Elliptic Flow, Initial Eccentricity and Elliptic Flow fluctuations in Heavy Ion Collisions at RHIC
We present measurements of elliptic flow and event-by-event fluctuations
established by the PHOBOS experiment. Elliptic flow scaled by participant
eccentricity is found to be similar for both systems when collisions with the
same number of participants or the same particle area density are compared. The
agreement of elliptic flow between Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions provides evidence
that the matter is created in the initial stage of relativistic heavy ion
collisions with transverse granularity similar to that of the participant
nucleons. The event-by-event fluctuation results reveal that the initial
collision geometry is translated into the final state azimuthal particle
distribution, leading to an event-by-event proportionality between the observed

Minimal Forbidden Factors of Circular Words
Minimal forbidden factors are a useful tool for investigating properties of
words and languages. Two factorial languages are distinct if and only if they
have different (antifactorial) sets of minimal forbidden factors. There exist
algorithms for computing the minimal forbidden factors of a word, as well as of
a regular factorial language. Conversely, Crochemore et al. [IPL, 1998] gave an
algorithm that, given the trie recognizing a finite antifactorial language ,
computes a DFA recognizing the language whose set of minimal forbidden factors
is . In the same paper, they showed that the obtained DFA is minimal if the
input trie recognizes the minimal forbidden factors of a single word. We
generalize this result to the case of a circular word. We discuss several
combinatorial properties of the minimal forbidden factors of a circular word.
As a byproduct, we obtain a formal definition of the factor automaton of a
circular word. Finally, we investigate the case of minimal forbidden factors of

Moving Mirrors and Thermodynamic Paradoxes
Quantum fields responding to "moving mirrors" have been predicted to give
rise to thermodynamic paradoxes. I show that the assumption in such work that
the mirror can be treated as an external field is invalid: the exotic
energy-transfer effects necessary to the paradoxes are well below the scales at
which the model is credible. For a first-quantized point-particle mirror, it
appears that exotic energy-transfers are lost in the quantum uncertainty in the
mirror's state. An accurate accounting of these energies will require a model
which recognizes the mirror's finite reflectivity, and almost certainly a model
which allows for the excitation of internal mirror modes, that is, a

Possibilities for pedagogy in Further Education: Harnessing the abundance of literacy
In this report, it is argued that the most salient factor in the contemporary communicative landscape is the sheer abundance and diversity of possibilities for literacy, and that the extent and nature of students' communicative resources is a central issue in education. The text outlines the conceptual underpinnings of the Literacies for Learning in Further Education project in a social view of literacy, and the associated research design, methodology and analytical framework. It elaborates on the notion of the abundance of literacies in students' everyday lives, and on the potential for harnessing these as resources for the enhancement of learning. It provides case studies of changes in practice that have been undertaken by further education staff in order to draw upon students' everyday literacy practices on Travel and Tourism and Multimedia courses. It ends with some of the broad implications for conceptualising learning that arise from researching through the lens of literacy practices
High-Q Nanomechanics via Destructive Interference of Elastic Waves
Mechanical dissipation poses an ubiquitous challenge to the performance of
nanomechanical devices. Here we analyze the support-induced dissipation of
high-stress nanomechanical resonators. We develop a model for this loss
mechanism and test it on silicon nitride membranes with circular and square
geometries. The measured Q-values of different harmonics present a
non-monotonic behavior which is successfully explained. For azimuthal harmonics
of the circular geometry we predict that destructive interference of the
radiated waves leads to an exponential suppression of the clamping loss in the
harmonic index. Our model can also be applied to graphene drums under high

Differential Photoelectron Holography: A New Approach for Three-Dimensional Atomic Imaging
We propose differential holography as a method to overcome the long-standing
forward-scattering problem in photoelectron holography and related techniques
for the three-dimensional imaging of atoms. Atomic images reconstructed from
experimental and theoretical Cu 3p holograms from Cu(001) demonstrate that this
method suppresses strong forward-scattering effects so as to yield more
accurate three-dimensional images of side- and back-scattering atoms.Comment: revtex, 4 pages, 2 figure

Electromagnetic Transition in Waveguide with Application to Lasers
The electromagnetic transition of two-level atomic systems in a waveguide is
calculated. Compared with the result in free space, the spontaneous emission
rate decrease because the phase space is smaller, and meanwhile, some resonance
appears in some cases. Moreover, the influence of non-uniform electromagnetic
field in a waveguide on absorption and stimulated emission is considered.
Applying the results to lasers, a method to enhance the laser power is
