    Effect of Modifiers on the Microstructure of Rapidly Solidified AlSi10Mg Alloy

    In this work, melt-spun ribbons of AlSi10Mg added with modifiers (Er, Sr, or nano-TiB2) were produced to investigate the combined effect of modification and rapid solidification on eutectic Si. The resulting eutectic microstructures are more isotropic in comparison to that of the base alloy affecting the mechanical properties of the alloys. The modification of Si morphology and supersaturation caused by the modifiers were investigated by microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and differential scanning calorimetry. Compared to melt-spun AlSi10Mg, the eutectic Si network is finer and less continuous when Er or Sr is added, and disrupted with rounded crystals dispersed in the matrix when adding nano-TiB2. The level of supersaturation decreases in the order Er–nano-TiB2–Sr. A transition from columnar Al grains at the wheel side to finer equiaxed grains at the air side was found in the unmodified ribbon and in the one containing nano-TiB2 by means of electron backscattered diffraction. The Er- and Sr-modified ribbons display equiaxed Al grains of constant size throughout their thickness. The average hardness obtained by nano-indentation tests was lower than that of AlSi10Mg. The less continuous Si network causes the hardness drop but provides more isotropic mechanical properties

    Sex- and age-related differences in the contribution of ultrasound-measured visceral and subcutaneous abdominal fat to fatty liver index in overweight and obese Caucasian adults

    Differences in body fat distribution may be a reason for the sex-, age-, and ethnicity-related differences in the prevalence of fatty liver disease (FL). This study aimed to evaluate the sex- and age-related differences in the contribution of visceral (VAT) and subcutaneous (SAT) abdominal fat, measured by ultrasound, to fatty liver index (FLI) in a large sample of overweight and obese Caucasian adults, and to identify the VAT and SAT cut-off values predictive of high FL risk. A cross-sectional study on 8103 subjects was conducted. Anthropometrical measurements were taken and biochemical parameters measured. VAT and SAT were measured by ultrasonography. FLI was higher in men and increased with increasing age, VAT, and SAT. The sex*VAT, age*VAT, sex*SAT, and age*SAT interactions negatively contributed to FLI, indicating a lower VAT and SAT contribution to FLI in men and in the elderly for every 1 cm of increment. Because of this, sex- and age-specific cut-off values for VAT and SAT were estimated. In conclusion, abdominal adipose tissue depots are associated with FLI, but their contribution is sex- and age-dependent. Sex- and age-specific cut-off values of ultrasound-measured VAT and SAT are suggested, but they need to be validated in external populations

    External Validation Of Equations To Estimate Resting Energy Expenditure In 14952 Adults With Overweight And Obesity And 1948 Adults With Normal Weight From Italy

    Background & aims: We cross-validated 28 equations to estimate resting energy expenditure (REE) in a very large sample of adults with overweight or obesity. Methods: 14952 Caucasian men and women with overweight or obesity and 1498 with normal weight were studied. REE was measured using indirect calorimetry and estimated using two meta-regression equations and 26 other equations. The correct classification fraction (CCF) was defined as the fraction of subjects whose estimated REE was within 10% of measured REE. Results: The highest CCF was 79%, 80%, 72%, 64%, and 63% in subjects with normal weight, overweight, class 1 obesity, class 2 obesity, and class 3 obesity, respectively. The Henry weight and height and Mifflin equations performed equally well with CCFs of 77% vs. 77% for subjects with normal weight, 80% vs. 80% for those with overweight, 72% vs. 72% for those with class 1 obesity, 64% vs. 63% for those with class 2 obesity, and 61% vs. 60% for those with class 3 obesity. The Sabounchi meta-regression equations offered an improvement over the above equations only for class 3 obesity (63%). Conclusions: The accuracy of REE equations decreases with increasing values of body mass index. The Henry weight & height and Mifflin equations are similarly accurate and the Sabounchi equations offer an improvement only in subjects with class 3 obesity

    External Validation of Equations to Estimate Resting Energy Expenditure in 2037 Children and Adolescents with and 389 without Obesity : a Cross-Sectional Study

    We performed an external cross-validation study of 10 equations to estimate resting energy expenditure (REE) in 2037 children with and 389 without obesity. Inclusion criteria were Caucasian ethnicity, age 64 18 years, and availability of REE. REE was measured using indirect calorimetry. The correct classification fraction (CCF) of an equation was defined as the fraction of subjects whose estimated REE was within 10% of measured REE. The Moln\ue1r equation was the most accurate REE prediction equation with CCFs of 0.70 (95% CI 0.65 to 0.76) in girls without obesity, 0.64 (95% CI 0.61 to 0.66) in girls with obesity, 0.76 (95% CI 0.67 to 0.83) in boys without obesity, and 0.66 (95% CI 0.63 to 0.69) in boys with obesity. The Mifflin equation was the second most accurate equation with CCFs of 0.67 (95% CI 0.61 to 0.73) in girls without obesity, 0.61 (95% CI 0.58 to 0.64) in girls with obesity, 0.75 (95% CI 0.66 to 0.82) in boys without obesity, and 0.66 (95% CI 0.63 to 0.69) in boys with obesity

    Evaluation of body composition as a potential biomarker in spinal muscular atrophy

    INTRODUCTION: We aimed to investigate the correlation between body composition (BC) and spinal muscular atrophy (SMA)-specific motor function assessments. METHODS: Patients with SMA types I or II, aged 1 to 10\u2009years, were recruited in this cross-sectional study. The protocol included anthropometric measurements, and dual-energy X-ray absoprtiometry to assess fat mass (FM), lean mass (LM), fat-free mass (FFM), FM and FFM indexes (FMI, FFMI), and motor function assessments (Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Infant Test of Neuromuscular Disorders scale for SMAI, and Hammersmith Functional Motor Scale-Expanded for SMAII). RESULTS: Eighty-eight children were included. All had a higher FM percentage than reference values. Motor function was moderately correlated with body mass index (BMI), FFMI, and LMI in SMAI, and weakly correlated with FFMI, LMI, and LM:FM ratio in SMAII. DISCUSSION: BC shows promise as a potential biomarker for SMA, but further studies are needed
