Propensity of marine reserves to reduce the evolutionary effects of fishing in a migratory species

    Get PDF
Evolutionary effects of fishing can have unwanted consequences diminishing a fishery's value and sustainability. Reserves, or no-take areas, have been proposed as a management tool for reducing fisheries-induced selection, but their effectiveness for migratory species has remained unexplored. Here we develop an eco-genetic model to predict the effects of marine reserves on fisheries-induced evolution under migration. To represent a stock that undergoes an annual migration between feeding and spawning grounds, we draw model parameters from Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) in the northern part of its range. Our analysis leads to the following conclusions: (i) a reserve in stock's feeding grounds, protecting immature and mature fish alike, reduces fisheries-induced evolution, even though protected and unprotected population components mix on the spawning grounds; (ii) in contrast, a reserve in a stock's spawning grounds, protecting only mature fish, has little mitigating effects on fisheries-induced evolution and can sometimes even exacerbate its magnitude; (iii) evolutionary changes that are already underway may be difficult to reverse with a reserve; (iv) directly after a reserve is created or enlarged, most reserve scenarios result in yield losses; and (v) timescale is very important: short-term yield losses immediately after a reserve's creation can give way to long-term gains

Co-polymers of Furan with Pyrrole or Thiophene: A Synthetic Study

    Get PDF
The use of conductive polymers as a substitute for metallic conductors and semiconductors has attracted much attention in the literature. In particular, aromatic heterocyclic polymers constitute an important class since they possess chemical and electrical stability in both the oxidized (doped) and neutral (undoped) state. Doping a polymer allows one to vary its electrical, mechanical, optical, and thermal properties. The properties of these polymers are promising for their many technological uses such as antistatic coatings, solar cells, and electronic devises. Polyfuran is among the least common heterocyclic polymers. Polyfuran has been reported to be much less stable that either polypyrrole or polythiophene. The preparation of co-polymers of polyfuran with two percent pyrrole or thiophene is reported. The polymers are characterized by *HNMR, IR, and ESR spectroscopy, and the electrical conductivity of the doped and un-doped synthetic polyfuran and co-polymers is provided

Animation as an aid to support the teaching of cyber security concepts

    Get PDF
Animated learning materials have the potential to support the teaching and learning process. In this paper, we examine the comparative usefulness of animated and static learning materials for teaching cyber security concepts to a group of UK undergraduate computer science students. The animated cyber security learning materials appeared to be viewed by the undergraduate computer science participants overall as being slightly more informative than the equivalent static learning materials for learning some cyber security concepts

Game theory for computer games design

    Get PDF
Designing and developing computer games can be a complex activity that may involve professionals from a variety of disciplines. In this article, we examine the use of game theory for supporting the design of game play within the different sections of a computer game, and demonstrate its application in practice via adapted high-level decision trees for modelling the flow in game play and payoff matrices for modelling skill or challenge levels

A productivity dashboard for hospitals: an empirical study

    Get PDF
Health information systems are key assets in managing health units’ daily operations. Nevertheless, literature is scarce concerning information systems for increasing and managing hospital productivity. This study aims at filling such gap through an empirical research based on large Portuguese hospital. Specifically, a dashboard prototype is proposed addressing productivity indicators in areas such as assistance, hospitalization, surgery, among others. This dashboard is tuned using a design science research approach where health experts successively validate the prototype. Interviews are conducted to assess the benefits of using our proposal to manage productivity on a daily basis.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Intraaortic Balloon Pump Counterpulsation and Cerebral Autoregulation: an observational study

    Get PDF
The use of Intra-aortic counterpulsation is a well established supportive therapy for patients in cardiac failure or after cardiac surgery. Blood pressure variations induced by counterpulsation are transmitted to the cerebral arteries, challenging cerebral autoregulatory mechanisms in order to maintain a stable cerebral blood flow. This study aims to assess the effects on cerebral autoregulation and variability of cerebral blood flow due to intra-aortic balloon pump and inflation ratio weaning

Toenail selenium concentrations and bladder cancer risk in women and men

    Get PDF
Prediagnostic selenium concentrations measured in archived toenails were inversely associated with bladder cancer risk in women (P for trend=0.02), but not in men, in a nested case–control study of 338 cases and 341 matched controls. These findings may be due to chance and more studies are needed to determine whether associations between selenium and bladder cancer risk differ by sex
