The Globular Cluster Systems around NGC 3311 and NGC 3309
We present extensive new photometry in (g',i') of the large globular cluster
(GC) system around NGC 3311, the central cD galaxy in the Hydra cluster. Our
GMOS data cover a 5.5' field of view and reach a limiting magnitude i' = 26,
about 0.5 magnitude fainter than the turnover point of the GC luminosity
function. We find that NGC 3311 has a huge population of ~16, 000 GCs, closely
similar to the prototypical high specific frequency Virgo giant M87. The
color-magnitude distribution shows that the metal-poor blue GC sequence and the
metal-richer red sequence are both present, with nearly equal numbers of
clusters. Bimodal fits to the color distributions confirm that the blue
sequence shows the same trend of progressively increasing metallicity with GC
mass that has previously been found in many other large galaxies; the
correlation we find corresponds to a scaling of GC metallicity with mass of Z ~
M^0.6 . By contrast, the red sequence shows no change of mean metallicity with
mass, but it shows an upward extension to much higher than normal luminosity
into the UCD-like range, strengthening the potential connections between
massive GCs and UCDs. The GC luminosity function, which we measure down to the
turnover point at M_I = -8.4, also has a normal form like those in other giant
ellipticals. Within the Hydra field, another giant elliptical NGC 3309 is
sitting just 100" from the cD NGC 3311. We use our data to solve simultaneously
for the spatial structure and total GC populations of both galaxies at once.
Their specific frequencies are S_N (NGC 3311) = 12.5 +/- 1.5 and S_N (NGC 3309)
= 0.6 +/-0.4. NGC 3311 is completely dominant and entirely comparable with

Is Dentistry at Risk? A Case for Interprofessional Education
The goal of interprofessional education (IPE) is to bring various professional groups together in the educational environment to promote collaborative practice and improve the health care of patients. Interest in IPE has been sparked by several factors in the health care system, including the increased awareness of oral-systemic connections, an aging population, the shift of the burden of illness from acute to chronic care, and lack of access to basic oral care. Increasingly, since the publication of the U.S. surgeon general's report in 2000, the dialogue surrounding IPE in dentistry has escalated. But how has dentistry changed regarding IPE since the report was released? This position paper argues that little has changed in the way dental students are taught and prepared to participate in IPE. The authors contend that academic dentistry and organized dentistry must take the lead in initiating and demanding IPE if dental students are to be prepared to work in the health care environment of the twenty-first century. Included are reasons why IPE is necessary and why dentistry must lead the conversation and participate in the solution to the oral health care crisis. It explores existing models and alternate approaches to IPE, barriers to implementation, and proposed strategies for academic institutions
Neutrino-less Double Beta Decay and Particle Physics
We review the particle physics aspects of neutrino-less double beta decay.
This process can be mediated by light massive Majorana neutrinos (standard
interpretation) or by something else (non-standard interpretations). The
physics potential of both interpretations is summarized and the consequences of
future measurements or improved limits on the half-life of neutrino-less double
beta decay are discussed. We try to cover all proposed alternative realizations
of the decay, including light sterile neutrinos, supersymmetric or left-right
symmetric theories, Majorons, and other exotic possibilities. Ways to
distinguish the mechanisms from one another are discussed. Experimental and
nuclear physics aspects are also briefly touched, alternative processes to
double beta decay are discussed, and an extensive list of references is

Transport, optical and electronic properties of the half metal CrO2
The electronic structure of CrO_2 is critically discussed in terms of the
relation of existing experimental data and well converged LSDA and GGA
calculations of the electronic structure and transport properties of this half
metal magnet, with a particular emphasis on optical properties. We find only
moderate manifestations of many body effects. Renormalization of the density of
states is not large and is in the typical for transition metals range. We find
substantial deviations from Drude behavior in the far-infrared optical
conductivity. These appear because of the unusually low energy of interband
optical transitions. The calculated mass renormalization is found to be rather
sensitive to the exchange-correlation functional used and varies from 10%
(LSDA) to 90% (GGA), using the latest specific heat data. We also find that
dressing of the electrons by spin fluctuations, because of their high energy,
renormalizes the interband optical transition at as high as 4 eV by about 20%.
Although we find no clear indications of strong correlations of the Hubbard
type, strong electron-magnon scattering related to the half metallic band
structure is present and this leads to a nontrivial temperature dependence of
the resistivity and some renormalization of the electron spectra.Comment: 9 Revtex 2 column pages, including 8 postscript figures. Two more
