    Discovery of disc precession in the M31 dipping X-ray binary Bo 158

    We present results from three XMM-Newton observations of the M31 low mass X-ray binary XMMU J004314.4+410726.3 (Bo 158), spaced over 3 days in 2004, July. Bo 158 was the first dipping LMXB to be discovered in M31. Periodic intensity dips were previously seen to occur on a 2.78-hr period, due to absorption in material that is raised out of the plane of the accretion disc. The report of these observations stated that the dip depth was anti-correlated with source intensity. However, our new observations do not favour a strict intensity dependance, but rather suggest that the dip variation is due to precession of the accretion disc. This is to be expected in LMXBs with a mass ratio <~ 0.3 (period <~ 4 hr), as the disc reaches the 3:1 resonance with the binary companion, causing elongation and precession of the disc. A smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulation of the disc in this system shows retrograde rotation of a disc warp on a period of ~11 P_orb, and prograde disc precession on a period of ~29 P_orb. This is consistent with the observed variation in the depth of the dips. We find that the dipping behaviour is most likely to be modified by the disc precession, hence we predict that the dipping behaviour repeats on a 81+/-3 hr cycle.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication by MNRAS, changed conten

    Submerged in the mainstream? A case study of an immigrant learner in a New Zealand primary classroom

    Immigrant children from diverse language backgrounds face not only linguistic challenges when enrolled in mainstream English-medium classrooms, but also difficulties adjusting to an unfamiliar learning community. The culture of primary school classrooms in New Zealand typically reflects conventions across three dimensions: interactional, instructional task performance and cognitive-academic development. All three dimensions are underpinned by the culturally specific discourse conventions involved in language socialisation. New learners may be helped by classmates or their teacher to understand and successfully use these conventions, but left on their own they may sink rather than swim. This is a case study of one Taiwanese 11-year old boy, 'John', who entered a New Zealand primary classroom midway through the school year. John's basic conversational ability was sound, but he did not possess the interactive classroom skills needed to operate in the new culture of learning. Selected from a wider study of the classroom, transcript data from audio-recorded excerpts of John's interactions over several months with his teacher and classmates are interpreted from perspectives derived from sociocultural and language socialisation theories. The article concludes with a brief consideration of the extent to which John constructed, or was constrained from constructing meaningful learning experiences, and suggestions for further research and reflection

    Interplay of Peltier and Seebeck effects in nanoscale nonlocal spin valves

    We have experimentally studied the role of thermoelectric effects in nanoscale nonlocal spin valve devices. A finite element thermoelectric model is developed to calculate the generated Seebeck voltages due to Peltier and Joule heating in the devices. By measuring the first, second and third harmonic voltage response non locally, the model is experimentally examined. The results indicate that the combination of Peltier and Seebeck effects contributes significantly to the nonlocal baseline resistance. Moreover, we found that the second and third harmonic response signals can be attributed to Joule heating and temperature dependencies of both Seebeck coefficient and resistivity.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Structural variations in metal complexes of a tertiary α-hydroxyoxime

    Despite the long term interest in hydroxyoximes as metal ion extractants, there is a lack of information on the possible coordination modes these ligands can assume, particularly in concert with a co-ligand. This is pertinent to the use of these extractants in synergistic systems, where a combination of extractants can achieve commercially useful results. We report here the structures of some metal complexes (M = Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn) with (1-hydroxycyclohexyl)-phenyl ketone oxime. The results demonstrate that this ligand can support complexes ranging from mononuclear to trinuclear, in association with anionic and neutral co-ligands in some cases. While these results have been obtained in the solid state, they illustrate a range of possible species that may be formed in extractant solutions

    An understanding of rate dependency over a wide range of time scales is vitally important in approximating the transient response of critical components operating in extreme environments. Many examples of viscoplastic model formulations can be found in the literature, wherein all rate dependency is assumed to occur after yielding. Such models neglect any viscous effects during elastic deformation. In the present work, a unified viscoelastic – viscoplastic material model is developed for the Nickel superalloy RR1000. Particular emphasis is placed on model parameter determination, which is accomplished using standard cyclic plasticity and stress relaxation experimental data

    From vocational training to education: the development of a no-frontiers education policy for Europe?

    This article focuses on developments towards an EU educational policy. Education was not included as one of the Community competencies in the Treaty of Rome. The first half of the article analyses the way that the European Court of Justice and the Commission of the European Communities between them managed to develop a series of substantial Community programmes out of Article 128 on vocational training. The second half of the article discusses educational developments in the community following the Treaty on European Union and the Treaty of Amsterdam. Whilst the legal competence of the community now includes education, the author's argument is that the inclusion of an educational competence will not result in further developments to mirror those in the years before the Treaty on Europe</p

    Discovery and modelling of disc precession in the M31 X-ray binary Bo 158?

    The low mass X-ray binary (LMXB) associated with the M31 globular cluster Bo 158 is known to exhibit intensity dips on a ~2.78 hr period. This is due to obscuration of the X-ray source on the orbital period by material on the outer edge of the accretion disc. However, the depth of dipping varied from <10% to \~83% in three archival XMM-Newton observations of Bo 158. Previous work suggested that the dip depth was anticorrelated with the X-ray luminosity. However, we present results from three new XMM-Newton observations that suggest that the evolution of dipping is instead due to precession of the accretion disc. Such precession is expected in neutron star LMXBs with mass ratios <0.3 (i.e. with orbital periods <4 hr), such as the Galactic dipping LMXB 4U 1916-053. We simulated the accretion disc of Bo 158 using cutting-edge 3D smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH), and using the observed parameters. Our results show disc variability on two time-scales. The disc precesses in a prograde direction on a period of 81+/-3 hr. Also, a radiatively-driven disc warp is present in the inner disc, which undergoes retrograde precesson on a \~31 hr period. From the system geometry, we conclude that the dipping evolution is driven by the disc precession.     Infrastructure-Assisted Message Dissemination for Supporting Heterogeneous Driving Patterns

    With the advances of Internet of Things technologies, individual vehicles can now exchange information to improve traffic safety, and some vehicles can further improve safety and efficiency by coordinating their mobility via cooperative driving. To facilitate these applications, many studies have been focused on the design of inter-vehicle message dissemination protocols. However, most existing designs either assume individual driving pattern or consider cooperative driving only. Moreover, few of them fully exploit infrastructures, such as cameras, sensors, and road-side units. In this paper, we address the design of message dissemination that supports heterogeneous driving patterns. Specifically, we first propose an infrastructure-assisted message dissemination framework that can utilize the capability of infrastructures. We then present a novel beacon scheduling algorithm that aims at guaranteeing the timely and reliable delivery of both periodic beacon messages for cooperative driving and event-triggered safety messages for individual driving. To evaluate the performance of the protocol, we develop both theoretical analysis and simulation experiments. Extensive numerical results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed protocol
