    Measurement of butterfly average resultant impulse per phase

    The aim of this study was to measure the average resultant impulse (ARI) per phase of the stroke cycle in butterfly and to analyse the variability of ARI according to the adopted breathing technique. The sample was composed of 6 male Portuguese swimmers at national and international level. 6 cameras were set, obtaining non coplanar images (2 "dual media" images included). The study comprised the kinematical analysis of stroke cycles of the butterfly stroke using the "Ariel Performance Analysis System" from Ariel Dynamics Inc. and a VCR at a frequency of 50 Hz. The ARI was calculated using the mean horizontal acceleration of the cenler of mass in each phase, the absolute duration of each phase and the body mass of the swimmer. Comparing the ARI according to the breathing technique adopted in each phase of the stroke cycle, we only observed significant differences in the outsweep. Comparing the intra-cyclic variations of the ARI in the different breathing techniques adopted, the arm's recovery when compared with the remained phases presented a significantly lower ARI.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Increasing prevalence of obesity and diabetes among patients evaluated for liver transplantation in a Swiss tertiary referral center: a 10-year retrospective analysis.

    Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is now the first cause of chronic liver disease in developed countries. We aimed to assess trends in the prevalence of obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and NAFLD in patients undergoing liver transplantation evaluation and to assess whether obese patients were less likely to be listed or had an increased drop-out rate after listing. We conducted a retrospective study of all consecutive patients who underwent liver transplantation evaluation at a Swiss tertiary referral centre between January 2009 and March 2020. A total of 242 patients were included, 83% were male. The median age was 59 years (IQR, 51-64 years). The most common causes of end-stage liver disease were viral hepatitis (28%), alcoholic liver disease (21%) and NAFLD (12%). Obesity was present in 28% of our cohort, with a significant increase over time. Prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus followed the same trend (p = 0.02). The proportions of non-listed and listed obese patients did not differ (21% vs. 30% respectively; p = 0.3). The prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus significantly increased over our study period. Obese patients had similar chances of being listed. The landscape of liver transplantation indications is shifting towards NAFLD, highlighting the urgent need to prevent NAFLD progression

    Propolis extract as a feed additive of the Nile tilapia juveniles

    ABSTRACT This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary propolis alcohol extract supplementation on growth performance, digestibility, intestinal morphometry, and physiologic parameters Nile tilápia (Oreochromis niloticus L.) juveniles. For performance experiment and intestinal morphometry, 120 fish averaging 1.41±0.3g were randomly distributed into 24 tanks (70L each) in a closed recirculation water system with constant aeration and biofilter. The animals were distributed into four treatments using a completely randomized design with six replicates per treatment. The treatments consisted of four pellet feeds with different alcohol propolis concentrations extract (AEP) (0.0, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5gkg-1). The performance experiment period was conducted for 45 days. For the digestibility experiment, an inert marker in the feed and the adapted Guelph feces collecting system were used. The results showed no differences in the performance parameters, crude protein apparent digestibility and dry matter of the feeds, intestinal morphometry, and physiologic parameters. However, there was an increasing linear effect on the energy digestibility with increasing PAE concentrations in the fish feed. The usage of the propolis extract supplementation levels of 1% is recommended for optimum effect on villus morphometry in Nile tilapia
