Co-evolution: Applications and Implications for Governance Research in Communication Studies
A co-evolutionary theoretical framework offers new concepts and methods for communication governance researchers. These concepts and methods are particularly well suited to study problems with strong interdependencies between actors. Such problems often develop in a dynamic, open-ended way and are associated with high levels of uncertainty. Many important, pressing governance tasks in convergent communication sectors, such as efforts to regulate digital platforms, could benefit from integrating insights from co-evolutionary models. For some problems, such as global internet governance, co-evolutionary models may be the only way to develop a robust understanding of the available governance options. This chapter introduces the co-evolution concept, points to applications in communication governance research, and presents models and tools that could enrich future research. It also highlights the implications of its applications for communications governance, summarizes the strengths and limitations of the approach, and gives a brief outlook of further developments
Reducing theoretical uncertainties in mb and lambda1
We calculate general moments of the lepton energy spectrum in inclusive
semileptonic B -> X_c l \nu decay. Moments which allow the determination of
mb^{1S} and lambda1 with theoretical uncertainties Delta(mb^{1S}) ~ 0.04 GeV
and Delta(lambda1) ~ 0.05 GeV^2 are presented. The short distance 1S mass is
used to extract a mass parameter free of renormalon ambiguities. Moments which
are insensitive to mb and lambda1 and therefore test the size of the 1/mb^3
matrix elements and the validity of the OPE are also presented. Finally, we
give an expression for the total branching ratio with a lower cut on the lepton
energy, which allows one to eliminate a source of model dependence in current
determinations of |Vcb| from B -> X_c l \nu decay.Comment: 8 pages, one figur
The vision of this project is to develop a continuous process that allows very easy and efficient design, calculation and joint optimization of surface-like structures made of precast concrete elements. This should support and encourage the production of free forms, such as “blobs” and hanging forms made of concrete
Efficiency of a Brownian information machine
A Brownian information machine extracts work from a heat bath through a
feedback process that exploits the information acquired in a measurement. For
the paradigmatic case of a particle trapped in a harmonic potential, we
determine how power and efficiency for two variants of such a machine operating
cyclically depend on the cycle time and the precision of the positional
measurements. Controlling only the center of the trap leads to a machine that
has zero efficiency at maximum power whereas additional optimal control of the
stiffness of the trap leads to an efficiency bounded between 1/2, which holds
for maximum power, and 1 reached even for finite cycle time in the limit of
perfect measurements.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figure
(„Consumers’ Need for Uniqueness“ und „Desire for Unique Consumer Products“) im deutschen Sprachraum überprüft.
Trace gas sensing using DFB laser and QCL with miniaturized 3D-printed photoacoustic gas cells
Miniaturized 3D-printed photoacoustic trace gas sensors are presented, targeting gas species with absorption features in the telecommunications band as well as the mid-infrared with recovered gas concentrations down to the parts-per-billion range
