The VizieR database of Astronomical Catalogues
VizieR is a database grouping in an homogeneous way thousands of astronomical
catalogues gathered since decades by the Centre de Donnees de Strasbourg (CDS)
and participating institutes. The history and current status of this large
collection is briefly presented, and the way these catalogues are being
standardized to fit in the VizieR system is described. The architecture of the
database is then presented, with emphasis on the management of links and of
accesses to very large catalogues. Several query interfaces are currently
available, making use of the ASU protocol, for browsing purposes or for use by

The QUEST-La Silla AGN Variability Survey
We present the characterization and initial results from the QUEST-La Silla
AGN variability survey. This is an effort to obtain well sampled optical light
curves in extragalactic fields with unique multi-wavelength observations. We
present photometry obtained from 2010 to 2012 in the XMM-COSMOS field, which
was observed over 150 nights using the QUEST camera on the ESO-Schmidt
telescope. The survey uses a broadband filter, the -band, similar to the
union of the and the filters, achieving an intrinsic photometric
dispersion of mag, and a systematic error of mag in the
zero-point. Since some detectors of the camera show significant non-linearity,
we use a linear correlation to fit the zero-points as a function of the
instrumental magnitudes, thus obtaining a good correction to the non-linear
behavior of these detectors. We obtain good photometry to an equivalent
limiting magnitude of . Studying the optical variability of X-ray
detected sources in the XMM-COSMOS field, we find that the survey is
% complete to magnitudes , and % complete to a
magnitude . The determination and parameterization of the structure
function () of the variable sources shows
that most BL AGN are characterized by and . It is
further shown that variable NL AGN and GAL sources occupying the same parameter
space in and are very likely to correspond to obscured or low
luminosity AGN. Our samples are, however, small, and we expect to revisit these
results using larger samples with longer light curves obtained as part of our

Brain Activity During Autobiographical Retrieval Is Modulated by Emotion and Vividness: Informing the Role of the Amygdala
Growing evidence indicates that the amygdala contributes to processing both emotional stimuli and highly vivid episodic memories. The present research used event-related potentials (ERPs) to examine the individual and joint contributions of these dimensions on the neural responses to naturalistic stimuli, namely, autobiographical memories, which vary in terms of associated emotion and the vividness of recollection. In Experiment 1, participants recalled positive and negative personal memories, and memories for which no mention of emotion was made. Events recollected with high vividness showed no effect of emotion, whereas ERPs for events recollected with low vividness differed for both positive and negative memories versus non-emotional memories. The conjoint effects of emotion and vividness reflect the correlation of these variables in everyday life: more emotional memories are more vividly recalled. In Experiment 2, we pursued the interaction of emotion and vividness by asking participants to recall negative high-arousal, negative low-arousal, and emotionally neutral memories. Processing differed by vividness but not by emotion condition. The research implies that focus on the emotional valence associated with a memory, without conjoint consideration of how vividly it is recalled, neglects a critical determinant of neural processes that are modulated by the amygdala during recall of autobiographical memories

Case of Asperger's Syndrome and Lesion of the Right Amygdala: Deficits in Implicit and Explicit Fearful Face Recognition
Introduction: Studies of brain-damaged patients revealed that amygdala lesions cause deficits in the processing and recognition of emotional faces. Patients with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) have similar deficits also related to dysfunctions of the limbic system including the amygdala.Methods: We investigated a male patient who had been diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome. He also presented with a lesion of the right mesial temporal cortex, including the amygdala. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate neuronal processing during a passive viewing task of implicit and explicit emotional faces. Clinical assessment included a facial emotion recognition task.Results: There was no amygdala activation on both sides during the presentation of masked emotional faces compared to the no-face control condition. Presentation of unmasked happy and angry faces activated the left amygdala compared to the no-face control condition. There was no amygdala activation in response to unmasked fearful faces on both sides. In the facial emotion recognition task, the patient biased positive and neutral expressions as negative.Conclusions: This case report describes a male patient with right amygdala damage and an ASD. He displayed a non-response of the amygdala to fearful faces and tended to misinterpret fearful expressions. Moreover, a non-reactivity of both amygdalae to emotional facial expressions at an implicit processing level was revealed. It is discussed whether the deficient implicit processing of facial emotional information and abnormalities in fear processing could contribute and aggravate the patient's impairments in social behavior and interaction
