Role of Mechanical Factors in the Morphology of the Primate Cerebral Cortex

The convoluted cortex of primates is instantly recognizable in its principal morphologic features, yet puzzling in its complex finer structure. Various hypotheses have been proposed about the mechanisms of its formation. Based on the analysis of databases of quantitative architectonic and connection data for primate prefrontal cortices, we offer support for the hypothesis that tension exerted by corticocortical connections is a significant factor in shaping the cerebral cortical landscape. Moreover, forces generated by cortical folding influence laminar morphology, and appear to have a previously unsuspected impact on cellular migration during cortical development. The evidence for a significant role of mechanical factors in cortical morphology opens the possibility of constructing computational models of cortical develoment based on physical principles. Such models are particularly relevant for understanding the relationship of cortical morphology to the connectivity of normal brains, and structurally altered brains in diseases of developmental origin, such as schizophrenia and autism

Reminiscência enquanto ferramenta de trabalho com idosos : vantagens e limitações

O objectivo deste artigo é analisar a importância da reminiscência enquanto estratégia terapêutica junto de idosos. Explora-se o conceito de reminiscência tal como decorre no quotidiano e analisa-se o seu surgimento como estratégia de trabalho com idosos, considerando os seus principais âmbitos de intervenção, desde moldes preventivos, como a adaptação à institucionalização, até níveis remediativos, como a estimulação do funcionamento cognitivo em quadros demenciais. Por fim, listam-se aquelas que se consideram ser as principais limitações inerentes à Terapia de Reminiscência no trabalho com idosos, nomeadamente a ausência de modelos estruturados de intervenção e as lacunas referentes a estratégias intencionais de avaliação de eficácia dos mesmos. Apresentam- se algumas estratégias promotoras da eficácia da Terapia de Reminiscência.The main objective of this paper is the analysis of reminiscence, naming is advantages and limitations as an intervention tool towards older adults. We first consider reminiscence as a daily happening, constrained by the social and historical background of the participant. We then describe the adaptation of this strategy to the work with older adults, in prevention or remediation, such as adaptation to institutions or cognitive stimulation in dementias. Finally, we list the main limitations in reminiscence therapy, namely the absence of structured intervention models and the shortfall of strategies to assess their efficiency. O presente relatório foi estruturado de acordo com o regulamento da prática de ensino supervisionada dos cursos habilitadores à docência do Instituto Politécnico da Guarda. As práticas de ensino supervisionadas que se realizaram em instituições do Ensino Pré-Escolar e do 1º Ciclo do Ensino Básico permitiram colocar em prática conhecimentos adquiridos para com as diferentes faixas etárias com que tivemos o prazer de ensinar e aprender; experienciar a realidade das instituições de educação e refletir sobre esta mesma realidade e as práticas pedagógicas desenvolvidas. A infância de uma criança é, maioritariamente, marcada por histórias que preenchem e enriquecem o seu imaginário. A poesia, como corrente literária, estudada e investigada pelos contemporâneos, é vista como um meio de desenvolvimento cognitivo e social que tem contributos fundamentais na evolução da criança, mas nem sempre é valorizada no meio escolar. Assim, o presente relatório pretende explorar a importância pedagógica da poesia no crescimento e desenvolvimento da criança e posteriormente apresenta algumas estratégias de atividades a serem realizadas em ambiente pré-escolar com vista à promoção e valorização da poesia

Bluetooth Tracking Approach For User Assistance Based In Sequential Patterns Analysis.

As a civilization, we are drowning in a raging torrent of data, of our own making, that is being harvested by our collective technologies and systems (e.g. Fitbit, phones). However, data itself is of no utility unless it is converted into beneficial knowledge. Design patterns have been shown to be a pragmatic solution to control and manage information flows and provide order and mean-ing to data within a given context. Assisting users within their daily activities has become a key aspect for modern Artificial Intelligence Systems. Neverthe-less, although the GPS technologies work well for outside location, indoor posi-tioning is still problematic, while is a vital awareness component in ambient as-sistance. This paper shows a preliminary Bluetooth tracking system with a focus on the user’s transition between areas of interest. Our work aims to shed light on how the term design patterns can be applied for studying human behavior patterns in the smart environment
