Skycorr: A general tool for spectroscopic sky subtraction
Airglow emission lines, which dominate the optical-to-near-IR sky radiation,
show strong, line-dependent variability on various time scales. Therefore, the
subtraction of the sky background in the affected wavelength regime becomes a
problem if plain sky spectra have to be taken at a different time as the
astronomical data. A solution of this issue is the physically motivated scaling
of the airglow lines in the plain sky data to fit the sky lines in the object
spectrum. We have developed a corresponding instrument-independent approach
based on one-dimensional spectra. Our code skycorr separates sky lines and
sky/object continuum by an iterative approach involving a line finder and
airglow line data. The sky lines are grouped according to their expected
variability. The line groups in the sky data are then scaled to fit the sky in
the science data. Required pixel-specific weights for overlapping groups are
taken from a comprehensive airglow model. Deviations in the wavelength
calibration are corrected by fitting Chebyshev polynomials and rebinning via
asymmetric damped sinc kernels. The scaled sky lines and the sky continuum are
subtracted separately. VLT X-Shooter data covering time intervals from two
minutes to about one year were selected to illustrate the performance. Except
for short time intervals of a few minutes, the sky line residuals were several
times weaker than for sky subtraction without fitting. Further tests show that
skycorr performs consistently better than the method of Davies (2007) developed

This is a compilation of 30 research trial reports from four land-grant universities in the Midwestern United States. Crops include cantaloupe, pickling cucumber, pepper, potato, pumpkin, summer squash and zucchini, sweet corn, tomato, and watermelon. Somecrops were evaluated in high tunnels or hoophouses. Most trials evaluated different cultivars or varieties. One report addressed plant spacing for sweet corn and one addressed soil block for production of tomato seedlings. A list of vegetable seed sources and a list of other online sources of vegetable trial reports are also included

Galaxy Groups in the SDSS DR4: I. The Catalogue and Basic Properties
We use a modified version of the halo-based group finder developed by Yang et
al. to select galaxy groups from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS DR4). In
the first step, a combination of two methods is used to identify the centers of
potential groups and to estimate their characteristic luminosity. Using an
iterative approach, the adaptive group finder then uses the average
mass-to-light ratios of groups, obtained from the previous iteration, to assign
a tentative mass to each group. This mass is then used to estimate the size and
velocity dispersion of the underlying halo that hosts the group, which in turn
is used to determine group membership in redshift space. Finally, each
individual group is assigned two different halo masses: one based on its
characteristic luminosity, and the other based on its characteristic stellar
mass. Applying the group finder to the SDSS DR4, we obtain 301237 groups in a
broad dynamic range, including systems of isolated galaxies. We use detailed
mock galaxy catalogues constructed for the SDSS DR4 to test the performance of
our group finder in terms of completeness of true members, contamination by
interlopers, and accuracy of the assigned masses. This paper is the first in a
series and focuses on the selection procedure, tests of the reliability of the
group finder, and the basic properties of the group catalogue (e.g. the
mass-to-light ratios, the halo mass to stellar mass ratios, etc.). The group

Investigating the Filled Gel Model in Cheddar Cheese Through Use of Sephadex Beads
Cheese can be modeled as a filled gel whereby milkfat globules are dispersed in a casein gel network. We determined the filler effects using Sephadex beads (GE Healthcare Life Sciences, Pittsburgh, PA) as a model filler particle. Ideally, such a model could be used to test novel filler particles to replace milkfat in low-fat cheese. Low-filler (6% particles), reduced-filler (16%), and full-filler (33%) cheeses were produced using either Sephadex beads of varying sizes (20 to 150 ÎĽm diameter) or milkfat. Small- and large-strain rheological tests were run on each treatment at 8, 12, and 18 wk after cheese manufacturing. Differences in rheological properties were caused primarily by the main effects of filler volume and type (milkfat vs. Sephadex), whereas filler size had no obvious effect. All treatments showed a decrease in deformability and an increase in firmness as filler volume increased above 25%, although the beads exhibited a greater reinforcing effect and greater energy recovery than milkfat
Molecfit: A general tool for telluric absorption correction. I. Method and application to ESO instruments
Context: The interaction of the light from astronomical objects with the
constituents of the Earth's atmosphere leads to the formation of telluric
absorption lines in ground-based collected spectra. Correcting for these lines,
mostly affecting the red and infrared region of the spectrum, usually relies on
observations of specific stars obtained close in time and airmass to the
science targets, therefore using precious observing time. Aims: We present
molecfit, a tool for correcting for telluric absorption lines based on
synthetic modelling of the Earth's atmospheric transmission. Molecfit is
versatile and can be used with data obtained with various ground-based
telescopes and instruments. Methods: Molecfit combines a publicly available
radiative transfer code, a molecular line database, atmospheric profiles, and
various kernels to model the instrument line spread function. The atmospheric
profiles are created by merging a standard atmospheric profile representative
of a given observatory's climate, of local meteorological data, and of
dynamically retrieved altitude profiles for temperature, pressure, and
humidity. We discuss the various ingredients of the method, its applicability,
and its limitations. We also show examples of telluric line correction on
spectra obtained with a suite of ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) instruments.
Results: Compared to previous similar tools, molecfit takes the best results
for temperature, pressure, and humidity in the atmosphere above the observatory
into account. As a result, the standard deviation of the residuals after
correction of unsaturated telluric lines is frequently better than 2% of the
continuum. Conclusion: Molecfit is able to accurately model and correct for
telluric lines over a broad range of wavelengths and spectral resolutions.

Oral valdecoxib and injected parecoxib for acute postoperative pain: a quantitative systematic review
BACKGROUND: Clinical trials suggest that cyclo-oxygenase-2 specific inhibitors (coxibs) are an effective treatment for acute postoperative pain. The aims of this systematic review were to examine the evidence for oral valdecoxib and injected parecoxib, and quantify efficacy and adverse effects. METHODS: Information from randomized, double-blind studies in acute postoperative pain was sought. The area under the pain relief versus time curve over four to six hours was dichotomized using validated equations to derive the proportion of patients with treatment and placebo with at least 50% pain relief over four to six hours and calculate the number-needed-to-treat (NNT). Information on duration of analgesia and adverse events was also collected. RESULTS: The NNT for one patient to experience at least 50% relief over six hours following a single oral dose of valdecoxib 20 mg and 40 mg was 1.7 (1.4 to 2.0) and 1.6 (1.4 to 1.8) respectively. The NNT for one patient to have at least 50% relief over four to six hours with parecoxib 20 mg IV and 40 mg IV was 3.0 (2.3 to 4.1) and 2.3 (2.0 to 2.6) respectively. Mean time to remedication (weighted by trial size) was >24 hours with valdecoxib 40 mg, 8.7 hours with parecoxib 40 mg IV and 1.7 to 1.8 hours with placebo. There were no statistical differences between treatment and placebo for any adverse effect. CONCLUSION: Both oral valdecoxib and injected parecoxib are effective treatments for acute postoperative pain
Spin-structures of N-boson systems with nonzero spins - an analytically solvable model with pairing force
A model is proposed to study the possible pairing structures of N-boson
systems with nonzero spin. Analytical solutions have been obtained. The
emphasis is placed on the spin-structures of ground states with attractive or
repulsive pairing force, and with or without the action of a magnetic field. A
quantity (an analogue of the two-body density function) is defined to study the
spin-correlation between two bosons in N-body systems. The excitation of the

Barriers to Accessing Acute Care for Newly Arrived Refugees
Introduction: Over the past decade, the number of refugees arriving in the United States (U.S.) has increased dramatically. Refugees arrive with unmet health needs and may face barriers when seeking care. However, little is known about how refugees perceive and access care when acutely ill. The goal of this study was to understand barriers to access of acute care by newly arrived refugees, and identify potential improvements from refugees and resettlement agencies.Methods: This was an in-depth, qualitative interview study of refugees and employees from refugee resettlement and post-resettlement agencies in a city in the Northeast U.S. Interviews were audiotaped, transcribed, and coded independently by two investigators. Interviews were conducted until thematic saturation was reached. We analyzed transcripts using a modified grounded theory approach.Results: Interviews were completed with 16 refugees and 12 employees from refugee resettlement/post-resettlement agencies. Participants reported several barriers to accessing acute care including challenges understanding the U.S. healthcare system, difficulty scheduling timely outpatient acute care visits, significant language barriers in all acute care settings, and confusion over the intricacies of health insurance. The novelty and complexity of the U.S. healthcare system drives refugees to resettlement agencies for assistance. Resettlement agency employees express concern with directing refugees to appropriate levels of care and report challenges obtaining timely access to sick visits. While receiving emergency department (ED) care, refugees experience communication barriers due to limitations in consistent interpretation services.Conclusion: Refugees face multiple barriers when accessing acute care. Interventions in the ED, outpatient settings, and in resettlement agencies, have the potential to reduce barriers to care. Examples could include interpretation services that allow for clinic phone scheduling and easier access to interpreter services within the ED. Additionally, extending the Refugee Medical Assistance program may limit gaps in insurance coverage and avoid insurance-related barriers to seeking care
