Elliptic Flow, Initial Eccentricity and Elliptic Flow fluctuations in Heavy Ion Collisions at RHIC
We present measurements of elliptic flow and event-by-event fluctuations
established by the PHOBOS experiment. Elliptic flow scaled by participant
eccentricity is found to be similar for both systems when collisions with the
same number of participants or the same particle area density are compared. The
agreement of elliptic flow between Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions provides evidence
that the matter is created in the initial stage of relativistic heavy ion
collisions with transverse granularity similar to that of the participant
nucleons. The event-by-event fluctuation results reveal that the initial
collision geometry is translated into the final state azimuthal particle
distribution, leading to an event-by-event proportionality between the observed

The varying role of the GP in the pathway between colonoscopy and surgery for colorectal cancer: a retrospective cohort study
Extent: 11p.Objectives: To describe general practitioner (GP) involvement in the treatment referral pathway for colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. Design: A retrospective cohort analysis of linked data. Setting: A population-based sample of CRC patients diagnosed from August 2004 to December 2007 in New South Wales, Australia, using the 45 and Up Study, cancer registry diagnosis records, inpatient hospital records and Medicare claims records. Participants: 407 CRC patients who had a colonoscopy followed by surgery. Primary outcome measures: Patterns of GP consultations between colonoscopy and surgery (ie, between diagnosis and treatment). We investigated whether consulting a GP presurgery was associated with time to surgery, postsurgical GP consultations or rectal cancer cases having surgery in a centre with radiotherapy facilities. Results: Of the 407 patients, 43% (n=175) had at least one GP consultation between colonoscopy and surgery. The median time from colonoscopy to surgery was 27â
days for those with an intervening GP consultation and 15â
days for those without the consultation. 55% (n=223) had a GP consultation up to 30â
days postsurgery; it was more common in cases of patients who consulted a GP presurgery than for those who did not (65% and 47%, respectively, adjusted OR 2.71, 95% CI 1.50 to 4.89, p=0.001). Of the 142 rectal cancer cases, 23% (n=33) had their surgery in a centre with radiotherapy facilities, with no difference between those who did and did not consult a GP presurgery (21% and 25% respectively, adjusted OR 0.84, 95% CI 0.27 to 2.63, p=0.76). Conclusions: Consulting a GP between colonoscopy and surgery was associated with a longer interval between diagnosis and treatment, and with further GP consultations postsurgery, but for rectal cancer cases it was not associated with treatment in a centre with radiotherapy facilities. Minimal Forbidden Factors of Circular Words
Minimal forbidden factors are a useful tool for investigating properties of
words and languages. Two factorial languages are distinct if and only if they
have different (antifactorial) sets of minimal forbidden factors. There exist
algorithms for computing the minimal forbidden factors of a word, as well as of
a regular factorial language. Conversely, Crochemore et al. [IPL, 1998] gave an
algorithm that, given the trie recognizing a finite antifactorial language ,
computes a DFA recognizing the language whose set of minimal forbidden factors
is . In the same paper, they showed that the obtained DFA is minimal if the
input trie recognizes the minimal forbidden factors of a single word. We
generalize this result to the case of a circular word. We discuss several
combinatorial properties of the minimal forbidden factors of a circular word.
As a byproduct, we obtain a formal definition of the factor automaton of a
circular word. Finally, we investigate the case of minimal forbidden factors of

Comparative Anatomy and Petrophysical Property Structure of Seaward- and Landward- Stepping Deltaic Reservoir Analogs, Ferron Sandstone, Utah
The recovery of natural gas from fluvial-deltaic reservoirs is governed by complex internal architectures. To aid in the translation of outcrop geology to reservoir equivalents, all existing Ferron outcrop, petrophysical, and subsurface data have been integrated into a geologic model of reservoir heterogeneity that compares and contrasts seaward- and landward-stepping stratigraphic cycles. Reservoir architecture varies in a predictable fashion between seaward- and landward-stepping stratigraphic cycles. Within seaward-stepping units, delta-front strata are highly compartmentalized by marine and marginal marine shales coincident with stratigraphic cycle, parasequence, and mouth-bar bounding surfaces. Coeval distributaries are volumetrically a minor component and are preserved as ribbon-like sand bodies encased in finer-grained strata. By contrast, within landward-stepping units, parasequences and component mouth-bar deposits are amalgamated into a lithologically homogeneous strike-elongate sand body. Coeval distributaries are volumetrically a major component and are preserved as a complex network of interconnected, lithologically diverse sand bodies. Internal heterogeneities, related to floodplain, abandoned channel fill, and mud-clast lag deposits, severely disrupt lateral and vertical continuity. Analysis of the Ferron gas field reveals that favorable sites for stratigraphic entrapment occur where proximal and distal portions of parasequences pinch out into lagoonal and marine mudstones, respectively.Bureau of Economic Geolog
Moving Mirrors and Thermodynamic Paradoxes
Quantum fields responding to "moving mirrors" have been predicted to give
rise to thermodynamic paradoxes. I show that the assumption in such work that
the mirror can be treated as an external field is invalid: the exotic
energy-transfer effects necessary to the paradoxes are well below the scales at
which the model is credible. For a first-quantized point-particle mirror, it
appears that exotic energy-transfers are lost in the quantum uncertainty in the
mirror's state. An accurate accounting of these energies will require a model
which recognizes the mirror's finite reflectivity, and almost certainly a model
which allows for the excitation of internal mirror modes, that is, a

Casimir-Polder forces, boundary conditions and fluctuations
We review different aspects of the atom-atom and atom-wall Casimir-Polder
forces. We first discuss the role of a boundary condition on the interatomic
Casimir-Polder potential between two ground-state atoms, and give a physically
transparent interpretation of the results in terms of vacuum fluctuations and
image atomic dipoles. We then discuss the known atom-wall Casimir-Polder force
for ground- and excited-state atoms, using a different method which is also
suited for extension to time-dependent situations. Finally, we consider the
fluctuation of the Casimir-Polder force between a ground-state atom and a
conducting wall, and discuss possible observation of this force fluctuation.Comment: 5 page
Possibilities for pedagogy in Further Education: Harnessing the abundance of literacy
In this report, it is argued that the most salient factor in the contemporary communicative landscape is the sheer abundance and diversity of possibilities for literacy, and that the extent and nature of students' communicative resources is a central issue in education. The text outlines the conceptual underpinnings of the Literacies for Learning in Further Education project in a social view of literacy, and the associated research design, methodology and analytical framework. It elaborates on the notion of the abundance of literacies in students' everyday lives, and on the potential for harnessing these as resources for the enhancement of learning. It provides case studies of changes in practice that have been undertaken by further education staff in order to draw upon students' everyday literacy practices on Travel and Tourism and Multimedia courses. It ends with some of the broad implications for conceptualising learning that arise from researching through the lens of literacy practices
Differential Photoelectron Holography: A New Approach for Three-Dimensional Atomic Imaging
We propose differential holography as a method to overcome the long-standing
forward-scattering problem in photoelectron holography and related techniques
for the three-dimensional imaging of atoms. Atomic images reconstructed from
experimental and theoretical Cu 3p holograms from Cu(001) demonstrate that this
method suppresses strong forward-scattering effects so as to yield more
