Citation Counts and Evaluation of Researchers in the Internet Age
Bibliometric measures derived from citation counts are increasingly being
used as a research evaluation tool. Their strengths and weaknesses have been
widely analyzed in the literature and are often subject of vigorous debate. We
believe there are a few fundamental issues related to the impact of the web
that are not taken into account with the importance they deserve. We focus on
evaluation of researchers, but several of our arguments may be applied also to
evaluation of research institutions as well as of journals and conferences.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, 3 table

While genetic programming has had a huge impact on the research community, it is fair to say that its impact on industry and practitioners has been much smaller. In this commentary we elaborate on this claim and suggest some broad research goals aimed at greatly increasing such impact
Study of RPC gas mixtures for the ARGO-YBJ experiment
The ARGO-YBJ experiment consists of a RPC carpet to be operated at the
Yangbajing laboratory (Tibet, P.R. China), 4300 m a.s.l., and devoted to the
detection of showers initiated by photon primaries in the energy range 100 GeV
- 20 TeV. The measurement technique, namely the timing on the shower front with
a few tens of particles, requires RPC operation with 1 ns time resolution, low
strip multiplicity, high efficiency and low single counting rate. We have
tested RPCs with many gas mixtures, at sea level, in order to optimize these

Atmospheric CO2 decline during the Pliocene intensification of Northern Hemisphere glaciations
Several hypotheses have been put forward to explain the onset of intensive glaciations on Greenland, Scandinavia, and North America during the Pliocene epoch between 3.6 and 2.7 million years ago (Ma). A decrease in atmospheric CO_2 may have played a role during the onset of glaciations, but other tectonic and oceanic events occurring at the same time may have played a part as well. Here we present detailed atmospheric CO_2 estimates from boron isotopes in planktic foraminifer shells spanning 4.6-2.0 Ma. Maximal Pliocene atmospheric CO_2 estimates gradually declined from values around 410 ÎĽatm to early Pleistocene values of 300 ÎĽatm at 2.0 Ma. After the onset of large-scale ice sheets in the Northern Hemisphere, maximal pCO_2 estimates were still at 2.5 Ma +90 ÎĽatm higher than values characteristic of the early Pleistocene interglacials. By contrast, Pliocene minimal atmospheric CO_2 gradually decreased from 310 to 245 ÎĽatm at 3.2 Ma, coinciding with the start of transient glaciations on Greenland. Values characteristic of early Pleistocene glacial atmospheric CO_2 of 200 ÎĽatm were abruptly reached after 2.7 Ma during the late Pliocene transition. This trend is consistent with the suggestion that ocean stratification and iron fertilization increased after 2.7 Ma in the North Pacific and Southern Ocean and may have led to increased glacial CO_2 storage in the oceanic abyss after 2.7 Ma onward
Are sleep problems related to psychological distress in healthy aging during the covid-19 pandemic? A review
The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, characterized by home confinement and other restrictive measures to reduce the spread of the infection, led to significant changes in people’s habits and lifestyle. One of the most common problems is the worsening of sleep quality or quantity, which could have negative effects on psychological wellbeing, particularly in older adults. The purposes of the present literature review considering healthy aging subjects are (a) to examine the existing research on sleep alterations during the current pandemic and (b) to highlight possible relationships between sleep problems and psychological distress. A systematic search strategy was implemented according to PRISMA guidelines in the international literature online databases, up to 1 July 2021. After identification and screening phases, 11 articles were included in this review. The studies found possible associations between sleep problems and mood changes—particularly in terms of depression and anxiety. In addition, altered sleep patterns seemed to be related to changes in individual aspects, lifestyle, and attitudes adopted by older adults during the COVID-19 lockdown. Thus, the pandemic could affect the sleep and psychological wellbeing of the older population, even in healthy aging
Preoperative liver registration for augmented monocular laparoscopy using backward–forward biomechanical simulation
PURPOSE: Augmented reality for monocular laparoscopy from a preoperative volume such as CT is achieved in two steps. The first step is to segment the organ in the preoperative volume and reconstruct its 3D model. The second step is to register the preoperative 3D model to an initial intraoperative laparoscopy image. To date, there does not exist an automatic initial registration method to solve the second step for the liver in the de facto operating room conditions of monocular laparoscopy. Existing methods attempt to solve for both deformation and pose simultaneously, leading to nonconvex problems with no optimal solution algorithms. METHODS: We propose in contrast to break the problem down into two parts, solving for (i) deformation and (ii) pose. Part (i) simulates biomechanical deformations from the preoperative to the intraoperative state to predict the liver’s unknown intraoperative shape by modeling gravity, the abdominopelvic cavity’s pressure and boundary conditions. Part (ii) rigidly registers the simulated shape to the laparoscopy image using contour cues. RESULTS: Our formulation leads to a well-posed problem, contrary to existing methods. This is because it exploits strong environment priors to complement the weak laparoscopic visual cues. CONCLUSION: Quantitative results with in silico and phantom experiments and qualitative results with laparosurgery images for two patients show that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art in accuracy and registration time
Tunable genetic devices through simultaneous control of transcription and translation
Abstract
Synthetic genetic circuits allow us to modify the behavior of living cells. However, changes in environmental conditions and unforeseen interactions with the host cell can cause deviations from a desired function, resulting in the need for time-consuming reassembly to fix these issues. Here, we use a regulatory motif that controls transcription and translation to create genetic devices whose response functions can be dynamically tuned. This allows us, after construction, to shift the on and off states of a sensor by 4.5- and 28-fold, respectively, and modify genetic NOT and NOR logic gates to allow their transitions between states to be varied over a >6-fold range. In all cases, tuning leads to trade-offs in the fold-change and the ability to distinguish cellular states. This work lays the foundation for adaptive genetic circuits that can be tuned after their physical assembly to maintain functionality across diverse environments and design contexts
