This paper deals with biometric personal identification based on iris recognition using artificial neural network. The Iris recognition system includes pupil detection, and the enhancement, region of interest of iris detected from an eye image then, the iris recognition using neural network approach. For the localization of the inner and outer boundaries of the iris region is being proposed a fast algorithm by us. Located pupil is detected from an eye image, and, after enhancement, located iris part is detected from an eye image, it is represented by a dataset. In this paper, we proposed a neural network based iris recognition approach by analyzing iris patterns. Hough transforms are used for localizing the part of iris region; then, histogram equalization was applied to the iris an image for making the shapes an image more distinctive. The gray-level iris images, experimented in this work, were obtained from the Institute Automation Chinese Academy of Science (CASIA) iris images database version 1.0

Comparison of Dubowitz scoring versus Ballard scoring for assessment of fetal maturation of newly born infants setting

Background: Different scoring systems based on neurological and physical examination are used in the neonatal units for assessment of gestational age. Assessment of gestational age is very much helpful in labelling the newborn to be preterm, term or post – term and to assess the further outcome of the newborn infants. Present study was performed to test the accuracy and reliability of the Ballard scoring system as compared to Dubowitz scoring system on 250 newborn infants and their correlation with the gestational age as calculated from first day of mother’s last menstrual period. In infants of 38 weeks onwards correlation of gestational age was done with the extension of plantar creases over sole. Methods: Infants studied were selected from infants born in Muzaffarnagar Medical College and Hospital Muzaffarnagar and those infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit. First of all methods of eliciting different criteria were experienced by examining several newborn infants and then Dubowitz and Ballard scoring system were performed separately and gestational age assessed. crease was measured, using metallic scale from base of great toe after stretching the sole. Results: Gestational ages estimated by Ballard scoring system and Dubowitz system strongly correlated with the gestational ages computed from the date of mother’s last menstrual period. The coefficient of correlation calculated between Ballard and Dubowitz scoring system showed perfect positive correlation on the regression line.  Association of gestational age with the length of sole crease was also very significant. Conclusions: The clinical test of maturation described by Ballard et al and which is evaluated in the present study, takes a balanced look at physical and neurological maturation and included those items found to be most useful regardless of the presence or absence of diseased state.

Potential predictors of surgical evacuation following early medical abortion: a prospective study

Background: Medical management is the safer, effective and more convenient method for the management of missed abortion. Owing to the risk and complications, medical management is offered to all the women presenting with missed abortions. Yet after all possible efforts a large number of patients land up into surgical evacuation. This study is conducted for the in-depth analysis of the patient's presenting complaints and their risk factors to establish the correlation of these factors with failed medical abortion. This would help in the establishment of easily identifiable subgroups for whom medical management would be a success. Methods: This is a prospective observational study conducted at St. Stephen’s hospital Delhi during September 2019-June 2020. 55 women with missed abortion attending the gynaecological clinic and emergency, were recruited based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. After taking informed and written consent, all cases were administered misoprostol by vaginal route for medical management. Patients were followed up for 24 hours and looked for the outcome. Results: We found that multiparity, advanced gestational age and previous caesarean deliveries were the predictors of uterine evacuation following failed medical management. Higher chances of complete abortion were seen among multiparous and among the patients who had bleeding at the time of presentation. Failure of medical management was seen in around 70% cases with more than 9 weeks gestational age. Lesser side effects are observed with 400 mcg misoprostol dosing. Conclusions: Nulliparous patients and the patients presenting with bleeding at the time of presentation had more complete abortion. Multiparity and previous caesarean delivery is associated with failed medical management. After studying the potential risk factors, every patient can be counselled about the chances of completion of medical management

Comparison between the conventional method and molecular line probe assay for identification and drug sensitivity of mycobacteria tuberculosis from clinical specimens

    Get PDF
Rapid susceptibility testing of Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains is imperative for therapy selection but traditional drug susceptibility tests take weeks or are expensive. Classical drug susceptibility (DST) may take up to 2 to 4 months. The line probe assay is a commercially available line-probe assay that rapidly detects Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) complex, as well as the most common mutations associated with rifampicin and isoniazid. In this study we assessed the sensitivity and specificity of the rapid molecular method in comparison with the conventional method
