The influence of substrate temperature on growth of para-sexiphenyl thin films on Ir{111} supported graphene studied by LEEM
The growth of para-sexiphenyl (6P) thin films as a function of substrate
temperature on Ir{111} supported graphene flakes has been studied in real-time
with Low Energy Electron Microscopy (LEEM). Micro Low Energy Electron
Diffraction (\mu LEED) has been used to determine the structure of the
different 6P features formed on the surface. We observe the nucleation and
growth of a wetting layer consisting of lying molecules in the initial stages
of growth. Graphene defects -- wrinkles -- are found to be preferential sites
for the nucleation of the wetting layer and of the 6P needles that grow on top
of the wetting layer in the later stages of deposition. The molecular structure
of the wetting layer and needles is found to be similar. As a result, only a
limited number of growth directions are observed for the needles. In contrast,
on the bare Ir{111} surface 6P molecules assume an upright orientation. The
formation of ramified islands is observed on the bare Ir{111} surface at 320 K
and 352 K, whereas at 405 K the formation of a continuous layer of upright

Determination of spin and orbital magnetization in the ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe
International audienceThe magnetism in the ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe has been studied using a combination of magnetic Compton scattering, bulk magnetization, X-ray magnetic circular dichroism and electronic structure calculations, in order to determine the spin and orbital moments. The experimentally observed total spin moment, Ms, was found to be-0.24 ± 0.05 µB at 5 T. By comparison with the total moment of 0.16 ± 0.01 µB, the orbital moment, M l , was determined to be 0.40 ± 0.05 µB. The U and Co spin moments were determined to be antiparallel. We find that the U 5f electrons carry a spin moment of Us ≈-0.30 µB and that there is a Co spin moment of Cos ≈ 0.06 µB induced via hybridization. The ratio U l /Us, of −1.3 ± 0.3, shows the U moment to be itinerant. In order to ensure an accurate description of the properties of 5f systems, and to provide a critical test of the theoretical approaches, it is clearly necessary to obtain experimental data for both the spin and orbital moments, rather than just the total magnetic moment. Headache in people with epilepsy
Epidemiological estimates indicate that individuals with epilepsy are more likely to experience headaches, including migraine, than individuals without epilepsy. Headaches can be temporally unrelated to seizures, or can occur before, during or after an episode; seizures and migraine attacks are mostly not temporally linked. The pathophysiological links between headaches (including migraine) and epilepsy are complex and have not yet been fully elucidated. Correct diagnoses and appropriate treatment of headaches in individuals with epilepsy is essential, as headaches can contribute substantially to disease burden. Here, we review the insights that have been made into the associations between headache and epilepsy over the past 5 years, including information on the pathophysiological mechanisms and genetic variants that link the two disorders. We also discuss the current best practice for the management of headaches co-occurring with epilepsy and highlight future challenges for this area of research.Paroxysmal Cerebral Disorder
Simulating Turbulence Using the Astrophysical Discontinuous Galerkin Code TENET
In astrophysics, the two main methods traditionally in use for solving the
Euler equations of ideal fluid dynamics are smoothed particle hydrodynamics and
finite volume discretization on a stationary mesh. However, the goal to
efficiently make use of future exascale machines with their ever higher degree
of parallel concurrency motivates the search for more efficient and more
accurate techniques for computing hydrodynamics. Discontinuous Galerkin (DG)
methods represent a promising class of methods in this regard, as they can be
straightforwardly extended to arbitrarily high order while requiring only small
stencils. Especially for applications involving comparatively smooth problems,
higher-order approaches promise significant gains in computational speed for
reaching a desired target accuracy. Here, we introduce our new astrophysical DG
code TENET designed for applications in cosmology, and discuss our first
results for 3D simulations of subsonic turbulence. We show that our new DG
implementation provides accurate results for subsonic turbulence, at
considerably reduced computational cost compared with traditional finite volume
methods. In particular, we find that DG needs about 1.8 times fewer degrees of
freedom to achieve the same accuracy and at the same time is more than 1.5
times faster, confirming its substantial promise for astrophysical

Force-Extension Relations for Polymers with Sliding Links
Topological entanglements in polymers are mimicked by sliding rings
(slip-links) which enforce pair contacts between monomers. We study the
force-extension curve for linear polymers in which slip-links create additional
loops of variable size. For a single loop in a phantom chain, we obtain exact
expressions for the average end-to-end separation: The linear response to a
small force is related to the properties of the unstressed chain, while for a
large force the polymer backbone can be treated as a sequence of Pincus--de
Gennes blobs, the constraint effecting only a single blob. Generalizing this

Study protocol; Thyroid hormone Replacement for Untreated older adults with Subclinical hypothyroidism - a randomised placebo controlled Trial (TRUST).
Subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) is a common condition in elderly people, defined as elevated serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) with normal circulating free thyroxine (fT4). Evidence is lacking about the effect of thyroid hormone treatment. We describe the protocol of a large randomised controlled trial (RCT) of Levothyroxine treatment for SCH.
Participants are community-dwelling subjects aged ≥65 years with SCH, diagnosed by elevated TSH levels (≥4.6 and ≤19.9 mU/L) on a minimum of two measures ≥ three months apart, with fT4 levels within laboratory reference range. The study is a randomised double-blind placebo-controlled parallel group trial, starting with levothyroxine 50 micrograms daily (25 micrograms in subjects <50Kg body weight or known coronary heart disease) with titration of dose in the active treatment group according to TSH level, and a mock titration in the placebo group. The primary outcomes are changes in two domains (hypothyroid symptoms and fatigue / vitality) on the thyroid-related quality of life questionnaire (ThyPRO) at one year. The study has 80% power (at p = 0.025, 2-tailed) to detect a change with levothyroxine treatment of 3.0% on the hypothyroid scale and 4.1% on the fatigue / vitality scale with a total target sample size of 750 patients. Secondary outcomes include general health-related quality of life (EuroQol), fatal and non-fatal cardiovascular events, handgrip strength, executive cognitive function (Letter Digit Coding Test), basic and instrumental activities of daily living, haemoglobin, blood pressure, weight, body mass index and waist circumference. Patients are monitored for specific adverse events of interest including incident atrial fibrillation, heart failure and bone fracture.
This large multicentre RCT of levothyroxine treatment of subclinical hypothyroidism is powered to detect clinically relevant change in symptoms / quality of life and is likely to be highly influential in guiding treatment of this common condition.
