Reduced incidence of hypertension after heterotopic cardiac transplantation compared with orthotopic cardiac transplantation Evidence that excision of the native heart contributes to post-transplant hypertension
ObjectivesThis study was designed to test the hypothesis that heterotopic heart transplant (HHT) patients have lower blood pressure than orthotopic cardiac transplant (OCT) patients because their native heart is involved in blood pressure homeostasis.BackgroundHypertension occurs more frequently after OCT than after liver or lung transplantation, suggesting that transplantation of the heart itself contributes to post-transplant hypertension.MethodsBlood pressure and related measurements in 233 OCT and 38 HHT patients were studied retrospectively post-transplant.ResultsSystolic blood pressure (SBP) was persistently lower among HHT patients (means 121 vs. 137, 126 vs. 137, 125 vs. 139, and 128 vs. 143 mm Hg at month 3 and years 1, 3, and 5 respectively, p < 0.005). Left ventricular and aortic systolic pressures were also lower (130 vs. 143 mm Hg, p = 0.01 and 129 vs. 142 mm Hg, p = 0.01). Multivariable analysis with age, gender, body mass index, creatinine, steroids, cyclosporine, use of antihypertensive medication, donor left ventricular ejection fraction, donor weight, and type of transplant as covariables showed HHT to be independently associated with a lower SBP at each time point (beta-coefficients −16.2, −12.1, −13.3, and −14.2 mm Hg, p < 0.01). The adjusted hazard ratio for the development of systolic hypertension among HHT compared with OCT patients was 0.59 (95% confidence interval 0.39 to 0.91, p = 0.017).ConclusionsHeterotopic heart transplant patients had lower SBP than OCT patients, consistent with the hypothesis that the native heart continues to contribute to blood pressure homeostasis
Next to leading order eta production at hadron colliders
Inclusive eta production at hadron colliders is considered,based on
evaluation of eta fragmentation functions at next to leading order. Absolute
predictions at LHC and SSC are presented, including the ratio ,
together with the estimate of the theoretical uncertainty, as a possible

Time Reversal Violation from the entangled B0-antiB0 system
We discuss the concepts and methodology to implement an experiment probing
directly Time Reversal (T) non-invariance, without any experimental connection
to CP violation, by the exchange of "in" and "out" states. The idea relies on
the B0-antiB0 entanglement and decay time information available at B factories.
The flavor or CP tag of the state of the still living neutral meson by the
first decay of its orthogonal partner overcomes the problem of irreversibility
for unstable systems, which prevents direct tests of T with incoherent particle
states. T violation in the time evolution between the two decays means
experimentally a difference between the intensities for the time-ordered (l^+
X, J/psi K_S) and (J/psi K_L, l^- X) decays, and three other independent
asymmetries. The proposed strategy has been applied to simulated data samples
of similar size and features to those currently available, from which we
estimate the significance of the expected discovery to reach many standard

Transverse mass and invariant mass observables for measuring the mass of a semi-invisibly decaying heavy particle
Formulae are derived for the positions of end-points in the invariant mass
and transverse mass distributions obtained from the products of heavy states
decaying to pairs of semi-invisibly decaying lighter states. Formulae are
derived both for the special case where the two decay chains are identical and
the more general case where they are different. The formulae are tested with a
simple case study of heavy SUSY higgs particles decaying to gauginos at the

Higher-Order QCD Corrections to Inclusive Particle Production in p anti-p Collisions
Inclusive single-particle production cross sections have been calculated
including higher-order QCD corrections. Transverse-momentum and rapidity
distributions are presented and the scale dependence is studied. The results
are compared with experimental data from the CERN S(p anti-p)S Collider and the

Propagation of chaos for rank-based interacting diffusions and long time behaviour of a scalar quasilinear parabolic equation
We study a quasilinear parabolic Cauchy problem with a cumulative
distribution function on the real line as an initial condition. We call
'probabilistic solution' a weak solution which remains a cumulative
distribution function at all times. We prove the uniqueness of such a solution
and we deduce the existence from a propagation of chaos result on a system of
scalar diffusion processes, the interactions of which only depend on their
ranking. We then investigate the long time behaviour of the solution. Using a
probabilistic argument and under weak assumptions, we show that the flow of the
Wasserstein distance between two solutions is contractive. Under more stringent
conditions ensuring the regularity of the probabilistic solutions, we finally
derive an explicit formula for the time derivative of the flow and we deduce
