Epic Imaginings
Epic Imaginings showcases the rich landscape of contemporary poetry in epic form. Some selections are book-length narratives directly referencing (and sometimes even revising) ancient epic poetry, such as Anne Carson’s The Autobiography of Red and Sara Uribe’s AntĂgona González. Others, like Claudia Rankine’s award-winning Citizen, are long-form explorations on a singular theme (in Rankine’s case, the pervasive implications of racism in America). We invite viewers to spend some time with these poets and their stories. These are not poems to digest in a few minutes—they demand your full attention, immerse you, and expand your understanding of the world.UT Librarie

70 Pages of Change: Improving Queer Representation Online through Strategic Partnerships
Poster was presented at ACRL 2019: Recasting the Narrative on Thursday, April 12, 2019 in Cleveland, OH.Much of the knowledge developed in online spaces skews to a white, cis-male, heteronormative default, creating significant representational gaps in digital spaces. To tackle these representational inequities, academic librarians and MLS students took digital activism to a new level, partnering with public library and public radio staff to organize two events to address gaps in Wikipedia’s LGBTQIA+ representation. In an initial research event, faculty, staff and students identified missing or inadequate Wikipedia entries and located sources to fill those gaps. The second event put those sources to work in a large-scale Wikipedia edit-a-thon, part of a tech and music festival.UT Librarie
Phase Transition and Monopoles Densities in a Nearest Neighbors Two-Dimensional Spin Ice Model
In this work, we show that, due to the alternating orientation of the spins
in the ground state of the artificial square spin ice, the influence of a set
of spins at a certain distance of a reference spin decreases faster than the
expected result for the long range dipolar interaction, justifying the use of
the nearest neighbor two dimensional square spin ice model as an effective
model. Using an extension of the model presented in ref. [Scientific Reports 5,
15875 (2015)], considering the influence of the eight nearest neighbors of each
spin on the lattice, we analyze the thermodynamics of the model and study the
monopoles and string densities dependence as a function of the temperature.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure
The whatsappers’ turn: new forms of cyberactivism
This article investigates how the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), in particular WhatsApp, has been presented as a central element for the convening and mobilization of cyberactivists in contemporary forms of political participation. For that, it was focused on how the users of the "# United against the coup" group organized protests in 2016 in the city of FlorianĂłpolis in Brazil, in what is commonly known as cyberactivism. The article verified the mobilizing potential of WhatsApp in addition to dichotomous approaches that, on the one hand, enthusiastically defend the democratizing potential of the internet as a sort of "digital agora", on the other, observe its expansion as a tendency towards alienation and demobilization. It is concluded from the empirical analysis that the multiple uses of WhatsApp represented new forms of political participation translated into mechanisms of activation of citizenship and positive impact on the collective forms of sociability of the groupMinisterio de EconomĂa y Competitividad CSO2016-78386-
Understanding values associated with stormwater remediation options in marine coastal ecosystems: A case study from Auckland, New Zealand
This paper describes the design and implementation of a choice experiment to understand Aucklanders’ preferences for environmental qualities associated with the effects of urban run-off on marine coastal environments. Auckland’s coastal environments are affected by a range of ecological and human factors. While much research has been undertaken in the area of ecology, little is understood of human preferences for coastal environments and their management. An unlabelled choice experiment was developed with three environmental quality attributes specified at three broad coastal categories. The environmental qualities are ecological health, water clarity, and underfoot conditions. Willingness to pay estimates for these attributes indicates that respondents show a strong preference for improved environmental quality at outer coastal beach locations over middle and upper harbour locations. Water quality leads ecological health, then underfoot conditions in importance at beach locations. An application is discussed in which a hypothetical project consisting of policy and engineering components delivers changes in water quality and underfoot conditions in the Auckland upper harbour areas. A 95% confidence estimate of the money value of that change ranges from 1,122 b. The key outcome is demonstration of the choice experiment as a statistically robust and flexible approach to making sense of Aucklanders’ complex preferences for coastal ecosystem management.Environmental Economics and Policy, Research Methods/ Statistical Methods,
Team Teaching, Humor, and Informal Polling Techniques in NECDMC - Based Research Data Management Workshops at Brandeis University
Objective: This poster will detail a few pedagogical techniques incorporated into a series of workshops on research data management. These techniques were chosen to better engage workshop participants by making the material more individually relevant and relatable.
Methods: For the second semester in which workshops on research data management (derived from the NECDMC modules) were offered through the Brandeis University Library & Technology Services department, the librarian sought to make the sessions more engaging through several pedagogical techniques. A team teaching approach was employed by inviting senior members of the Technology Help Desk and Hardware Repair Shop to collaborate on and co-teach the workshops. Humor was employed strategically through icons, disaster stories, and select xkcd webcomic strips within the lecture and slides. Informal polling and direct encouragement to share personal anecdotes during the workshop sessions promoted active engagement.
Results: Workshop participants were visibly more engaged, asked a greater number of questions, and questions were more directly relevant to the presented material than participants of the first semester\u27s workshops, before these pedagogical techniques were employed.
Conclusions: Active and engaged learning techniques are difficult to employ in what are essentially one-shot hour-long instruction sessions, particularly when participants are largely unfamiliar with the material at hand. But by integrating some techniques to capture the interest and encourage participants to make connections to their own experiences we observed a deeper understanding and appreciation of the material

Creating an Outreach Plan That Accounts for the Seen and Unforeseen
Outreach is a necessary component of an academic library’s operations and often requires extensive time for the planning, approval, execution, and assessment depending on the personnel involved and the scope of the event. Recent literature has started to examine how academic libraries are planning outreach to align strategically with the goals of their larger institutions, but not how they balance these efforts when new opportunities arise throughout the academic year. This article will provide a brief analysis of the literature which addresses issues that academic librarians who plan outreach face. The second half of this article will provide a case study of how the author planned, created, and implemented an outreach plan at her academic branch library. This case study will detail the process of how she used an outreach plan to establish outreach that was efficient and impactful with limited staffing, while also aligning strategically with the goals of her library and the larger institution. In addition, this case study will detail how she used this outreach plan throughout the 2019-2020 academic year to guide decision making when new outreach opportunities would arise. This article will conclude with lessons learned from this process.Ope
