    Magnetic Energy and Helicity Budgets in the Active-Region Solar Corona. I. Linear Force-Free Approximation

    We self-consistently derive the magnetic energy and relative magnetic helicity budgets of a three-dimensional linear force-free magnetic structure rooted in a lower boundary plane. For the potential magnetic energy we derive a general expression that gives results practically equivalent to those of the magnetic Virial theorem. All magnetic energy and helicity budgets are formulated in terms of surface integrals applied to the lower boundary, thus avoiding computationally intensive three-dimensional magnetic field extrapolations. We analytically and numerically connect our derivations with classical expressions for the magnetic energy and helicity, thus presenting a so-far lacking unified treatment of the energy/helicity budgets in the constant-alpha approximation. Applying our derivations to photospheric vector magnetograms of an eruptive and a noneruptive solar active regions, we find that the most profound quantitative difference between these regions lies in the estimated free magnetic energy and relative magnetic helicity budgets. If this result is verified with a large number of active regions, it will advance our understanding of solar eruptive phenomena. We also find that the constant-alpha approximation gives rise to large uncertainties in the calculation of the free magnetic energy and the relative magnetic helicity. Therefore, care must be exercised when this approximation is applied to photospheric magnetic field observations. Despite its shortcomings, the constant-alpha approximation is adopted here because this study will form the basis of a comprehensive nonlinear force-free description of the energetics and helicity in the active-region solar corona, which is our ultimate objective.Comment: 44 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables.     Nonuniform and coherent motion of superconducting vortices in the picometer-per-second regime

    We investigated vortex dynamics in a single-crystal sample of type-II superconductor NbSe2_{2} using scanning tunneling microscopy at 4.2 K. The decay of the magnetic field at a few nT/s in our superconducting magnet induced the corresponding motion of vortices at a few pm/s. Starting with an initial magnetic field of 0.5 T, we continued to observe motion of vortices within a field of view of 400×\times400 nm2^2 subject to decay of the magnetic field over a week. Vortices moved collectively, and maintained triangular lattices due to strong vortex-vortex interactions during the motion. However, we observed two peculiar characteristics of vortex dynamics in this superconductor. First, the speed and direction of the vortex lattice motion were not uniform in time. Second, despite the non-uniform motion, we also found that there exists an energetically favored configuration of the moving vortices in the single-crystal sample of NbSe2_{2} based on the overlaid trajectories and their suppressed speeds.     Discourse revisited : dimensions and employment of first-order strategy discourse during institutional adoption

    Despite decades of research on strategy, we still know little about what the concept of strategy means to actual strategists and how they use it in practice. Working at the intersections of institutional and practice theories, we use exploratory interviews with strategy directors and a longitudinal case study to uncover four dimensions of first-order strategy discourse: functional, contextual, identity, and metaphorical. We also reveal three phases in the interrelation between first-order strategy discourse and institutional work: shaping, settling, and selling and a differential emphasis (selective focusing) on dimensions of the first-order strategy discourse during the institutional adoption process. We contribute to a deeper understanding of the concept of strategy in practice, the process of institutional adoption, and of the role of discourse in this process

    Non-uniform doping across the Fermi surface of NbS2_2 intercalates

    Magnetic ordering of the first row transition metal intercalates of NbS2_2 due to coupling between the conduction electrons and the intercalated ions has been explained in terms of Fermi surface nesting. We use angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy to investigate the Fermi surface topology and the valence band structure of the quasi-two-dimensional layer compounds Mn1/3_{1/3}NbS2_2 and Ni1/3_{1/3}NbS2_2. Charge transfer from the intercalant species to the host layer leads to non-uniform, pocket selective doping of the Fermi surface.     Eigenvector localization as a tool to study small communities in online social networks

    We present and discuss a mathematical procedure for identification of small "communities" or segments within large bipartite networks. The procedure is based on spectral analysis of the matrix encoding network structure. The principal tool here is localization of eigenvectors of the matrix, by means of which the relevant network segments become visible. We exemplified our approach by analyzing the data related to product reviewing on Amazon.com. We found several segments, a kind of hybrid communities of densely interlinked reviewers and products, which we were able to meaningfully interpret in terms of the type and thematic categorization of reviewed items. The method provides a complementary approach to other ways of community detection, typically aiming at identification of large network modules

    Amici are teachers in New York law schools who have studied the operation of the death penalty for the purpose of teaching the subject, writing about it in scholarly journals, or representing persons accused or convicted of capital crimes. Most of us have worked in the field both as academics and as pro bono counsel for condemned inmates. Collectively, we have had first-hand experience in hundreds of death cases, in dozens of jurisdictions, extending over more than a third of a century. Our experience has convinced us that capital punishment cannot be administered with the fairness, reliability, and freedom from discrimination that a penalty so grave and irreversible requires. This is no accident or transitory condition; it is the consequence of certain innate attributes of the penalty of death. The purpose of our brief is to analyze those attributes and explain why they are fundamentally at war with the Cruel and Unusual Punishments Clause and the Antidiscrimination Clause of New York’s Bill of Rights. We hope to persuade the Court that it should not temporize with the death penalty in the face of this basic incompatibility but should hold the 1995 death penalty statute altogether unconstitutional

    Specificity of the Multi-Target Stool DNA Test for Colorectal Cancer Screening in Average-Risk 45–49 Year-Olds: A Cross-Sectional Study

    High-specificity colorectal cancer screening is desirable to triage patients <50 years for colonoscopy; however, most endorsed colorectal cancer screening tests have not been rigorously evaluated in younger populations. This prospective cross-sectional study determined the specificity of the multitarget stool DNA (mt-sDNA) test in an average-risk screening population of 45 to 49 year-olds. Specificity was the primary outcome and was measured in participants without colorectal cancer or advanced precancerous lesions [APL– advanced adenomas (AA), and sessile serrated lesions ≥10 mm], and in the subgroup of participants with negative colonoscopic findings. APL sensitivity was a secondary outcome. The evaluable cohort included those who completed the study without protocol deviations and had a usable mt-sDNA test. Of 983 enrolled participants, 816 formed the evaluable cohort, with a mean age of 47.8 (SD, 1.5) years; 47.7% were women. No participants had colorectal cancer, 49 had APL, 253 had nonadvanced adenomas (NAA), and 514 had negative colonoscopic findings. mt-sDNA test specificity was 95.2% (95% CI, 93.4–96.6) in participants with NAA or negative findings [96.3% (confidence interval (CI), 94.3%–97.8%)] in those with negative findings, and did not differ by sex (P = 0.75) or race (P = 0.36) in participants with NAA or negative findings. Sensitivity for APL was 32.7% (CI, 19.9–47.5%), with most APL (83.7%) measuring 10–19 mm and none having high-grade dysplasia. The area under the ROC curve for discriminating between APL and lesser findings was 0.72 (CI, 0.64–0.81). mt-sDNA's high specificity would help minimize risk from unnecessary diagnostic procedures in this age group. This study shows that mt-sDNA has high specificity among average-risk 45 to 49-year olds, supporting its use as a noninvasive option for colorectal cancer screening
