Crystal Structure of the Sodium Cobaltate Deuterate Superconductor NaxCoO2o4xD2O (x=1/3)
Neutron and x-ray powder diffraction have been used to investigate the
crystal structures of a sample of the newly-discovered superconducting sodium
cobaltate deuterate compound with composition Na0.31(3)CoO2o1.25(2)D2O and its
anhydrous parent compound Na0.61(1)CoO2. The deuterate superconducting compound
is formed by coordinating four D2O molecules (two above and two below) to each
Na ion in a way that gives Na-O distances nearly equal to those in the parent
compound. One deuteron of the D2O molecule is hydrogen bonded to an oxygen atom
in the CoO2 plane and the oxygen atom and the second deuteron of each D2O
molecule lie approximately in a plane between the Na layer and the CoO2 layers.
This coordination of Na by four D2O molecules leads to ordering of the Na ions
and D2O molecules. The sample studied here, which has Tc=4.5 K, has a refined
composition of Na0.31(3)CoO2o1.25(2)D2O, in agreement with the expected 1:4
ratio of Na to D2O. These results show that the optimal superconducting
composition should be viewed as a specific hydrated compound, not a solid
solution of Na and D2O (H2O) in NaxCoO2oyD2O. Studies of physical properties
vs. Na or D2O composition should be viewed with caution until it is verified
that the compound remains in the same phase over the composition range of the
study.Comment: 22 pages, 8 figure
Coulomb and nuclear breakup of B
The cross sections for the (B,Be-) breakup reaction on Ni
and Pb targets at the beam energies of 25.8 MeV and 415 MeV have been
calculated within a one-step prior-form distorted-wave Born approximation. The
relative contributions of Coulomb and nuclear breakup of dipole and quadrupole
multipolarities as well as their interference have been determined. The nuclear
breakup contributions are found to be substantial in the angular distributions
of the Be fragment for angles in the range of 30 - 80 at
25.8 MeV beam energy. The Coulomb-nuclear interference terms make the dipole
cross section larger than that of quadrupole even at this low beam energy.
However, at the incident energy of 415 MeV, these effects are almost negligible
in the angular distributions of the (Be-p) coincidence cross sections at
angles below 4.Comment: Revised version, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Hot Topics in Ultra-Peripheral Collisions
Ultra-peripheral collisions of relativistic heavy ions involve long-ranged
electromagnetic interactions at impact parameters too large for hadronic
interactions to occur. The nuclear charges are large; with the coherent
enhancement, the cross sections are also large. Many types of photonuclear and
purely electromagnetic interactions are possible. We present here an
introduction to ultra-peripheral collisions, and present four of the most
compelling physics topics. This note developed from a discussion at a workshop
on ``Electromagnetic Probes of Fundamental Physics,'' in Erice, Italy, Oct.

Strong suppression of Coulomb corrections to the cross section of e+e- pair production in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions
The Coulomb corrections to the cross section of pair production in
ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions are calculated in the next-to-leading
approximation with respect to the parameter
( are the Lorentz factors of colliding nuclei). We found
considerable reduction of the Coulomb corrections even for large
due to the suppression of the production of pair
with the total energy of the order of a few electron masses in the rest frame
of one of the nuclei. Our result explains why the deviation from the Born
result were not observed in the experiment at SPS.Comment: 4 pages, RevTe
Higher Order Processes in Electromagnetic Production of Electron Positron Pairs in Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions
We study higher-order effects in the electromagnetic production of
electron-positron pairs in relativistic heavy ion collisions. Treating the
field of the heavy ions as an external field and neglecting the interaction
among electrons and positrons, we show that the -pair creation amplitude is
the antisymmetrised product of one-pair creation amplitudes and the vacuum
amplitude. Neglecting contributions coming from exchange terms, we show that
the total probability for pairs is approximately a Poisson distribution. We
investigate further the structure of the reduced one-pair amplitude,
concentrating especially on multiple-particle corrections. We calculate the
first of these corrections in second order Magnus theory based on our previous
result in second-order Born approximation for impact parameter zero.
Explicit calculations show that the total probability is increased up to 10 \%
by this correction for realistic collider parameters. The calculations can also
be used to confirm the use of the Poisson distribution for the total
probability.Comment: 29 pages RevTeX and 12 uuencoded figures (compressed postscript
Semi-Hard Scattering Unraveled from Collective Dynamics by Two-Pion Azimuthal Correlations in 158 A GeV/c Pb + Au Collisions
Elliptic flow and two-particle azimuthal correlations of charged hadrons and
high- pions ( 1 GeV/) have been measured close to mid-rapidity in
158A GeV/ Pb+Au collisions by the CERES experiment. Elliptic flow ()
rises linearly with to a value of about 10% at 2 GeV/. Beyond
1.5 GeV/, the slope decreases considerably, possibly indicating
a saturation of at high . Two-pion azimuthal anisotropies for
1.2 GeV/ exceed the elliptic flow values by about 60% in mid-central
collisions. These non-flow contributions are attributed to near-side and
back-to-back jet-like correlations, the latter exhibiting centrality dependent
broadening.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. Letters, 4 pages, 5 figure

Scenarios about the long-time damage of silicon as material and detectors operating beyond LHC collider conditions
For the new hadron collider LHC and some of its updates in luminosity and
energy, as SLHC and VLHC, the silicon detectors could represent an important
option, especially for the tracking system and calorimetry. The main goal of
this paper is to analyse the expected long-time degradation in the bulk of the
silicon as material and for silicon detectors, in continuous radiation field,
in these hostile conditions. The behaviour of silicon in relation to various
scenarios for upgrade in energy and luminosity is discussed in the frame a
phenomenological model developed previously by the authors. Different silicon
material parameters resulting from different technologies are considered to
evaluate what materials are harder to radiation and consequently could minimise
the degradation of device parameters in conditions of continuous long time
operation.Comment: submitted to Physica Scripta Work in the frame of CERN RD-50

Inclusive meson production in peripheral collisions of ultrarelativistic heavy ions
There exist several proposals to use Weizs\"{a}cker-Williams photons
generated by ultrarelativistic heavy ions to produce exotic particles in
fusion reactions. To estimate the background conditions for such
reactions we analyze various mechanisms of meson production in very peripheral
collisions of ultrarelativistic heavy ions at RHIC and LHC energies. Besides
fusion they include also electromagnetic interactions
and strong nucleon-nucleon interactions in grazing collisions. All these
processes are characterised by low multiplicities of produced particles.
and events are simulated by corresponding Monte Carlo codes,
RELDIS and FRITIOF. In each of these processes a certain fraction of pions is
produced close to the mid-rapidity region that gives a background for the
events. The possibility of selecting mesons produced in
fusion events via different cut procedures is
demonstrated.Comment: 27 pages with 4 eps-figures included, uses axodraw.sty Tab.2 and 3

A light-fronts approach to electron-positron pair production in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions
We perform a gauge-transformation on the time-dependent Dirac equation
describing the evolution of an electron in a heavy-ion collision to remove the
explicit dependence on the long-range part of the interaction. We solve, in an
ultra-relativistic limit, the gauged-transformed Dirac equation using
light-front variables and a light-fronts representation, obtaining
non-perturbative results for the free pair-creation amplitudes in the collider
frame. Our result reproduces the result of second-order perturbation theory in
the small charge limit while non-perturbative effects arise for realistic
charges of the ions.Comment: 39 pages, Revtex, 7 figures, submitted to PR
