North-central Nigerian women’s experiences of obstetric fistula risk factors and their perceived treatment services: An interpretive description
Background An obstetric fistula also known as vesico vaginal fistula (VVF), or recto-vaginal fistula (RVF) is an abnormal opening between the urogenital tract and intestinal tract caused by prolonged obstructed labour; when the head of the baby presses on the soft tissues in the pelvis leading to loss of blood flow to the women’s bladder, vagina, and rectum. This can cause necrosis of the soft tissues resulting in debilitating fistula formations.
Aim This study aimed to uncover North-central Nigerian women’s experiences of obstetric fistula and their perceived treatment services.
Design Qualitative, interpretive descriptive methodology underpinned by symbolic interactionism involving face-to-face semi-structured interviews was used to explore North-central Nigerian women’s experiences of obstetric fistula and their perceived treatment services.
Sample A purposive sample of 15 women who had experienced obstetric fistula at a repair Centre in North-central Nigeria were eligible.
Results Four themes emerged from North-central Nigerian women’s experiences of obstetric fistula and their perceived treatment services i) I was left alone in the room ii) Waiting for the one vehicle in the village iii) I never knew about labour until that very day iv) and We kept following the native doctors and sorcerers.
Conclusion The findings from this study highlighted the depth of women’s experiences from the devastating complication of childbirth injury in North-central Nigeria. Analysis of insights from women’s voices directly affected by obstetric fistula demonstrated that in their views and experiences the themes identified were majorly responsible for their fistula status. Thus women need to raise their collective voices to resist oppressive harmful traditions and demand empowerment opportunities that will improve their social status. Government should improve primary healthcare facilities, train more midwives and subsidise maternal care for antenatal education and birth services spending for childbirth women may result in improved childbirth experiences for women in rural and urban communities.

Detection methods for non-Gaussian gravitational wave stochastic backgrounds
We address the issue of finding an optimal detection method for a
discontinuous or intermittent gravitational wave stochastic background. Such a
signal might sound something like popcorn popping. We derive an appropriate
version of the maximum likelihood detection statistic, and compare its
performance to that of the standard cross-correlation statistic both
analytically and with Monte Carlo simulations. The maximum likelihood statistic
performs better than the cross-correlation statistic when the background is
sufficiently non-Gaussian. For both ground and space based detectors, this
results in a gain factor, ranging roughly from 1 to 3, in the minimum
gravitational-wave energy density necessary for detection, depending on the
duty cycle of the background. Our analysis is exploratory, as we assume that
the time structure of the events cannot be resolved, and we assume white,
Gaussian noise in two collocated, aligned detectors. Before this detection
method can be used in practice with real detector data, further work is
required to generalize our analysis to accommodate separated, misaligned

An Introduction to Data Analysis in Asteroseismology
A practical guide is presented to some of the main data analysis concepts and
techniques employed contemporarily in the asteroseismic study of stars
exhibiting solar-like oscillations. The subjects of digital signal processing
and spectral analysis are introduced first. These concern the acquisition of
continuous physical signals to be subsequently digitally analyzed. A number of
specific concepts and techniques relevant to asteroseismology are then
presented as we follow the typical workflow of the data analysis process,
namely, the extraction of global asteroseismic parameters and individual mode

Pretreatment with corticosteroids attenuates the efficacy of colchicine in preventing recurrent pericarditis: A multi-centre all-case analysis
Aims Effective prevention of recurrent pericarditis remains an important yet elusive goal. Corticosteroid therapy often needs to be continued for a prolonged period and causes severe side effects. We performed a multi-centre all-case analysis to investigate the efficacy of colchicine in preventing subsequent relapses of pericarditis, and addressed the hypothesis that pretreatment with corticosteroids may attenuate the beneficial effect of colchicine.
Methods and results One hundred and forty published and unpublished cases of patients treated with colchicine after at least two relapses of pericarditis were aggregated from European centres. Of those 119 were included in the study group. Only 18% of the patients had relapses under colchicine therapy, and 30% after its discontinuation. There were significantly more relapses among mate patients after colchicine treatment (36 vs. 17%, P = 0.046), and those with previous corticosteroid treatment (43 vs. 13%, P = 0.02). Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified previous corticosteroid therapy (OR 6.68, 95% Cl: 1.65-27.02) and mate gender (OR 4.20, 95% Cl: 1.16-15.21) as independent risk factors for recurrence following colchicine therapy.
Conclusion Treatment with colchicine is highly effective in preventing recurrent pericarditis, white pretreatment with corticosteroids exacerbates and extends the course of recurrent pericarditis
A search for two body muon decay signals
Lepton family number violation is tested by searching for
decays among the 5.8 positive muon decay events analyzed by the
TWIST collaboration. Limits are set on the production of both massless and
massive bosons. The large angular acceptance of this experiment allows
limits to be placed on anisotropic decays, which can arise
from interactions violating both lepton flavor and parity conservation.
Branching ratio limits of order are obtained for bosons with masses
of 13 - 80 MeV/c and with different decay asymmetries. For bosons with
masses less than 13 MeV/c the asymmetry dependence is much stronger and
the 90% limit on the branching ratio varies up to . This is
the first study that explicitly evaluates the limits for anisotropic two body

Measurement of the Muon Decay Parameter delta
The muon decay parameter delta has been measured by the TWIST collaboration.
We find delta = 0.74964 +- 0.00066(stat.) +- 0.00112(syst.), consistent with
the Standard Model value of 3/4. This result implies that the product Pmuxi of
the muon polarization in pion decay, Pmu, and the muon decay parameter xi falls
within the 90% confidence interval 0.9960 < Pmuxi < xi < 1.0040. It also has
implications for left-right-symmetric and other extensions of the Standard

Evidence accumulation models with R: A practical guide to hierarchical Bayesian methods
Evidence accumulation models are a useful tool to allow researchers to investigate the latent cognitive variables that underlie response time and response accuracy. However, applying evidence accumulation models can be difficult because they lack easily computable forms. Numerical methods are required to determine the parameters of evidence accumulation that best correspond to the fitted data. When applied to complex cognitive models, such numerical methods can require substantial computational power which can lead to infeasibly long compute times. In this paper, we provide efficient, practical software and a step-by-step guide to fit evidence accumulation models with Bayesian methods. The software, written in C++, is provided in an R package: 'ggdmc'. The software incorporates three important ingredients of Bayesian computation, (1) the likelihood functions of two common response time models, (2) the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm (3) a population-based MCMC sampling method. The software has gone through stringent checks to be hosted on the Comprehensive R Archive Network (CRAN) and is free to download.
