Strings, T-duality breaking, and nonlocality without the shortest distance
T-duality of string theory suggests nonlocality manifested as the shortest
possible distance. As an alternative, we suggest a nonlocal formulation of
string theory that breaks T-duality at the fundamental level and does not
require the shortest possible distance. Instead, the string has an objective
shape in spacetime at all length scales, but different parts of the string
interact in a nonlocal Bohmian manner.Comment: 7 pages, revised, to appear in Eur. Phys. J.
Dirofilaria immitis parasite infection in cats: first case reported in the Legal Amazon region, Brazil - case report
ABSTRACT A case of infection with Dirofilaria immitis in a cat is reported here with clinical signs of apathy, anorexia, dyspnea, polypnea, slight dehydration and pale mucus membranes. The radiographic examination showed cardiomegaly, lobar arteries dilation of the cranial lobes and tortuosity, enlargement of the caudal lobar arteries. In the right lobe of the lung parenchyma, interstitial pulmonary opacification tending to alveolar opacification was seen. The clinical signs, the movements, and the morphology of the microfilariae in the direct examination of fresh blood, peripheral blood smear and Knott’s modified test supported the diagnosis. We alert to the need for clinicians to consider feline heartworm diseases as a differential diagnosis in endemic areas when cats show respiratory signs
Boundary critical behavior at m-axial Lifshitz points for a boundary plane parallel to the modulation axes
The critical behavior of semi-infinite -dimensional systems with
-component order parameter and short-range interactions is
investigated at an -axial bulk Lifshitz point whose wave-vector instability
is isotropic in an -dimensional subspace of . The associated
modulation axes are presumed to be parallel to the surface, where . An appropriate semi-infinite model representing the
corresponding universality classes of surface critical behavior is introduced.
It is shown that the usual O(n) symmetric boundary term
of the Hamiltonian must be supplemented by one of the form involving a
dimensionless (renormalized) coupling constant . The implied boundary
conditions are given, and the general form of the field-theoretic
renormalization of the model below the upper critical dimension
is clarified. Fixed points describing the ordinary, special,
and extraordinary transitions are identified and shown to be located at a
nontrivial value if . The surface
critical exponents of the ordinary transition are determined to second order in
. Extrapolations of these expansions yield values of these
exponents for in good agreement with recent Monte Carlo results for the
case of a uniaxial () Lifshitz point. The scaling dimension of the surface
energy density is shown to be given exactly by , where
is the anisotropy exponent.Comment: revtex4, 31 pages with eps-files for figures, uses texdraw to

Entangled-Photon Generation from Parametric Down-Conversion in Media with Inhomogeneous Nonlinearity
We develop and experimentally verify a theory of Type-II spontaneous
parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in media with inhomogeneous distributions of
second-order nonlinearity. As a special case, we explore interference effects
from SPDC generated in a cascade of two bulk crystals separated by an air gap.
The polarization quantum-interference pattern is found to vary strongly with
the spacing between the two crystals. This is found to be a cooperative effect
due to two mechanisms: the chromatic dispersion of the medium separating the
crystals and spatiotemporal effects which arise from the inclusion of
transverse wave vectors. These effects provide two concomitant avenues for
controlling the quantum state generated in SPDC. We expect these results to be
of interest for the development of quantum technologies and the generation of
SPDC in periodically varying nonlinear materials.Comment: submitted to Physical Review
