Application of a New Non-Linear Least Squares Velocity Curve Analysis Technique for Spectroscopic Binary Stars
Using measured radial velocity data of nine double lined spectroscopic binary
systems NSV 223, AB And, V2082 Cyg, HS Her, V918 Her, BV Dra, BW Dra, V2357
Oph, and YZ Cas, we find corresponding orbital and spectroscopic elements via
the method introduced by Karami & Mohebi (2007a) and Karami & Teimoorinia
(2007). Our numerical results are in good agreement with those obtained by

Ultrasonic Evaluation of Joint Involvement in Established RA: Active Synovitis Predicts Switching in Suspected Biologic Failure.
An Optical Study of BG Geminorum: An Ellipsoidal Binary with an Unseen Primar Star
We describe optical photometric and spectroscopic observations of the bright
variable BG Geminorum. Optical photometry shows a pronounced ellipsoidal
variation of the K0 I secondary, with amplitudes of ~0.5 mag at VRI and a
period of 91.645 days. A deep primary eclipse is visible for wavelengths <
4400A; a shallower secondary eclipse is present at longer wavelengths. Eclipse
timings and the radial velocity curve of the K0 secondary star indicate an
interacting binary where a lobe-filling secondary, M_2 ~ 0.5 Msun, transfers
material into a extended disk around a massive primary, M_1 ~ 4.5 Msun. The
primary star is either an early B-type star or a black hole. If it did contain
a black hole, BG Gem would be the longest period black hole binary known by a

Radial velocity measurements of B stars in the Scorpius-Centaurus association
We derive single-epoch radial velocities for a sample of 56 B-type stars
members of the subgroups Upper Scorpius, Upper Centaurus Lupus and Lower
Centaurus Crux of the nearby Sco-Cen OB association. The radial velocity
measurements were obtained by means of high-resolution echelle spectra via
analysis of individual lines. The internal accuracy obtained in the
measurements is estimated to be typically 2-3 km/s, but depends on the
projected rotational velocity of the target. Radial velocity measurements taken
for 2-3 epochs for the targets HD120307, HD142990 and HD139365 are variable and
confirm that they are spectroscopic binaries, as previously identified in the
literature. Spectral lines from two stellar components are resolved in the
observed spectra of target stars HD133242, HD133955 and HD143018, identifying
them as spectroscopic binaries.Comment: accepted for publication in A&
Testing Rotational Mixing Predictions with New Boron Abundances in Main Sequence B-type Stars
(Abridged) New boron abundances for seven main-sequence B-type stars are
determined from HST STIS spectroscopy around the BIII 2066A line. Boron
abundances provide a unique and critical test of stellar evolution models that
include rotational mixing since boron is destroyed in the surface layers of
stars through shallow mixing long before other elements are mixed from the
stellar interior through deep mixing. Boron abundances range from 12+log(B/H) =
1.0 to 2.2. The boron abundances are compared to the published values of their
stellar nitrogen abundances (all have 12+log(N/H) < 7.8, i.e., they do not show
significant CNO-mixing) and to their host cluster ages (4 to 16 Myr) to
investigate the predictions from models of massive star evolution with
rotational mixing effects (Heger & Langer 2000). Only three stars (out of 34)
deviate from the model predictions, including HD36591, HD205021, and HD30836.
These three stars suggest that rotational mixing could be more efficient than

Evidence for Transmission of Bluetongue Virus Serotype 26 through Direct Contact
The aim of this study was to assess the mechanisms of transmission of bluetongue virus serotype 26 (BTV-26) in goats. A previous study, which investigated the pathogenicity and infection kinetics of BTV-26 in goats, unexpectedly revealed that one control goat may have been infected through a direct contact transmission route. To investigate the transmission mechanisms of BTV-26 in more detail an experimental infection study was carried out in which three goats were infected with BTV-26, three goats were kept uninfected, but were housed in direct contact with the infected goats, and an additional four goats were kept in indirect contact separated from infected goats by metal gates. This barrier allowed the goats to have occasional face-to-face contact in the same airspace, but feeding, watering, sampling and environmental cleaning was carried out separately. The three experimentally infected goats did not show clinical signs of BTV, however high levels of viral RNA were detected and virus was isolated from their blood. At 21 dpi viral RNA was detected in, and virus was isolated from the blood of the three direct contact goats, which also seroconverted. The four indirect barrier contact goats remained uninfected throughout the duration of the experiment. In order to assess replication in a laboratory model species of Culicoides biting midge, more than 300 Culicoides sonorensis were fed a BTV-26 spiked blood meal and incubated for 7 days. The dissemination of BTV-26 in individual C. sonorensis was inferred from the quantity of virus RNA and indicated that none of the insects processed at day 7 possessed transmissible infections. This study shows that BTV-26 is easily transmitted through direct contact transmission between goats, and the strain does not seem to replicate in C. sonorensis midges using standard incubation conditions

Children and young people’s perspectives from UK lockdown: leisure-less experiences
If researchers are to understand the impacts of lockdown on children and young people, then the experiences of lockdown need to be explored from the perspective of the child. Young people participate in leisure for a multitude of reasons, yet, within the UK, children were largely unable to access their regular leisure activities for a six-month period during the first national lockdown. Within the context of this paper, leisure includes outdoor sports and physical activities within blue spaces. Following interviews with parents and young people (aged 11–16) focused on experiences of leisure during the Covid-19 pandemic, this qualitative study identified that children felt an intense sense of missing out on opportunities and found day-to-day life without leisure monotonous. However, there were some positive impacts of reduced leisure, such as a greater appreciation for what was once a regular activity. This research empowered the voice of children, so their distinct experiences were made visible to those who aim to support their wellbeing. Findings suggest that the promotion of leisure activities in the current climate could mitigate poor wellbeing among children associated with the Covid-19 pandemic
Annual variability in the seasonal cycles of chlorophyll, nutrients and zooplankton on the North-West European continental shelf
Seasonal cycles of salinity, nutrients, chlorophyll and zooplankton at 8 locations on the West-European shelf were analysed with respect to their timing and magnitude in the period 1980-1984. A late spring bloom with low chlorophyll values (2-4 mg.m-³) is observed in the Irish Sea, off the Scottish east coast and the Channel entrance. An early spring bloom and relatively high chlorophyll values (7-12 mg.m-³) are found in the southern Bight and the Skagerrak, whereas a late spring bloom with high chlorophyll concentrations (24 mg.m-³) is found along the Dutch and Belgian coast. In contrast to the other regions, the peak of the phytoplankton cycle in the German Bight (Helgoland) occurs in the summer period instead of the spring period. The peak in the yearly abundance of copepods shifts from May-June in the south to July-August in the north of the shelf. In the Irish Sea and the Channel entrance two seasonal copepods peaks are observed. The January nitrate values in Irish Sea, the southern Bight and the Skagerrak are about 20 % higher than those in the Atlantic input signal in the Channel entrance and east off Scotland. The January DIP values in these regions are comparable to those of the input signal, but the Irish Sea forms an exception here the level is increased by 10-20%. If compared with the Atlantic input signal the January values for nitrate and DIP at the Dutch and Belgium coast are about 10 and 4, and in the German Bight (Helgoland) 4 and 3 times higher, respectively. At most sites changes in the seasonal cycles of chorophyll coincide with changes in nutrient concentrations, wheras the maximum level of the seasonal signal is related to the nutrient levels
