Dual-path state reconstruction scheme for propagating quantum microwaves and detector noise tomography
Quantum state reconstruction involves measurement devices that are usually
described by idealized models, but not known in full detail in experiments. For
weak propagating microwaves, the detection process requires linear amplifiers
which obscure the signal with random noise. Here, we introduce a theory which
nevertheless allows one to use these devices for measuring all quadrature
moments of propagating quantum microwaves based on cross-correlations from a
dual-path amplification setup. Simultaneously, the detector noise properties
are determined, allowing for tomography. We demonstrate the feasibility of our
novel concept by proof-of-principle experiments with classical mixtures of weak
coherent microwaves.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure
Tunable and Switchable Coupling Between Two Superconducting Resonators
We realize a device allowing for tunable and switchable coupling between two
superconducting resonators mediated by an artificial atom. For the latter, we
utilize a persistent current flux qubit. We characterize the tunable and
switchable coupling in frequency and time domain and find that the coupling
between the relevant modes can be varied in a controlled way. Specifically, the
coupling can be tuned by adjusting the flux through the qubit loop or by
saturating the qubit. Our time domain measurements allow us to find parameter
regimes for optimal switch performance with respect to qubit drive power and
the dynamic range of the resonator input power
Fatty acid nitroalkenes ameliorate glucose intolerance and pulmonary hypertension in high-fat diet-induced obesity
Aims Obesity is a risk factor for diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, with the incidence of these disorders becoming epidemic. Pathogenic responses to obesity have been ascribed to adipose tissue (AT) dysfunction that promotes bioactive mediator secretion from visceral AT and the initiation of pro-inflammatory events that induce oxidative stress and tissue dysfunction. Current understanding supports that suppressing pro-inflammatory and oxidative events promotes improved metabolic and cardiovascular function. In this regard, electrophilic nitro-fatty acids display pleiotropic anti-inflammatory signalling actions. Methods and results It was hypothesized that high-fat diet (HFD)-induced inflammatory and metabolic responses, manifested by loss of glucose tolerance and vascular dysfunction, would be attenuated by systemic administration of nitrooctadecenoic acid (OA-NO2). Male C57BL/6j mice subjected to a HFD for 20 weeks displayed increased adiposity, fasting glucose, and insulin levels, which led to glucose intolerance and pulmonary hypertension, characterized by increased right ventricular (RV) end-systolic pressure (RVESP) and pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR). This was associated with increased lung xanthine oxidoreductase (XO) activity, macrophage infiltration, and enhanced expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Left ventricular (LV) end-diastolic pressure remained unaltered, indicating that the HFD produces pulmonary vascular remodelling, rather than LV dysfunction and pulmonary venous hypertension. Administration of OA-NO2 for the final 6.5 weeks of HFD improved glucose tolerance and significantly attenuated HFD-induced RVESP, PVR, RV hypertrophy, lung XO activity, oxidative stress, and pro-inflammatory pulmonary cytokine levels. Conclusions These observations support that the pleiotropic signalling actions of electrophilic fatty acids represent a therapeutic strategy for limiting the complex pathogenic responses instigated by obesity.Fil: Kelley, Eric E.. Linking EORTC QLQ-C-30 and PedsQL/PEDQOL physical functioning scores in patients with osteosarcoma
PURPOSE:
The available questionnaires for quality-of-life (QoL) assessments are age-group specific, limiting comparability and impeding longitudinal analyses. The comparability of measurements, however, is a necessary condition for gaining scientific evidence. To overcome this problem, we assessed the viability of harmonising data from paediatric and adult patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures.
METHOD:
To this end, we linked physical functioning scores from the Paediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) and the Paediatric Quality of Life Questionnaire (PEDQOL) to the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Core Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30) for adults. Samples from the EURAMOS-1 QoL sub-study of 75 (PedsQL) and 112 (PEDQOL) adolescent osteosarcoma patients were concurrently administered both paediatric and adult questionnaires on 98 (PedsQL) and 156 (PEDQOL) occasions. We identified corresponding scores using the single-group equipercentile linking method.
RESULTS:
Linked physical functioning scores showed sufficient concordance to the EORTC QLQ-C30: Lin's ρ = 0.74 (PedsQL) and Lin's ρ = 0.64 (PEDQOL).
CONCLUSION:
Score linking provides clinicians and researchers with a common metric for assessing QoL with PRO measures across the entire lifespan of patients
