    Possible detection of singly-ionized oxygen in the Type Ia SN 2010kg

    We present direct spectroscopic modeling of 11 high-S/N observed spectra of the Type Ia SN 2010kg, taken between -10 and +5 days with respect to B-maximum. The synthetic spectra, calculated with the SYN++ code, span the range between 4100 and 8500 \r{A}. Our results are in good agreement with previous findings for other Type Ia SNe. Most of the spectral features are formed at or close to the photosphere, but some ions, like Fe II and Mg II, also form features at ~2000 - 5000 km s−1^{-1} above the photosphere. The well-known high-velocity features of the Ca II IR-triplet as well as Si II λ\lambda6355 are also detected. The single absorption feature at ~4400 \r{A}, which usually has been identified as due to Si III, is poorly fit with Si III in SN 2010kg. We find that the fit can be improved by assuming that this feature is due to either C III or O II, located in the outermost part of the ejecta, ~4000 - 5000 km s−1^{-1} above the photosphere. Since the presence of C III is unlikely, because of the lack of the necessary excitation/ionization conditions in the outer ejecta, we identify this feature as due to O II. The simultaneous presence of O I and O II is in good agreement with the optical depth calculations and the temperature distribution in the ejecta of SN 2010kg. This could be the first identification of singly ionized oxygen in a Type Ia SN atmosphere.Comment: Submitted to MNRA

    Evolutionary trends in the hemoglobins of murine animals

    The evolutionary origin of murine line based on a phylogenetic tree made on sequence data of ∞- and β -hemoglobin chains, followed by the diversity spectrum of hemoglobin genes in two wild species of murine rodents: Rattus rattus rufescens (house rat) and Bandicota indica (bandicoot rat) has been reported. Each house rat contains six hemoglobin types involving two infinity-and three β-chains, which suggests a probable gene duplication at the oc chain locus and a gene triplication at the β-chain locus. Each bandicoot rat contains one infinity-and two β -chains suggesting a probable gene duplication at the β-chain locus. Peptide pattern analysis of the polypeptide chains of these murine hemoglobins further indicates that intraspecies differences among duplicated chains of the same kind are less than interspecies differences among corresponding ∞-and β -chains

    Synthesis And Characterization And Performance Evaluation Of Poly (Ester Amide) Urethane Derived From Thevetia Nerrifolia Seed Oil From Nigeria

    Thevetia nerrifolia seed oil was extracted from the seed-bearing oil using hot extraction method involving the use of Soxhlet apparatus. The oil was characterized for physicochemical properties which include; specific gravity, refractive index, acid value, iodine value, and saponification value respectively. N, N-bis (2-hydroxyl ethyl) Fatty amide was obtained from the oil by reacting the oil with diethanolamine at 120oC, which was then reacted with phthalic anhydride at 140-150oC to give poly (ester amide). The poly (ester amide) was modified by reacting with 2, 4-diisocyanate under N2 atmosphere at 120oC to give poly (ester amide) urethane. Physicochemical characterization was carried out on both fatty amides, the unmodified and modified poly (ester amide). The film properties and chemical resistance were carried out on both the unmodified and urethane modified poly (ester amide). FTIR and TGA analysis were also carried out on the unmodified and the modified poly (ester amide). Findings revealed that the oil is semi-drying; suitable for surface coatings and that the performances of the poly (ester amide) were enhanced in terms of chemical resistance, film properties and thermal stability upon modification with a diisocyanate

    Design and evaluation of sustained release matrix tablets of levofloxacin for effective treatment of microbial infections

    The objective of present work was to formulate and evaluate sustained release matrix tablets of levofloxacin for treating microbial infections effectively. Levofloxacin is the active component of the racemate ofloxacin, and used for treating a variety of clinical conditions such as lower respiratory tract infections, acute sinusitis, uncomplicated skin and soft-tissue infections and complicated urinary tract infections. Different formulations were prepared by wet granulation method using various release rate controlling hydrophilic polymers. The formulations were evaluated for hardness, weight variation, friability and drug content uniformity. The in vitro release of drug from the formulations was studied in pH 1.2 acidic buffer and pH 6.8 phosphate buffer, and it was found that the prepared tablets were able to sustain the release of the drug. The release of levofloxacin from the tablets was diffusion controlled and the release mechanism was non-Fickian. For conclusion, the developed formulations may reduce the dosing intervals, reduce the dose related side effects and increase the drug’s efficacy for treating infections.Keywords: Matrix tablets, levofloxacin, HPMC, guar gum, xantham gum, locust bean gum, Amorphophallus starch

    High-Velocity Features of Calcium and Silicon in the Spectra of Type Ia Supernovae

    "High-velocity features" (HVFs) are spectral features in Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) that have minima indicating significantly higher (by greater than about 6000 km/s) velocities than typical "photospheric-velocity features" (PVFs). The PVFs are absorption features with minima indicating typical photospheric (i.e., bulk ejecta) velocities (usually ~9000-15,000 km/s near B-band maximum brightness). In this work we undertake the most in-depth study of HVFs ever performed. The dataset used herein consists of 445 low-resolution optical and near-infrared (NIR) spectra (at epochs up to 5 d past maximum brightness) of 210 low-redshift SNe Ia that follow the "Phillips relation." A series of Gaussian functions is fit to the data in order to characterise possible HVFs of Ca II H&K, Si II {\lambda}6355, and the Ca II NIR triplet. The temporal evolution of the velocities and strengths of the PVFs and HVFs of these three spectral features is investigated, as are possible correlations with other SN Ia observables. We find that while HVFs of Ca II are regularly observed (except in underluminous SNe Ia, where they are never found), HVFs of Si II {\lambda}6355 are significantly rarer, and they tend to exist at the earliest epochs and mostly in objects with large photospheric velocities. It is also shown that stronger HVFs of Si II {\lambda}6355 are found in objects that lack C II absorption at early times and that have red ultraviolet/optical colours near maximum brightness. These results lead to a self-consistent connection between the presence and strength of HVFs of Si II {\lambda}6355 and many other mutually correlated SN~Ia observables, including photospheric velocity.Comment: 48 pages (22 of which are tables), 15 figures, 5 tables, re-submitted to MNRAS (after first referee report

    Strategies for the introduction of human papillomavirus vaccination: modelling the optimum age- and sex-specific pattern of vaccination in Finland

    Phase III trials have demonstrated the efficacy of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines in preventing transient and persistent high-risk (hr) HPV infection and precancerous lesions. A mathematical model of HPV type 16 infection and progression to cervical cancer, parameterised to represent the infection in Finland, was used to explore the optimal age at vaccination and pattern of vaccine introduction. In the long term, the annual proportion of cervical cancer cases prevented is much higher when early adolescents are targeted. Vaccinating against hr HPV generates greater long-term benefits if vaccine is delivered before the age at first sexual intercourse. However, vaccinating 12 year olds delays the predicted decrease in cervical cancer, compared to vaccinating older adolescents or young adults. Vaccinating males as well as females has more impact on the proportion of cases prevented when vaccinating at younger ages. Implementing catch-up vaccination at the start of a vaccination programme would increase the speed with which a decrease in HPV and cervical cancer incidence is observed
