North Sea Catch Statistics, 1924-1981
This dataset comprises 8,842 records that have been extracted from the Sea Fisheries Statistical Tables â the official government record of fish landings at ports in England and Wales. The records concern the landings of British first class fishing vessels from Region IV (North Sea) during the period 1924-1981 (exclusive of 1939-1946)

Collocating Interface Objects: Zooming into Maps
May, Dean and Barnard [10] used a theoretically based model to argue that objects in a wide range of interfaces should be collocated following screen changes such as a zoom-in to detail. Many existing online maps do not follow this principle, but move a clicked point to the centre of the subsequent display, leaving the user looking at an unrelated location. This paper presents three experiments showing that collocating the point clicked on a map so that the detailed location appears in the place previously occupied by the overview location makes the map easier to use, reducing eye movements and interaction duration. We discuss the benefit of basing design principles on theoretical models so that they can be applied to novel situations, and so designers can infer when to use and not use them
Systems, interactions and macrotheory
A significant proportion of early HCI research was guided by one very clear vision: that the existing theory base in psychology and cognitive science could be developed to yield engineering tools for use in the interdisciplinary context of HCI design. While interface technologies and heuristic methods for behavioral evaluation have rapidly advanced in both capability and breadth of application, progress toward deeper theory has been modest, and some now believe it to be unnecessary. A case is presented for developing new forms of theory, based around generic âsystems of interactors.â An overlapping, layered structure of macro- and microtheories could then serve an explanatory role, and could also bind together contributions from the different disciplines. Novel routes to formalizing and applying such theories provide a host of interesting and tractable problems for future basic research in HCI
Supplanting the Wrong with the Right: A Synoptic Overview of Christian and Islamic Reactions Towards the Subject of Heresy
Whenever there is a faith that is claiming to be the âone true religion,â just what is it that defines that most sinister of opposition known as âheresy?â Is it the choices made by these aforementioned âhereticsâ to hold beliefs that are contrary to the mainstream? Or is the way in which âorthodoxâ authorities have historically asserted their own superiority while legally eliminating the competition? When overlooking monotheistic belief systems that claim universal theological authority, such as Christianity and Islam, what stands out the most is the fact that the greatest threat almost always comes not from exterior rivals, but from interior division. Consequently, it has always been the task of the âorthodoxyâ to observe, counteract, and stamp out those dangerous views perceived as âhereticalâ lest they ever challenge the mainstream or misguide otherwise devout worshipers. To provide greater insight into the motivations and strategies for such counteractions this study shall analyze the means that orthodox authorities within Christianity and Islam have identified and reacted against âhereticalâ views within their respective religious traditions. Through analyzing various primary sources within both belief systems, be they canonical or âheretical,â I intend to make the argument that the âheresiesâ which early Christians and Muslims sought to oppose were no more set in stone than the âorthodoxyâ that sought to uproot and categorize them. Quite the contrary, both categories are not only incredibly fluid in their nature, but have historically been shown to be in some degree of synchronization with one another
A conceptual framework to explore the roles and contributions of Industrial Psychologists in South Africa (Part 1).
This study was aimed at developing a conceptual framework against which the roles and contributions of industrial psychologists in South Africa could be explored. Three widely-used business frameworks â Balanced Score Card, South African Excellence Model and King II Report on Corporate Governance for South Africa â were theoretically integrated to produce a multi-dimensional framework to clarify roles and contributions in a discourse familiar to the business community. The framework was subsequently utilised in a follow-up study involving 23 registered industrial psychologists who were asked to clarify specific roles and contributions within each of the dimensions of the framework

LANDSAT TM image data quality analysis for energy-related applications
This project represents a no-cost agreement between National Aeronautic Space Administration Goddard Space Flight Center (NASA GSFC) and the Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL). PNL is a Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratory operted by Battelle Memorial Institute at its Pacific Northwest Laboratories in Richland, Washington. The objective of this investigation is to evaluate LANDSAT's thematic mapper (TM) data quality and utility characteristics from an energy research and technological perspective. Of main interest is the extent to which repetitive TM data might support DOE efforts relating to siting, developing, and monitoring energy-related facilities, and to basic geoscientific research. The investigation utilizes existing staff and facility capabilities, and ongoing programmatic activities at PNL and other DOE national laboratories to cooperatively assess the potential usefulness of the improved experimental TM data. The investigation involves: (1) both LANDSAT 4 and 5 TM data, (2) qualitative and quantitative use consideration, and 3) NASA P (corrected) and A (uncorrected) CCT analysis for a variety of sites of DOE interest. Initial results were presented at the LANDSAT Investigator's Workshops and at specialized LANDSAT TM sessions at various conferences
Developing effective therapeutic relationships with children, young people and their families
It is imperative that nurses caring for children, young people and their families develop and maintain effective,
trusting and collaborative therapeutic relationships that sit within the scope of professional boundaries. This
relationship is the nurseâs responsibility and should be positive and mutually acceptable to all stakeholders.
A unique challenge for childrenâs nurses is to address and prioritise the childâs care needs, while meeting the
needs of, and empowering, the family. The 6Cs â care, compassion, competence, communication, courage,
commitment â should underpin care and enable nurses to overcome challenges such as time pressures, acute
situations or disturbed family expectation. Confidentiality and safeguarding should always be observed
