    The stransverse mass, MT2, in special cases

    This document describes some special cases in which the stransverse mass, MT2, may be calculated by non-iterative algorithms. The most notable special case is that in which the visible particles and the hypothesised invisible particles are massless -- a situation relevant to its current usage in the Large Hadron Collider as a discovery variable, and a situation for which no analytic answer was previously known. We also derive an expression for MT2 in another set of new (though arguably less interesting) special cases in which the missing transverse momentum must point parallel or anti parallel to the visible momentum sum. In addition, we find new derivations for already known MT2 solutions in a manner that maintains manifest contralinear boost invariance throughout, providing new insights into old results.     Control System for the LEDA 6.7-MeV Proton Beam Halo Experiment

    Measurement of high-power proton beam-halo formation is the ongoing scientific experiment for the Low Energy Demonstration Accelerator (LEDA) facility. To attain this measurement goal, a 52-magnet beam line containing several types of beam diagnostic instrumentation is being installed. The Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System (EPICS) and commercial software applications are presently being integrated to provide a real-time, synchronous data acquisition and control system. This system is comprised of magnet control, vacuum control, motor control, data acquisition, and data analysis. Unique requirements led to the development and integration of customized software and hardware. EPICS real-time databases, Interactive Data Language (IDL) programs, LabVIEW Virtual Instruments (VI), and State Notation Language (SNL) sequences are hosted on VXI, PC, and UNIX-based platforms which interact using the EPICS Channel Access (CA) communication protocol. Acquisition and control hardware technology ranges from DSP-based diagnostic instrumentation to the PLC-controlled vacuum system.     Automated visual tracking for studying the ontogeny of zebrafish swimming

    The zebrafish Danio rerio is a widely used model organism in studies of genetics, developmental biology, and recently, biomechanics. In order to quantify changes in swimming during all stages of development, we have developed a visual tracking system that estimates the posture of fish. Our current approach assumes planar motion of the fish, given image sequences taken from a top view. An accurate geometric fish model is automatically designed and fit to the images at each time frame. Our approach works across a range of fish shapes and sizes and is therefore well suited for studying the ontogeny of fish swimming, while also being robust to common environmental occlusions. Our current analysis focuses on measuring the influence of vertebra development on the swimming capabilities of zebrafish. We examine wild-type zebrafish and mutants with stiff vertebrae (stocksteif) and quantify their body kinematics as a function of their development from larvae to adult (mutants made available by the Hubrecht laboratory, The Netherlands). By tracking the fish, we are able to measure the curvature and net acceleration along the body that result from the fish's body wave. Here, we demonstrate the capabilities of the tracking system for the escape response of wild-type zebrafish and stocksteif mutant zebrafish. The response was filmed with a digital high-speed camera at 1500 frames s–1. Our approach enables biomechanists and ethologists to process much larger datasets than possible at present. Our automated tracking scheme can therefore accelerate insight in the swimming behavior of many species of (developing) fish

    Features of a Separating Turbulent Boundary Layer as Revealed by Laser and Hot-Film Anemometry

    Experiments have been performed to determine the fundamental nature of boundary layer separation produced by an adverse pressure gradient. Measurements upstream and downstream of the separation zone have been made utilizing laser and hot-film anemometry techniques. A completely mobile backscattering laser anemometer was developed. This alone is a significant development because of the relatively long focal lengths required for measurements in a 36 wide wind tunnel. Signal processing was achieved by a digital signal sampling and storage system. Both mean and fluctuating velocities in both the unseparated and separated flow regions were measured. Experimental results are in fairly good agreement with hot-film measurements, with some recent improvements in data acquisition being noted. Flush-wall hot-film sensors were used to determine wall shear stresses and fluctuations, both upstream and downstream of separation. These data indicate that the law of the wall apparently is valid up to the location of intermittent separation or the location of intermittent backflow next to the wall. Visual observations indicate that the location of intermittent separation is in agreement with Sandborn\u27s criterion. The outer region flow downstream of the beginning of separation is characterized by a similarity mixing-layer velocity profile

    COMPTEL upper limits for Seyfert galaxies

    The gamma‐ray emission of Seyfert galaxies has fallen far short of pre‐GRO expectations. No single object of this class has been detected by either COMPTEL or EGRET, and OSSE has detected only a fraction of the Seyferts expected. To derive a more stringent upper limit to the emission from these objects in the energy ranges 0.75 to 1 and 1 to 3 MeV, we have summed a large number of COMPTEL observations acquired during Phase 1 of the GRO mission. From a total of 47 observations of 23 individual X‐ray selected Seyfert galaxies, we derive preliminary upper limits of 8×10−8 photons/(cm2 s keV) in the 0.75‐1 MeV band and 1×10−8 photons/(cm2 s keV) in the 1‐3 MeV band

    The X-ray Spectrum of the Rapid Burster using the Chandra HETGS

    We present observations of the Rapid Burster (RB, also known as MXB 1730-335) using the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer. The average interval between type II (accretion) bursts was about 40 s. There was one type I (thermonuclear flash) burst and about 20 "mini-bursts" which are probably type II bursts whose peak flux is 10-40% of the average peak flux of the other type II bursts. The time averaged spectra of the type II bursts are well fit by a blackbody with a temperature of kT = 1.6 keV, a radius of 8.9 km for a distance of 8.6 kpc, and an interstellar column density of 1.7e22 per sq. cm. No narrow emission or absorption lines were clearly detected. The 3 sigma upper limits to the equivalent widths of any features are < 10 eV in the 1.1-7.0 keV band and as small as 1.5 eV near 1.7 keV. We suggest that Comptonization destroys absorption features such as the resonance line of Fe XXVI.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in AJ (with minor changes and enhanced discussion of the instrument configuration

    The broad-line region and dust torus size of the Seyfert 1 galaxy PGC50427

    We present the results of a three years monitoring campaigns of the z=0.024z = 0.024 type-1 active galactic nucleus (AGN) PGC50427. Through the use of Photometric Reverberation Mapping with broad and narrow band filters, we determine the size of the broad-line emitting region by measuring the time delay between the variability of the continuum and the Hα\alpha emission line. The Hα\alpha emission line responds to blue continuum variations with an average rest frame lag of 19.0±1.2319.0 \pm 1.23 days. Using single epoch spectroscopy we determined a broad-line Hα\alpha velocity width of 1020 km s1^{-1} and in combination with the rest frame lag and adoption a geometric scaling factor f=5.5f = 5.5, we calculate a black hole mass of MBH17×106MM_{BH} \sim 17 \times 10^{6} M_{\odot}. Using the flux variation gradient method, we separate the host galaxy contribution from that of the AGN to calculate the rest frame 5100\AA~ luminosity at the time of our monitoring campaign. The rest frame lag and the host-subtracted luminosity permit us to derive the position of PGC50427 in the BLR size -- AGN luminosity diagram, which is remarkably close to the theoretically expected relation of RL0.5R \propto L^{0.5}. The simultaneous optical and NIR (JJ and KsK_{s}) observations allow us to determine the size of the dust torus through the use of dust reverberation mapping method. We find that the hot dust emission (1800K\sim 1800K) lags the optical variations with an average rest frame lag of 46.2±2.6046.2 \pm 2.60 days. The dust reverberation radius and the nuclear NIR luminosity permit us to derive the position of PGC50427 on the known τMV\tau - M{V} diagram. The simultaneus observations for the broad-line region and dust thermal emission demonstrate that the innermost dust torus is located outside the BLR in PGC50427, supporting the unified scheme for AGNs.     Leptogenesis in the type III seesaw mechanism

    It is shown that the type III seesaw mechanism proposed recently can have certain advantages over the conventional (or type I) seesaw mechanism for leptogenesis. In particular a resonant enhancement of leptogenesis via heavy quasi-Dirac right-handed neutrino pairs can occur without a special flavor form or "texture" of the mass matrices being assumed.
