Fronts and frontogenesis as revealed by high time resolution data
Upper air sounding are used to examine a cold front of average intensity. Vertical cross sections of potential temperature and wind, and horizontal analyses were compared and adjusted for consistency. These analyses were then used to study the evolution of the front, found to consist of a complex system of fronts occurring at all levels of the troposphere. Low level fronts were strongest at the surface and rapidly weakened with height. Fronts in the midddle troposphere were much more intense. The warm air ahead of the fronts was nearly barotropic, while the cold air behind was baroclinic through deep layers. A deep mixed layer was observed to grow in this cold air
Optimal Axes of Siberian Snakes for Polarized Proton Acceleration
Accelerating polarized proton beams and storing them for many turns can lead
to a loss of polarization when accelerating through energies where a spin
rotation frequency is in resonance with orbit oscillation frequencies.
First-order resonance effects can be avoided by installing Siberian Snakes in
the ring, devices which rotate the spin by 180 degrees around the snake axis
while not changing the beam's orbit significantly. For large rings, several
Siberian Snakes are required.
Here a criterion will be derived that allows to find an optimal choice of the
snake axes. Rings with super-period four are analyzed in detail, and the HERA
proton ring is used as an example for approximate four-fold symmetry. The
proposed arrangement of Siberian Snakes matches their effects so that all
spin-orbit coupling integrals vanish at all energies and therefore there is no
first-order spin-orbit coupling at all for this choice, which I call snakes
matching. It will be shown that in general at least eight Siberian Snakes are
needed and that there are exactly four possibilities to arrange their axes.
When the betatron phase advance between snakes is chosen suitably, four
Siberian Snakes can be sufficient.
To show that favorable choice of snakes have been found, polarized protons
are tracked for part of HERA-p's acceleration cycle which shows that
polarization is preserved best for the here proposed arrangement of Siberian

Wake vortex technology
A brief overview of the highlights of NASA's wake vortex minimization program is presented. The significant results of this program are summarized as follows: (1) it is technically feasible to reduce significantly the rolling upset created on a trailing aircraft; (2) the basic principles or methods by which reduction in the vortex strength can be achieved have been identified; and (3) an analytical capability for investigating aircraft vortex wakes has been developed
Satellite observations of mesoscale features in lower Cook Inlet and Shelikof Strait, Gulf of Alaska
The Seasat satellite launched in Summer 1978 carried a synthetic aperture radar (SAR). Although Seasat failed after 105 days in orbit, it provided observations that demonstrate the potential to examine and monitor upper oceanic processes. Seasat made five passes over lower Cook Inlet and Shelikof Strait, Alaska, during Summer 1978. SAR images from the passes show oceanographic features, including a meander in a front, a pair of mesoscale eddies, and internal waves. These features are compared with contemporary and representative images from a satellite-borne Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS), with water property data, and with current observations from moored instruments. The results indicate that SAR data can be used to monitor mesoscale oceanographic features
On the finite-size behavior of systems with asymptotically large critical shift
Exact results of the finite-size behavior of the susceptibility in
three-dimensional mean spherical model films under Dirichlet-Dirichlet,
Dirichlet-Neumann and Neumann-Neumann boundary conditions are presented. The
corresponding scaling functions are explicitly derived and their asymptotics
close to, above and below the bulk critical temperature are obtained. The
results can be incorporated in the framework of the finite-size scaling theory
where the exponent characterizing the shift of the finite-size
critical temperature with respect to is smaller than , with
being the critical exponent of the bulk correlation length.Comment: 24 pages, late
Ising metamagnets in thin film geometry: equilibrium properties
Artificial antiferromagnets and synthetic metamagnets have attracted much
attention recently due to their potential for many different applications.
Under some simplifying assumptions these systems can be modeled by thin Ising
metamagnetic films. In this paper we study, using both the Wang/Landau scheme
and importance sampling Monte Carlo simulations, the equilibrium properties of
these films. On the one hand we discuss the microcanonical density of states
and its prominent features. On the other we analyze canonically various global
and layer quantities. We obtain the phase diagram of thin Ising metamagnets as
a function of temperature and external magnetic field. Whereas the phase
diagram of the bulk system only exhibits one phase transition between the
antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases, the phase diagram of thin Ising
metamagnets includes an additional intermediate phase where one of the surface
layers has aligned itself with the direction of the applied magnetic field.
This additional phase transition is discontinuous and ends in a critical end
point. Consequently, it is possible to gradually go from the antiferromagnetic
phase to the intermediate phase without passing through a phase transition.Comment: 8 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review
CFD Model of a Specific Fire Scenario
Flashover is a complex and potentially very dangerous phenomenon. The NSW Fire Brigade currently conducts training courses in flashover and backdraft using a test cell made from a shipping container where chipboard is set alight in the test cell and the fire is allowed to develop into flashover. As part of a collaborative project with the NSWFB, computational models are being developed to aid in the training procedure. CFD models of the test cell in advancing flashover scenarios, using the code FDS are compared with qualitative experimental data, with good agreement shown for the fire behaviour. Models with different configurations of the test cell were also compared, with particular consideration on the effect on time to flashover and temperature trends
Influence of Alternate Host Densities on Brown-Headed Cowbird Parasitism Rates in Black-Capped Vireos
Brown-headed Cowbird (Molothrus ater) parasitism is thought to be partly influenced by density of the host species, although tests of host density are relatively rare. We examined parasitism rates relative to the density of individual host species and densities of coexisting host species. We monitored 392 nests among coexisting host species and measured their densities among six habitats on Fort Hood Military Reservation, Texas during 1991-1992 to test the hypothesis that coexisting species affect parasitism rates in the endangered Black-capped Vireo (Vireo atricapillus). Black-capped Vireos and White-eyed Vireos (V. griseus) suffered three to four times higher cowbird parasitism than Northern Cardinals (Cardinalis cardinalis) or Painted Buntings (Passerina ciris). After controlling for removal of female cowbirds, which has been conducted on the study site since 1988, parasitism rates in Black-capped Vireos were positively correlated with cumulative host density in general, and Northern Cardinal density in particular. Only density of Northern Cardinals explained a significant amount of variation in parasitism rates in Black-capped Vireos among sites. We suggest that cowbirds may be attracted to conspicuous species, such as cardinals, and that high densities of such species may negatively affect coexisting species by increasing probabilities of being parasitized. Vireo nests were characterized by less nest concealment, greater canopy cover, and more stems than other species. However nest site and vegetation characteristics did not differ between parasitized and unparasitized nests for any species, suggesting habitat was unimportant to parasitism
Continuous phase transitions with a convex dip in the microcanonical entropy
The appearance of a convex dip in the microcanonical entropy of finite
systems usually signals a first order transition. However, a convex dip also
shows up in some systems with a continuous transition as for example in the
Baxter-Wu model and in the four-state Potts model in two dimensions. We
demonstrate that the appearance of a convex dip in those cases can be traced
back to a finite-size effect. The properties of the dip are markedly different
from those associated with a first order transition and can be understood
within a microcanonical finite-size scaling theory for continuous phase
transitions. Results obtained from numerical simulations corroborate the

Fault Slip and Exhumation History of the Willard Thrust Sheet, Sevier Fold‐Thrust Belt, Utah: Relations to Wedge Propagation, Hinterland Uplift, and Foreland Basin Sedimentation
Zircon (U‐Th)/He (ZHe) and zircon fission track thermochronometric data for 47 samples spanning the areally extensive Willard thrust sheet within the western part of the Sevier fold‐thrust belt record enhanced cooling and exhumation during major thrust slip spanning approximately 125–90 Ma. ZHe and zircon fission track age‐paleodepth patterns along structural transects and age‐distance relations along stratigraphic‐parallel traverses, combined with thermo‐kinematic modeling, constrain the fault slip history, with estimated slip rates of ~1 km/Myr from 125 to 105 Ma, increasing to ~3 km/Myr from 105 to 92 Ma, and then decreasing as major slip was transferred onto eastern thrusts. Exhumation was concentrated during motion up thrust ramps with estimated erosion rates of ~0.1 to 0.3 km/Myr.
