An animal model of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder: Trace conditioning as a window to inform memory deficits and intervention tactics
Animal models of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) afford the unique capacity to precisely control timing of alcohol exposure and alcohol exposure amounts in the developing animal. These models have powerfully informed neurophysiological alterations associated with fetal and perinatal alcohol. In two experiments presented here we expand use of the Pavlovian Trace Conditioning procedure to examine cognitive deficits and intervention strategies in a rat model of FASD. Rat pups were exposed to 5 g/kg/day ethanol on postnatal days (PD) 4-9, simulating alcohol exposure in the third trimester in humans. During early adolescence, approximately PD 30, the rats were trained in the trace conditioning task in which a light conditioned stimulus (CS) and shock unconditioned stimulus (US) were paired but separated by a 10-s stimulus free trace interval. Learning was assessed in freezing behavior during shock-free tests. Experiment 1 revealed that neonatal ethanol exposure significantly impaired hippocampus-dependent trace conditioning relative to controls. In Experiment 2 a serial compound conditioning procedure known as \u27gap filling\u27 completely reversed the ethanol-induced deficit in trace conditioning. We also discuss prior data regarding the beneficial effects of supplemental choline and novel preliminary data regarding the pharmacological cognitive enhancer physostigmine, both of which mitigate the alcohol-induced cognitive deficit otherwise seen in trace conditioning controls. We suggest trace conditioning as a useful tool for characterizing some of the core cognitive deficits seen in FASD, and as a model for developing effective environmental as well as nutritional and pharmacological interventions. Adolescent and adult rats differ in the amnesic effects of acute ethanol in two hippocampus-dependent tasks: Trace and contextual fear conditioning
Experience-produced deficits in trace conditioning and context conditioning have been useful tools for examining the role of the hippocampus in learning. It has also been suggested that learning in these tasks is especially vulnerable to neurotoxic effects of alcohol during key developmental periods such as adolescence. In five experiments we systematically examined the presence and source of age-dependent vulnerability to the memory-disrupting effects of acute ethanol in trace conditioning and contextual fear conditioning. In Experiment la pre-training ethanol disrupted trace conditioning more strongly in adolescent (postnatal day, PD30-35) than adult rats (PD65-75). In Experiment 1b when pre-training ethanol was accompanied by pre-test ethanol no deficit in trace conditioning was observed in adolescents, suggesting that state-dependent retrieval failure mediated ethanol\u27s disruption of trace conditioning at this age. Experiment 2a and b examined the effect of ethanol pretreatment on context conditioning. Here, adult but not adolescent rats were impaired in conditioned freezing to context cues. Experiment 2c explored state-dependency of this effect. Pre-training ethanol continued to disrupt context conditioning in adults even when ethanol was also administered prior to test. Collectively these findings reveal clear age-dependent and task-dependent vulnerabilities in ethanol\u27s disruptive effects on hippocampus-dependent memory. Adolescents were more disrupted by ethanol in trace conditioning than adults, and adults were more disrupted by ethanol in context conditioning than adolescents. We suggest that adolescents may be more susceptible to changes in internal state (state-dependent retrieval failure) than adults and that ethanol disrupted performance in trace and context conditioning through different mechanisms. Structural and electronic properties of Al nanowires: an ab initio pseudopotential study
The stability and electronic structure of a single monatomic Al wire has been
studied using the ab initio pseudopotential method. The Al wire undergoes two
structural rearrangements under compression, i.e., zigzag configurations at
angles of and . The evolution of electronic structures of the Al
chain as a function of structural phase transition has been investigated. The
relationship between electronic structure and geometric stability is also
discussed. The 2p bands in the Al nanowire are shown to play a critical role in
its stability. The effects of density functionals (GGA and LDA) on cohesive
energy and bond length of Al nanostructures (dimmer, chains, and monolayers)
are also examined. The link between low dimensional 0D structure (dimmer) to
high dimensional 3D bulk Al is estimated. An example of optimized tip-suspended
finite atomic chain is presented to bridge the gap between hypothetical
infinite chains and experimental finite chains.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
Liver Cirrhosis: A Seven Year Follow-Up
The status of 121 patients who were found to have liver cirrhosis on liver biopsy in 1981 was assessed seven years later. The etiology of the cirrhosis was alcoholic in 52%, cryptogenic in 29.8%, hepatitis B-related in 9.1% and miscellaneous in 9.1%. In 1981, jaundice was present in 55 patients (45.8%), ascites in 52 (43%), gastrointestinal bleeding in 25 (20.7%) and encephalopathy in 10 (8.3%). During the following seven years an additional 20 patients developed ascites, 15 gastrointestinal bleeding, 32 encephalopathy and three hepatocellular carcinoma. The mortality race was 43.8% at five years and 53.7% at seven years. The principal cause of death was liver failure (40%), followed by nonliver causes (32.3%) and gastrointestinal bleeding (13.9%). One patient died of hepatocellular carcinoma. Patients who survived seven years had fewer complications when seen in 1981 than those who died during this period (P<0.025). It is concluded that, in Toronto, cirrhosis is often caused by ethanol abuse and hepatitis B infection; that it is associated with significant morbidity and mortality; and that the number of complications when the patient is first seen may be a useful indicator of prognosis. Since many cases of cirrhosis are preventable, the authors suggest that efforts directed towards prevention of cirrhosis may be more rewarding than those directed towards therapy
PURIFIED PROTEIN DERIVATIVE OF TUBERCULIN INDUCES IMMUNOGLOBULIN PRODUCTION IN NORMAL MOUSE SPLEEN CELLS
Purified protein derivative (PPD) tuberculin induced immunoglobulin production in cultures of nonimmune mouse spleen cells, as measured by plaque-forming cells (PFC) against sheep erythrocytes (SRBC), horse erythrocytes, and 4-hydroxy-3,5-dinitrophenacetyl-SRBC. The increase started between 15 and 20 h of culture and reached a peak at 48–72 h. Higher PPD concentrations resulted in earlier peak responses than low concentrations. The Ig produced was mainly 19S and of very low avidity. The response elicited by PPD was of the same type as that caused by lipopolysaccharide of bacterial origin. Mitomycin treatment of cells before culture did not change the numbers of PFC/106 recovered cells but the cell recovery was considerably lower. Also injection of PPD in vivo resulted in increased numbers of PFC. On the basis of these results it is suggested that PPD nonspecifically activates a majority of the B cell population to proliferation and immunoglobulin synthesis
What is eHealth (6)? Development of a Conceptual Model for eHealth: Qualitative Study with Key Informants

BACKGROUND: Despite rapid growth in eHealth research, there remains a lack of consistency in defining and using terms related to eHealth. More widely cited definitions provide broad understanding of eHealth but lack sufficient conceptual clarity to operationalize eHealth and enable its implementation in health care practice, research, education, and policy. Definitions that are more detailed are often context or discipline specific, limiting ease of translation of these definitions across the breadth of eHealth perspectives and situations. A conceptual model of eHealth that adequately captures its complexity and potential overlaps is required. This model must also be sufficiently detailed to enable eHealth operationalization and hypothesis testing.OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop a conceptual practice-based model of eHealth to support health professionals in applying eHealth to their particular professional or discipline contexts.METHODS: We conducted semistructured interviews with key informants (N=25) from organizations involved in health care delivery, research, education, practice, governance, and policy to explore their perspectives on and experiences with eHealth. We used purposeful sampling for maximum diversity. Interviews were coded and thematically analyzed for emergent domains.RESULTS: Thematic analyses revealed 3 prominent but overlapping domains of eHealth: (1) health in our hands (using eHealth technologies to monitor, track, and inform health), (2) interacting for health (using digital technologies to enable health communication among practitioners and between health professionals and clients or patients), and (3) data enabling health (collecting, managing, and using health data). These domains formed a model of eHealth that addresses the need for clear definitions and a taxonomy of eHealth while acknowledging the fluidity of this area and the strengths of initiatives that span multiple eHealth domains.CONCLUSIONS: This model extends current understanding of eHealth by providing clearly defined domains of eHealth while highlighting the benefits of using digital technologies in ways that cross several domains. It provides the depth of perspectives and examples of eHealth use that are lacking in previous research. On the basis of this model, we suggest that eHealth initiatives that are most impactful would include elements from all 3 domains

interaction Hamiltonian of the electric dipole of a two level atom with an
electromagnetic field leads to significant modification of the splitting of an
atomic beam known as Optical Stern Gerlach Effect which now acquires a fine
