histologic examination showed short fascicles of spindle cells with eosinophilic cytoplasm, oval nuclei with fine chromatin and inconspicuous nucleoli, thick bundles of collagen, and peripherally located focal scattered adipocytes. Immunohistochemical staining was positive for CD34 and negative for MDM2, CDK4, ER, and PR. Conclusion: We report the first rare case of a patient with a mammary-type myofibroblastoma of the larynx. While rare, it is important to consider this in the differential diagnosis when a spindle-cell tumor arises in the head and neck and to review the histopathological findings. Presentation and Outcomes of Otolaryngologic Surgeries in Patients With Mental Illness History
BACKGROUND: Describe the epidemiology and characteristics of patients with a history of mental illness undergoing otolaryngologic procedures.
METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional analysis utilizing the Nationwide Readmissions Database, 2010 to 2015. The study sample included adult (≥18 years) patients undergoing otolaryngologic procedures.
RESULTS: A total of 146 182 patients were included, 18.3% with mental illness history. The prevalence of patients who required otolaryngologic surgeries with history of mental illness increased significantly from 14.9% in 2010 to 25.0% in 2015 (P \u3c .001). Mental illness diagnoses included: depression (6.9%), anxiety (5.8%), alcohol dependence (4.2%), substance dependence (2.9%), bipolar disorder (1.4%), memory disorders (1.2%), delusional disorders (0.6%), self-harm (0.1%). Patients with a history of mental illness were more likely to be \u3c65 years, female, and have multiple comorbidities (P \u3c .05 each). Patients with history of mental illness had a higher risk of complications [OR:1.59, 95% CI:1.50,1.69, P \u3c .001].
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with a history of mental illness are increasingly encountered in otolaryngology service. This study provides an epidemiological perspective that warrants increasing clinical investigation of this subpopulation
Concept design of a new portable medical device for lymphedema monitoring: A EIT Health ClinMed Summer School project
Lymphedema is a chronic and progressive condition derived from impaired lymphatic system function. Lymphedema is incurable, progressive, disfiguring, disabling and has adverse psychosocial effects. Upper extremity lymphedema is mainly the consequence of breast cancer surgery. Several methods to diagnose lymphedema exist; however, these diagnoses are performed once the disease is already close to an advanced, irreversible stage. There is a need to monitor patients at risk with an efficient device. To solve this unmet need, we propose a portable home-monitoring device for early diagnosis of lymphedema. This paper explores all the aspects of the development of a new medical device, such as the assessment of the clinical need and the state of the art, the specifications for the solution, the definition of the broad outlines of the development plan and some considerations about the usability, the risk analysis, the market and the competitors. The authors would like to thank all the

GEM Colombia 2014
Alemania, Italia, Japón, Reino Unido y Estados Unidos).
instituciones patrocinadoras
