CONSERVATION 4.0. POSSIBLE GUIDLINES FOR STANDARDISING THE DOCUMENTAL PROCESS FOR ARTISTIC HERITAGE
Abstract. The contribution addresses the definition of a new standardised method for the documentation of the restoration process. In the frame of a conservation laboratory open to the public, the research drew up the guidelines for a documental and representative methods discussing the definition of a contemporary conservation praxis facing with digital technologies. The research stems from a restoration of a Polyptych, Madonna con Bambino, Santi e Apostoli by Vittore Crivelli, damaged by earthquake of 2016 and temporarily showcased at Pinacoteca of San Domenico in Fano (PU). The public could visit the workplace set up and use the experimental informative system created from conservative data and results of intervention. To do this, the general process of documentation has progressed in strong synergy with restoration work. Thanks to the collaboration between experts, the project has established a set of priorities in order to capitalise the global results and better communicate each phase of intervention. The content of the study focuses on identifying guidelines that would form a possible framework for documentation useful for conservation of artistic heritage. The standard workflow presented in the paper may potentially influence the theory of conservation as well as the practice. Developing a new approach to heritage, the study aims at bringing digital strategies into the field of conservation in order to propose the new idea of Conservation 4.0
The problem of surveying and representing buildings in the conservation and restoration fields gets more and more importance when considered as mean of analysis and management of data for the knowledge of an architectural organism.
The first step of knowledge must be of metric type therefore the aim is the qualification of architectural data in a confined space.
Once collected, data can be useful for other disciplines as a base for other information type like historical, typological, physical, chemical, etc.; and also as support for the management of activities of maintenance and planning of interventions.
Following above structure ideas, the survey and the representation of buildings show their importance involving nowadays several operators (surveyors, architects, engineers, informatics, historians, etc.) and requiring common ways of univocal interpretation of codes, symbols and graphic signs

GIS and 3D Models as Support to Documentation and Planning of the Baku Historical Centre (Republic of Azerbaijan)
The walled city of Baku, Icherisheher has been described as one of the best examples of a city that has retained its historical stratigraphy in over a thousand years, where the different influences and its evolution in time may be appreciated. In realising the Master Plan of the historical city, many problems were solved with different information technologies (GIS, DEM, DTM, etc.) for the survey and data mapping management during all the phases of the project. Initially the analysis was addressed to systematic reading of the documents collected during the iconographic study, verifying the process of deterioration that the historic city had suffered during various periods from the Khans to the Tsarist domain, and from the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Soviet period through to its independence. The entire central part of the historic city was analyzed, including not only on its special architectural and urban monuments, but even minor buildings, which are in part still intact, used as a basis for a digital map created in order to focus on Baku's historical evolution. A three-dimensional model of the historic centre of Baku was then produced as a basis not only for virtual navigation in real time, but as additional support for planning studies and to better understand the principles of various design choices. The request to produce a model in VRML format addressed the choice of better modelling methods. The combination of these different technologies and their application in the analysis of historical cities led to further considerations on data acquisition systems, standardization of formats, the use of survey instruments and the use of different software, etc., all fundamental elements to the define their correct use.DiSBEF, University of Urbino, Campus Scientifico "E.
Abstract
The use of the techniques laser scanner for the survey of the Cultural Heritage allows to realize
complete geometric models at high resolution. The technique is based on a simple and applicable
operating approach in general way, also for the documentation of elements of complex geometry, in
order to arrive to their representation by means of traditional plants and prospects or threedimensional
models.
On the base of the relieves realized near Forte S. Elmo in Malta within the European Project
P.A.G.U.S. has been elaborated three-dimensional models textured with photo, producing a new
virtual model that allows to check temporally the maintenance of architectural structure for
restoration, recovery, control of the structural deformations and cataloguing. In fact, in every 3D
model, the small and visible real characteristics are visible only to a closer distance and can be
exanimate in interactive way. They allow to study interesting details as instruments signs or particular of surfaces. Besides, places that must be closed to the public for maintenance reasons, can
still be studied and visited once created a 3D model.
This type of three-dimensional modelling favours the realization of environments of virtual reality
(VR) navigable interactively, important for a new form of communication that is suffering deep
changes, becoming multimedia for skilled people and to give therefore the opportunity to perceive
every aspect of the cultural patrimony to blind people, to make to approach to so many masterpieces
of the territory who it hardly finds many accessible places, to communicate the emotion of the
beauty to whom sees isolated in the silence.
These modelling system can be structured as banks given report them, explorable from the
consumer through workstations, with a series of information like a great catalogue. Information can
be organized in ipertextual form and the access to the information (link) will be iconic or textual. In
fact single realities can be reproduced, on the base of the reliefs realized with laser scanners, in their
geometric shape: the visitor will be able to zoom and see them in other dimensions and from
different point of view
The castle Colonna of Arnara: from the restoration of the monument to the enhancement of the ancient village and its territory
[EN] The castle of Arnara, is located in Ciociaria in southern Lazio, in what was once the feud of the Conti of
Ceccano. For the territory it is the most important monumental complex of medieval architecture. In
fact, despite its small size, it is one of the few examples of fortified architecture still original in its essential lines. This castle represents an exceptional case of sedimentation and stratification, which even
today, from its reading, allows us to reconstruct both its historical events and those related to the urban
development of the adjacent historic village. Moreover it can be considered of priority importance also
from the urbanistic point of view because it represents the first historical nucleus of Arnara.
Unfortunately, today, the castle is in a bad state of conservation. With the passing of time its conditions have become more and more aggravated also because of the complex events linked to the various
passages of property, of private and public nature, which have strongly influenced the management of
the monument. The study of the castle of Arnara is part of the national and international debate that considers participation a key factor for the sustainable enhancement of the cultural heritage, because it promotes greater awareness of its social and economic value. The objective of the research work is to develop, taking the castle as a case study, a new approach that sees cultural heritage (tangible and intangible) as an irreplaceable heritage of knowledge and as a precious resource for economic growth, employment and social cohesion; therefore a cultural heritage seen as a driving force. In the specific case
of Colonna Castle, attention has been focused on the importance of being able to activate virtuous circles around this very important place of culture, enhancing its role as a centre of knowledge and incubator of creativity and social innovation.Cattaneo, A.; Baratin, L. 3-d visualization and animation of architectonic elements for prehistoric megalithic temples of the island of Gozo: the temple of Ggantija
Laser scanning can now be defined without doubt as the newest frontier in the field of survey technique, and recent technological
developments of instruments and processing software have encouraged the introduction of this technique in the world of applications
connected to archaeological site and other related disciplines. The temple of Ggantija on the island of Gozo was considered to be
representative of the entire series of temple complexes due to their particular architectural characteristics, their stage of evolution and
form of deterioration, both material and structural.
The survey was conducted by the use of the local geodetic network in the different phases:
âą Topographic survey
âą 3D laser scanner survey
âą Photographic Survey: both traditional and digital pictures will be taken in order to fully documentation internal and
external surfaces of the site.
The treatment and analysis of data collections was divided into the following sub-stages: elaboration and compensation of close
polygonal, thickening polygonal and direct measurements; elaboration and compensation of altimetric network; linking of the above
data with the existing Maltese national networks; elaboration of laser scanner positions and absolute orientations; elaboration of
points coordinates for georeferencing and linking the point clouds coming from laser; final data verification end quality control;
analysis of laser measured point clouds, for filtering and subsequent elaboration; scanning orientations and subdivision into âislandsâ
(internal rooms and external sides); analysis of laser measured point clouds over the grid determined by the topographic survey.;
modelling of the Archaeological site, elimination of noises and metric "pollution" by statistics and verification; accentuation and
reduction of triangles on areas interested by complex geometries; triangles transformation into complex surfaces (mesh); model
checking by topographic points; mapping of digital photocolors covering all the surfaces of the site.
The digital model will be cut by vertical and horizontal section plans at heights requested by customer 2D graphic editing of the
plans, sections and elevations. Finishing of vertical sections (sections and views) using the mapped model created by rendering
calculated, generating contours lines from the 3D model; of a light model (low density model) of the laser scanner data using the
filtering tools of the software package; of an virtual animation of the high density model; of a mapped VRML (Virtual Reality
Modelling Language) model for a web interactive and hypertestual navigation, using the low density model.
This part of the study was aimed at defining the architectural characteristics and mode of construction of this monument
