An explicit KO-degree map and applications
The goal of this note is to study the analog in unstable -homotopy theory of the unit map from the motivic sphere spectrum to the
Hermitian K-theory spectrum, i.e., the degree map in Hermitian K-theory. We
show that "Suslin matrices", which are explicit maps from odd dimensional split
smooth affine quadrics to geometric models of the spaces appearing in Bott
periodicity in Hermitian K-theory, stabilize in a suitable sense to the unit
map. As applications, we deduce that for ,
which can be thought of as an extension of Matsumoto's celebrated theorem
describing of a field. These results provide the first step in a program
aimed at computing the sheaf for .Comment: 36 Pages, Final version, to appear Journal of Topolog
Baryon Fields with U_L(3) \times U_R(3) Chiral Symmetry: Axial Currents of Nucleons and Hyperons
We use the conventional F and D octet and decimet generator matrices to
reformulate chiral properties of local (non-derivative) and one-derivative
non-local fields of baryons consisting of three quarks with flavor SU(3)
symmetry that were expressed in SU(3) tensor form in Ref. [12]. We show
explicitly the chiral transformations of the [(6,3)\oplus(3,6)] chiral
multiplet in the "SU(3) particle basis", for the first time to our knowledge,
as well as those of the (3,\bar{3}) \oplus (\bar{3}, 3), (8,1) \oplus (1,8)
multiplets, which have been recorded before in Refs. [4,5]. We derive the
vector and axial-vector Noether currents, and show explicitly that their zeroth
(charge-like) components close the SU_L(3) \times SU_R(3) chiral algebra. We
use these results to study the effects of mixing of (three-quark) chiral
multiplets on the axial current matrix elements of hyperons and nucleons. We
show, in particular, that there is a strong correlation, indeed a definite
relation between the flavor-singlet (i.e. the zeroth), the isovector (the
third) and the eighth flavor component of the axial current, which is in decent
agreement with the measured ones.Comment: one typo correction, and accepted by PR
Spontaneous violation of chiral symmetry in QCD vacuum is the origin of baryon masses and determines baryon magnetic moments and their other static properties
A short review is presented of the spontaneous violation of chiral symmetry
in QCD vacuum. It is demonstrated, that this phenomenon is the origin of baryon
masses in QCD. The value of nucleon mass is calculated as well as the masses of
hyperons and some baryonic resonances and expressed mainly through the values
of quark condensates -- -- the vacuum
expectation values (v.e.v.) of quark field. The concept of vacuum expectation
values induced by external fields is introduced. It is demonstrated that such
v.e.v. induced by static electromagnetic field results in quark condensate
magnetic susceptibility, which plays the main role in determination of baryon
magnetic moments. The magnetic moments of proton, neutron and hyperons are
calculated. The results of calculation of baryon octet -decay constants
are also presented.Comment: 13 pades, 5 figures. Dedicated to 85-birthday of acad. S.T.Belyaev.

Color Screening and the Suppression of the Charmonium State Yield in Nuclear Reactions
We discuss the new data for the production of the meson in pA
collisions at 450 GeV at CERN-SPS (of the NA50-collaboration) [1]. We extract
from the CERN data mb under the assumption that the
is produced as a result of the space-time evolution of a point-like
pair which expands with time to the full size of the charmonium
state. In the analysis we assume the existence of a relationship between the
distribution of color in a hadron and the cross section of its interaction with
a nucleon. However, our result is rather sensitive to the pattern of the
expansion of the wave packet and significantly larger values of are not ruled out by the data. We show that recent CERN data confirm the
suggestion of [2] that color fluctuations of the strengths in
charmonium-nucleon interaction are the major source of suppression of the
yield as observed at CERN in both pA and AA collisions.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures (one with color
Evidence for nonhadronic degrees of freedom in the transverse mass spectra of kaons from relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions?
We investigate transverse hadron spectra from relativistic nucleus-nucleus
collisions which reflect important aspects of the dynamics - such as the
generation of pressure - in the hot and dense zone formed in the early phase of
the reaction. Our analysis is performed within two independent transport
approaches (HSD and UrQMD) that are based on quark, diquark, string and
hadronic degrees of freedom. Both transport models show their reliability for
elementary as well as light-ion (C+C, Si+Si) reactions. However, for
central Au+Au (Pb+Pb) collisions at bombarding energies above 5
AGeV the measured transverse mass spectra have a larger
inverse slope parameter than expected from the calculation. Thus the pressure
generated by hadronic interactions in the transport models above 5
AGeV is lower than observed in the experimental data. This finding shows
that the additional pressure - as expected from lattice QCD calculations at
finite quark chemical potential and temperature - is generated by strong
partonic interactions in the early phase of central Au+Au (Pb+Pb) collisions.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, discussions extended, references added, to be

Comparison of pQCT parameters between ulna and radius in retired elite gymnasts : the skeletal benefits associated with long-term gymnastics are bone- and site-specific
Objectives: To compare the skeletal benefits associated with gymnastics between ulna and radius. Methods: 19 retired artistic gymnasts, aged 18-36 years, were compared to 24 sedentary women. Bone mineral content (BMC), total and cortical bone area (ToA, CoA), trabecular and cortical volumetric density (TrD, CoD) and cortical thickness (CoTh) were measured by pQCT at the 4% and 66% forearm. Results: At the 4% site, BMC and ToA were more than twice greater at the radius than ulna whereas at the 66% site, BMC, ToA, CoA, CoTh and SSIpol were 20 to 51% greater at the ulna than radius in both groups (p<0.0001). At the 4% site, the skeletal benefits in BMC of the retired gymnasts over the non-gymnasts were 1.9 times greater at the radius than ulna (p<0.001), with enlarged bone size at the distal radius only. In contrast, the skeletal benefits at the 66% site were twice greater at the ulna than radius for BMC and CoA (p<0.01).Conclusion: Whereas the skeletal benefits associated with long-term gymnastics were greater at the radius than ulna in the distal forearm, the reverse was found in the proximal forearm, suggesting both bones should be analysed when investigating forearm strength.<br /
High p_T Triggered Delta-eta,Delta-phi Correlations over a Broad Range in Delta-eta
The first measurement of pseudorapidity (Delta-eta) and azimuthal angle
(Delta-phi) correlations between high transverse momentum charged hadrons (p_T
> 2.5 GeV/c) and all associated particles is presented at both short- (small
Delta-eta) and long-range (large Delta-eta) over a continuous pseudorapidity
acceptance (-4<Delta-eta<2). In these proceedings, the various near- and
away-side features of the correlation structure are discussed as a function of
centrality in Au+Au collisions measured by PHOBOS at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV. In
particular, this measurement allows a much more complete determination of the
longitudinal extent of the ridge structure, first observed by the STAR
collaboration over a limited eta range. In central collisions the ridge
persists to at least Delta-eta=4, diminishing in magnitude as collisions become
more peripheral until it disappears around Npart=80.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, presented at the 20th International Conference on

Light from Cascading Partons in Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions
We calculate the production of high energy photons from Compton and
annihilation processes as well as fragmentation off quarks in the parton
cascade model. The multiple scattering of partons is seen to lead to a
substantial production of high energy photons, which rises further when parton
multiplication due to final state radiation is included. The photon yield is
found to be proportional to the number of collisions among the cascading
partons.Comment: revised version: 4 pages, 4 figures, uses REVTEX
Adaptive finite element methods for two-dimensional problems in computational fracture mechanics
Some recent results obtained using solution-adaptive finite element methods in two-dimensional problems in linear elastic fracture mechanics are presented. The focus is on the basic issue of adaptive finite element methods for validating the new methodology by computing demonstration problems and comparing the stress intensity factors to analytical results
Analysis of reaction dynamics at RHIC in a combined parton/hadron transport approach
We introduce a transport approach which combines partonic and hadronic
degrees of freedom on an equal footing and discuss the resulting reaction
dynamics. The initial parton dynamics is modeled in the framework of the parton
cascade model, hadronization is performed via a cluster hadronization model and
configuration space coalescence, and the hadronic phase is described by a
microscopic hadronic transport approach. The resulting reaction dynamics
indicates a strong influence of hadronic rescattering on the space-time pattern
of hadronic freeze-out and on the shape of transverse mass spectra. Freeze-out
times and transverse radii increase by factors of 2 - 3 depending on the hadron
species.Comment: 10 pages, 4 eps figures include
