Stability of an MHD shear flow with a piecewise linear velocity profile

In this paper we present the results of the stability analysis of a simple shear flow of an incompressible fluid with a piecewise linear velocity profile in the presence of a magnetic field. In the flow, a finite transitional magnetic-free layer with a linear velocity profile is sandwiched by two semi-infinite regions. One of these regions is magnetic-free and the flow velocity in the region is constant. The other region is magnetic and the fluid in it is quiescent. The magnetic field is constant and parallel to the flow in the transitional layer. The fluid density is constant both in the magnetic as well as the magnetic-free regions, while it has a jump-type discontinuity at the boundary between the transitional layer and the magnetic region. The effect of gravity is included in the model, and it is assumed that the lighter fluid is overlaying the heavier one, thus no Rayleigh-Taylor instability is present. The dispersion equation governing the normal-mode stability of the flow is derived and its properties are analysed. We study stability of two cases: (i) magnetic-free flow in the presence of gravity, and (ii) magnetic flow without gravity. In the first case, the flow stability is controlled by the Rayleigh number, R. In the second case, the control parameter is the inverse squared Alfvénic Mach number, H . Stability of a particular monochromatic perturbation also depends on its dimensionless wavenumber α. We combine the analytical and numerical approaches to obtain the neutral stability curves in the (α,R)-plane in the case of the magnetic-free flow, and in the (α,H)-plane in the case of the magnetic flow. The dependence of the instability increment on R in the first case, and on H in the second case is treated. We apply the results of the analysis to the stability of a strongly subsonic portion of the heliopause. Our main conclusion is as follows: The inclusion of a transitional layer near the heliopause into the model increases by an order of magnitude the strength of the interstellar magnetic field required to stabilize this portion of the heliopause in comparison with the corresponding stabilizing strength of the magnetic field required when modelling the heliopause as a tangential discontinuity

Particle Event Generator: A Simple-in-Use System PEGASUS version 1.0

PEGASUS is a parton-level Monte-Carlo event generator designed to calculate cross sections for a wide range of hard QCD processes at high energy pppp and ppˉp\bar p collisions, which incorporates the dynamics of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distributions in a proton. Being supplemented with off-shell production amplitudes for a number of partonic subprocesses and provided with necessary TMD gluon density functions, it produces weighted or unweighted event records which can be saved as a plain data file or a file in a commonly used Les Houches Event format. A distinctive feature of PEGASUS is an intuitive and extremely user friendly interface, allowing one to easily implement various kinematical cuts into the calculations. Results can be also presented "on the fly" with built-in tool \textsc{pegasus plotter}. A short theoretical basis is presented and detailed program description is given.Comment: 24 pages, 8 figure

Robustness of Fractional Quantum Hall States with Dipolar Atoms in Artificial Gauge Fields

The robustness of fractional quantum Hall states is measured as the energy gap separating the Laughlin ground-state from excitations. Using thermodynamic approximations for the correlation functions of the Laughlin state and the quasihole state, we evaluate the gap in a two-dimensional system of dipolar atoms exposed to an artificial gauge field. For Abelian fields, our results agree well with the results of exact diagonalization for small systems, but indicate that the large value of the gap predicted in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 070404 (2005)] was overestimated. However, we are able to show that the small gap found in the Abelian scenario is dramatically increased if we turn to non-Abelian fields squeezing the Landau levels

Solar cycle influence on the interaction of the solar wind with Local Interstellar Cloud

We present results of a new time-dependent kinetic model of the H atom penetration through the solar wind - interstellar medium interaction region. A kinetic 6D (time, two dimensions in space, and three dimensions in velocity-space) equation for interstellar H atoms was solved self-consistently with time-dependent Euler equations for the solar wind and interstellar charged components. We study the response of the interaction region to 11-year solar cycle variations of the solar wind dynamic pressure. It is shown that the termination shock location varies within ±7 AU, the heliopause variation is ~4 AU, and the bow shock variation is negligible. At large heliocentric distances, the solar cycle induces 10-12% fluctuations in the number density of both primary and secondary interstellar H atoms and atoms created in the inner heliosheath. We underline the kinetic behavior of the fluctuations of the H atom populations. Closer to the Sun the fluctuations increase up to 30-35% at 5 AU due to solar cycle variation of the charge exchange rate. Solar cycle variations of interstellar H atoms in the heliospheric interface and within the heliosphere may have major importance for the interpretation of H atom observations inside the heliosphere
