    Propane Dehydrogenation by Autothermal Reforming

    The proposed design is for the the production of propene through propane dehydrogenation using Thyssen Krupp’s STAR technology and a hybrid membrane separation. The plant has a capacity of 700 kT/yr and will be located in the Middle East. At current propane/propene prices, the use of Thyssen Krupp’s STAR process and hybrid membrane separation is not economical and has a negative IRR. The NPV of this project at current market prices is -$865MM. However, economic feasibility depends on volatile market conditions. The process begins with the oxydehydrogenation section, consisting of four reformers connected to four oxyreactors that are cycled to allow for regeneration of the .2-.6%Pt- Sn/ZnAl2O5 catalyst. In order to produce polymer grade propene, a separation is needed following dehydrogenation. Separation operations include adsorption, MEA absorption system, distillation, and a hybrid distillation/membrane C3 splitter

    Re-presenting the Paralympics: (contested) philosophies, production practices and the hypervisibility of disability

    Studies that have engaged para-sport broadcasting, particularly through a narrative lens, have almost exclusively relied on textual and/or content analysis of the Paralympic Games as the source of cultural critique. We know far less about the decisions taken inside Paralympic broadcasters that have led to such representations. In this study – based on interviews with senior production and promotion staff at the UK’s Paralympic broadcaster, Channel 4 – we provide the first detailed examination of mediated para-sport from this vantage point. We explore the use of promotional devices such as athletes’ backstories – the “Hollywood treatment” – to both hook audiences and serve as a vehicle for achieving its social enterprise mandate to change public attitudes toward disability. In so doing, we reveal myriad tensions that coalesce around representing the Paralympics; with respect to the efforts made to balance the competing goals of key stakeholders and a stated desire to make the Paralympics both a commercial and socially progressive success

    Efficient Strict-Binning Particle-in-Cell Algorithm for Multi-Core SIMD Processors

    International audienceParticle-in-Cell (PIC) codes are widely used for plasma simulations. On recent multi-core hardware, performance of these codes is often limited by memory bandwidth. We describe a multi-core PIC algorithm that achieves close-to-minimal number of memory transfers with the main memory, while at the same time exploiting SIMD instructions for numerical computations and exhibiting a high degree of OpenMP-level parallelism. Our algorithm keeps particles sorted by cell at every time step, and represents particles from a same cell using a linked list of fixed-capacity arrays, called chunks. Chunks support either sequential or atomic insertions, the latter being used to handle fast-moving particles. To validate our code, called Pic-Vert, we consider a 3d electrostatic Landau-damping simulation as well as a 2d3v transverse instability of magnetized electron holes. Performance results on a 24-core Intel Sky-lake hardware confirm the effectiveness of our algorithm, in particular its high throughput and its ability to cope with fast moving particles

    In [2], 1D×1D two-species Vlasov-Poisson simulations are performed by the semi-Lagrangian method. Thanks to a classical first order dispersion analysis, we are able to check the validity of their simulations; the extension to second order is performed and shown to be relevant for explaining further details. In order to validate multi-dimensional effects, we propose a 2D × 2D single species test problem that has true 2D effects coming from the sole second order dispersion analysis. Finally, we perform, in the same code, full 2D × 2D non linear two-species simulations with mass ratio 0:01, and consider the mixing of semi-Lagrangian and Particle-in-Cell methods

    OptiTrust: an Interactive Optimization Framework

    International audienceWe present OptiTrust, an interactive framework for optimizing general-purpose C code via series of programmer-guided, source-to-source transformations. Optimization steps are described in transformation scripts, expressed as OCaml programs. At every step, the programmer may interactively visualize the effect of the transformation as the difference between two pieces of human-readable C code. OptiTrust has been previously employed to optimize numerical simulation code. In this work, we showcase how to use OptiTrust to optimize matrix multiplication. We compare against TVM, which also relies on programmer guidance, but which restricts the input language and lacks easily readable feedback

Using a proposal by Polyakov, we reduce the partition function of the Toda field theory on the hyperelliptic surface to a product of partition functions: one of a free field theory on the sphere with inserted Toda vertex operators and one of a free scalar field theory with antiperiodic boundary conditions with inserted twist fields

    When is Women\u27s Benevolent Sexism Associated with Support for Other Women\u27s Agentic Responses to Gender-Based Threat?

    Three studies examine how women\u27s benevolent sexism (BS) shapes support for other women\u27s agentic responses to gender-based threat. In Study 1, women read vignettes about a woman who agentically responded (vs. no response) to gender-based threat (e.g., sexism). As hypothesized, BS predicted more positive attitudes towards the woman who chose not to challenge sexism and more negative attitudes towards the woman who did. Studies 2 and 3 focused on whether these effects are driven by the behaviour displayed by the target (response or not) or by the ideology it seeks to uphold (traditional or non-traditional). There may be circumstances under which BS is associated with positive attitudes towards women\u27s agentic (i.e., non-gender role conforming) behaviour, for instance, when it is used to support traditional gender roles. Studies 2 and 3 showed that when women\u27s agentic behaviour is used to uphold traditional gender roles (vs. challenge them), BS is positively associated with support for such behaviour. These findings underscore the importance of ideology underlying women\u27s agentic behaviour: BS can support women\u27s agentic responses that violate prescribed gender roles, so long as they reinforce the status quo
