Secular dynamics of long-range interacting particles on a sphere in the axisymmetric limit

We investigate the secular dynamics of long-range interacting particles moving on a sphere, in the limit of an axisymmetric mean field potential. We show that this system can be described by the general kinetic equation, the inhomogeneous Balescu--Lenard equation. We use this approach to compute long-term diffusion coefficients, that are compared with direct simulations. Finally, we show how the scaling of the system's relaxation rate with the number of particles fundamentally depends on the underlying frequency profile. This clarifies why systems with a monotonic profile undergo a kinetic blocking and cannot relax as a whole under 1/N{1/N} resonant effects. Because of its general form, this framework can describe the dynamics of globally coupled classical Heisenberg spins, long-range couplings in liquid crystals, or the orbital inclination evolution of stars in nearly Keplerian systems.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, submitted to PR

Phase transition in the bounded one-dimensional multitrap system

We have previously discussed the diffusion limited problem of the bounded one-dimensional multitrap system where no external fiel is included and pay special attention to the transmission of the diffusing particles through the system of imperfect traps. We discuss here the case in which an external field is included to each trap and find not only the transmission but also the energy associated with the diffusing particles in the presence and absence of such fields. From the energy we find the specific heat ChC_h and show that for certain values of the parameters associated with the multitrap system it behaves in a manner which is suggestive of phase transition. Moreover, this phase transition is demonstrated not only through the conventional single peak at which the specific heat function is undifferentiable but also through the less frequent phenomenon of double peaks.Comment: 25 pages, 6 PS Figures, there have been introduced many changes including the remove of two figure

Stochastic block-models for multiplex networks:An application to a multilevel network of researchers

Modelling relationships between individuals is a classical question in social sci- ences and clustering individuals according to the observed patterns of interactions allows us to uncover a latent structure in the data. The stochastic block model is a popular approach for grouping individuals with respect to their social comportment. When several relationships of various types can occur jointly between individuals, the data are represented by multiplex networks where more than one edge can exist between the nodes. We extend stochastic block models to multiplex networks to obtain a clustering based on more than one kind of relation- ship. We propose to estimate the parameters—such as the marginal probabilities of assignment to groups (blocks) and the matrix of probabilities of connections between groups—through a variational expectation–maximization procedure. Consistency of the estimates is studied. The number of groups is chosen by using the integrated completed likelihood criterion, which is a penalized likelihood criterion. Multiplex stochastic block models arise in many situations but our applied example is motivated by a network of French cancer researchers. The two possi- ble links (edges) between researchers are a direct connection or a connection through their laboratories. Our results show strong interactions between these two kinds of connection and the groups that are obtained are discussed to emphasize the common features of researchers grouped together

Study of solutions to optimize the extraction of hemp fibers for composite materials

    Get PDF
Fibres from hemp stems can be extracted through different mechanical processes following dew or water retting etc. Extraction processes generally have a significant impact on mechanical and morphological properties of the fibres. In this study, hemp fibres are extracted following three different ways. In the first route hemp fibres are extracted from FUTURA 75 variety stems by performing scutching, hackling and microwave degumming. A second batch of fibres of the same variety was extracted by scutching and hackling after an initial microwave degumming treatment. In the third route, the same variety of hemp fibres are extracted from dew retted stems grown at Piacenza (Italy). Finally, the mechanical properties of single fibres as well as the fineness of technical fibres of all types of extracted fibres are evaluated and compared and the interest of the microwave degumming for hemp stem is evaluated

Genomics; Transcriptomics; Lung cancerGenómica; Transcriptómica; Cáncer de pulmónGenòmica; Transcriptòmica; Càncer de pulmóBackground The Worldwide Innovative Network (WIN) Consortium has developed the Simplified Interventional Mapping System (SIMS) to better define the cancer molecular milieu based on genomics/transcriptomics from tumor and analogous normal tissue biopsies. SPRING is the first trial to assess a SIMS-based tri-therapy regimen in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods Patients with advanced NSCLC (no EGFR, ALK, or ROS1 alterations; PD-L1 unrestricted; ≤2 prior therapy lines) received avelumab, axitinib, and palbociclib (3 + 3 dose escalation design). Results Fifteen patients were treated (five centers, four countries): six at each of dose levels 1 (DL1) and DL2; three at DL3. The most common ≥Grade 3 adverse events were neutropenia, hypertension, and fatigue. The recommended Phase II dose (RP2D) was DL1: avelumab 10 mg/kg IV q2weeks, axitinib 3 mg po bid, and palbociclib 75 mg po daily (7 days off/21 days on). Four patients (27%) achieved a partial response (PR) (progression-free survival [PFS]: 14, 24, 25 and 144+ weeks), including two after progression on pembrolizumab. Four patients attained stable disease (SD) that lasted ≥24 weeks: 24, 27, 29, and 64 weeks. At DL1 (RP2D), four of six patients (66%) achieved stable disease (SD) ≥6 months/PR (2 each). Responders included patients with no detectable PD-L1 expression and low tumor mutational burden. Conclusions Overall, eight of 15 patients (53%) achieved clinical benefit (SD ≥ 24 weeks/PR) on the avelumab, axitinib, and palbociclib combination. This triplet showed antitumor activity in NSCLC, including in tumors post-pembrolizumab progression, and was active at the RP2D, which was well tolerated. This work was supported by the ARC Foundation for Cancer Research, Villejuif, France and Worldwide Innovative Network (WIN) Association––WIN Consortium, Villejuif, France, sponsor of the study.
