Mid-J CO Emission in Nearby Seyfert Galaxies
We study for the first time the complete sub-millimeter spectra (450 GHz to
1550 GHz) of a sample of nearby active galaxies observed with the SPIRE Fourier
Transform Spectrometer (SPIRE/FTS) onboard Herschel. The CO ladder (from Jup =
4 to 12) is the most prominent spectral feature in this range. These CO lines
probe warm molecular gas that can be heated by ultraviolet photons, shocks, or
X-rays originated in the active galactic nucleus or in young star-forming
regions. In these proceedings we investigate the physical origin of the CO
emission using the averaged CO spectral line energy distribution (SLED) of six
Seyfert galaxies. We use a radiative transfer model assuming an isothermal
homogeneous medium to estimate the molecular gas conditions. We also compare
this CO SLED with the predictions of photon and X-ray dominated region (PDR and

Existence of a Meromorphic Extension of Spectral Zeta Functions on Fractals
We investigate the existence of the meromorphic extension of the spectral
zeta function of the Laplacian on self-similar fractals using the classical
results of Kigami and Lapidus (based on the renewal theory) and new results of
Hambly and Kajino based on the heat kernel estimates and other probabilistic
techniques. We also formulate conjectures which hold true in the examples that
have been analyzed in the existing literature
Automatic conditioning of the LHC injection kickers
The LHC injection systems, located near the interaction regions 2 and 8, comprise 4 fast pulsed kicker magnets (MKI) per ring to bring the beam onto the orbit. Each magnet is housed in a separate vacuum tank. Their nominal operating voltage is 54 kV, and the nominal pulse length 7.86 µs. To prepare these magnets for operation they are once assembled and baked out, gradually subjected to higher and higher voltages and greater pulse lengths, until their voltage holding capability is sufficiently beyond the nominal operating conditions. In the past this "conditioning" was carried out manually, and thus a manpower-intensive, and also technically not optimal procedure. To overcome these drawbacks a program has been developed, running in a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), which has been used to condition the full suite of LHC injection kickers automatically
Hubble Space Telescope Images of Magellanic Cloud Planetary Nebulae: Data and Correlations across Morphological Classes
The morphology of planetary nebulae (PNe) provides an essential tool for
understanding their origin and evolution, as it reflects both the dynamics of
the gas ejected during the TP-AGB phase, and the central star energetics. Here
we study the morphology of 27 Magellanic Cloud planetary nebulae (MCPNe) and
present an analysis of their physical characteristics across morphological
classes. Similar studies have been successfully carried out for galactic PNe,
but were compromised by the uncertainty of individual PN distances. We present
our own HST/FOC images of 15 Magellanic Cloud PNe (MCPNe) acquired through a
narrow-band lambda 5007 [O III] filter. We use the Richardson-Lucy
deconvolution technique on these pre-COSTAR images to achieve post-COSTAR
quality. Three PNe imaged before and after COSTAR confirm the high reliability
of our deconvolution procedure. We derive morphological classes, dimensions,
and surface photometry for all these PNe. We have combined this sample with
HST/PC1 images of 15 MCPNe, three of which are in common with the FOC set,
acquired by Dopita et al. (1996), to obtain the largest MCPN sample ever
examined from the morphological viewpoint. By using the whole database,
supplemented with published data from the literature, we have analyzed the
properties of the MCPNe and compared them to a typical, complete galactic
sample. Morphology of the MCPNe is then correlated with PN density, chemistry,

The enigmatic nature of the circumstellar envelope and bow shock surrounding Betelgeuse as revealed by Herschel. I. Evidence of clumps, multiple arcs, and a linear bar-like structure
Context. The interaction between stellar winds and the interstellar medium
(ISM) can create complex bow shocks. The photometers on board the Herschel
Space Observatory are ideally suited to studying the morphologies of these bow
shocks. Aims. We aim to study the circumstellar environment and wind-ISM
interaction of the nearest red supergiant, Betelgeuse. Methods. Herschel PACS
images at 70, 100, and 160 micron and SPIRE images at 250, 350, and 500 micron
were obtained by scanning the region around Betelgeuse. These data were
complemented with ultraviolet GALEX data, near-infrared WISE data, and radio 21
cm GALFA-HI data. The observational properties of the bow shock structure were
deduced from the data and compared with hydrodynamical simulations. Results.
The infrared Herschel images of the environment around Betelgeuse are
spectacular, showing the occurrence of multiple arcs at 6-7 arcmin from the
central target and the presence of a linear bar at 9 arcmin. Remarkably, no
large-scale instabilities are seen in the outer arcs and linear bar. The dust
temperature in the outer arcs varies between 40 and 140 K, with the linear bar
having the same colour temperature as the arcs. The inner envelope shows clear
evidence of a non-homogeneous clumpy structure (beyond 15 arcsec), probably
related to the giant convection cells of the outer atmosphere. The
non-homogeneous distribution of the material even persists until the collision
with the ISM. A strong variation in brightness of the inner clumps at a radius
of 2 arcmin suggests a drastic change in mean gas and dust density some 32 000
yr ago. Using hydrodynamical simulations, we try to explain the observed

From non-symmetric particle systems to non-linear PDEs on fractals
We present new results and challenges in obtaining hydrodynamic limits for
non-symmetric (weakly asymmetric) particle systems (exclusion processes on
pre-fractal graphs) converging to a non-linear heat equation. We discuss a
joint density-current law of large numbers and a corresponding large deviations

Acceleration and Substructure Constraints in a Quasar Outflow
We present observations of probable line-of-sight acceleration of a broad
absorption trough of C IV in the quasar SDSS J024221.87+004912.6. We also
discuss how the velocity overlap of two other outflowing systems in the same
object constrains the properties of the outflows. The Si IV doublet in each
system has one unblended transition and one transition which overlaps with
absorption from the other system. The residual flux in the overlapping trough
is well fit by the product of the residual fluxes in the unblended troughs. For
these optically thick systems to yield such a result, at least one of them must
consist of individual subunits rather than being a single structure with
velocity-dependent coverage of the source. If these subunits are identical,
opaque, spherical clouds, we estimate the cloud radius to be r = 3.9 10^15 cm.
If they are identical, opaque, linear filaments, we estimate their width to be
w = 6.5 10^14 cm. These subunits are observed to cover the Mg II broad emission
line region of the quasar, at which distance from the black hole the above
filament width is equal to the predicted scale height of the outer atmosphere
of a thin accretion disk. Insofar as that scale height is a natural size scale
for structures originating in an accretion disk, these observations are
evidence that the accretion disk can be a source of quasar absorption systems.

Optimization-based controller design for rotorcraft
An optimization-based methodology for linear control system design is outlined by considering the design of a controller for a UH-60 rotorcraft in hover. A wide range of design specifications is taken into account: internal stability, decoupling between longitudinal and lateral motions, handling qualities, and rejection of windgusts. These specifications are investigated while taking into account physical limitations in the swashplate displacements and rates of displacement. The methodology crucially relies on user-machine interaction for tradeoff exploration
First release of the IPHAS catalogue of new extended planetary nebulae
Date of Acceptance: 30/06/2014We present the first results of our search for new, extended planetary nebulae (PNe) based on careful, systematic, visual scrutiny of the imaging data from the Isaac Newton Telescope Photometric Ha Survey of the Northern Galactic plane (IPHAS). The newly uncovered PNe will help to improve the census of this important population of Galactic objects that serve as key windows into the late-stage evolution of low- to intermediate-mass stars. They will also facilitate study of the faint end of the ensemble Galactic PN luminosity function. The sensitivity and coverage of IPHAS allows PNe to be found in regions of greater extinction in the Galactic plane and/or those PNe in a more advanced evolutionary state and at larger distances compared to the general Galactic PN population. Using a set of newly revised optical diagnostic diagrams in combination with access to a powerful, new, multiwavelength imaging data base, we have identified 159 true, likely and possible PNe for this first catalogue release. The ability of IPHAS to unveil PNe at low Galactic latitudes and towards the Galactic Anticentre, compared to previous surveys, makes this survey an ideal tool to contribute to the improvement of our knowledge of the whole Galactic PN population.Peer reviewe
