    There is an increasing tendency to use the development experience of Asian countries as a reference point for other countries in the Global South. Korea’s condensed urbanization and industrialization, accompanied by the expansion of new cities and industrial complexes across the country, have become one such model, even if the fruits of such development may not have been equitably shared across geographies and generations. The chapters in this book critically reassess the Korean urban development experience from regional policy to new town development, demonstrating how these policy experiences were deeply rooted in Korea’s socioeconomic environment and discussing what can be learned from them when applying them in other developmental context

    Catalytic N-oxidation of tertiary amines on RuO(2)NPs anchored graphene nanoplatelets

    Ultrafine ruthenium oxide nanoparticles (RuO2NPs) with an average diameter of 1.3 nm were anchored on graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) using a Ru(acac)3 precursor by a very simple dry synthesis method. The resultant material (GNPs–RuO2NPs) was used as a heterogeneous catalyst for the N-oxidation of tertiary amines for the first time. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images of the GNPs–RuO2NPs showed the excellent attachment of RuO2NPs on GNPs. The loading of Ru in GNPs–RuO2NPs was 2.68 wt%, as confirmed by scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). The X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS) and the X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD) of GNPs–RuO2NPs revealed that the chemical state of Ru on GNPs was +4. After the optimization of reaction conditions for N-oxidation of triethylamine, the scope of the reaction was extended to various aliphatic, alicyclic and aromatic tertiary amines. The GNPs–RuO2NPs showed excellent catalytic activity in terms of yields even at a very low amount of Ru catalyst (0.13 mol%).     Surgical experience of pericardial mesothelioma presenting as constrictive pericarditis

    SummaryWe report two cases, which had been initially diagnosed with constrictive pericarditis but later were definitely diagnosed with mesothelioma after receiving pericardiectomy. The two patients complained of dyspnea. Chest computed tomography showed mild pericardial effusion and thickened pericardium, which was found enveloping the heart without any lumps. Pericardiectomy (phrenic nerve to phrenic nerve) was performed and post-operative histology confirmed malignant mesothelioma. One patient had recurrence near the pericardium at 7 months post-operatively and died at 11 months post-operatively. Another patient, after receiving chemotherapy, is still alive at 16 months post-operatively. We consider that pericardial mesothelioma, an extremely rare disease exhibiting clinical signs similar to those of constrictive pericarditis, must be diagnosed at the early stage of its onset

    The effect of actinomycin D on the fibroblast of the pulp of the rat incisor : A study by quantitative radioautography and electron microscopy

    The effect of actinomycin D on the fibroblast of the dental pulp of continuously growing rat incisors is studied by means of radioautography and electron microscopy. Results of grain counts of radioautographs at various times following an injection of H3-leucine indicate that there is a progressive decrease in incorporation of the isotope by fibroblasts which reaches a maximum decrease on day 7 and subsequently regenerate to a near normal value by the end of the experiment on day 21.Electron microscopic observations of the fine structure of the fibroblast parallel the radioautographic findings in that the maximum degeneration of intracellular structures is observed on day 7 with gradual recovery from that point on. The most seriously affected structures are the rough surfaced endoplasmic reticulum, the Golgi apparatus and the appearance of polyribosomes, the structures that are thought to be directly involved in the elaboration and secretion of proteins. In addition, increased irregularity in size and shape of mitochondria is observed. A large number of lipid droplets as well as cytolysomes appear during the period between 7 and 10 days.     Interfacial Engineering at Quantum Dot-Sensitized TiO2 Photoelectrodes for Ultrahigh Photocurrent Generation

    Metal oxide semiconductor/chalcogenide quantum dot (QD) heterostructured photoanodes show photocurrent densities >30 mA/cm2 with ZnO, approaching the theoretical limits in photovoltaic (PV) cells. However, comparative performance has not been achieved with TiO2. Here, we applied a TiO2(B) surface passivation layer (SPL) on TiO2/QD (PbS and CdS) and achieved a photocurrent density of 34.59 mA/cm2 under AM 1.5G illumination for PV cells, the highest recorded to date. The SPL improves electron conductivity by increasing the density of surface states, facilitating multiple trapping/detrapping transport, and increasing the coordination number of TiO2 nanoparticles. This, along with impeded electron recombination, led to enhanced collection efficiency, which is a major factor for performance. Furthermore, SPL-treated TiO2/QD photoanodes were successfully exploited in photoelectrochemical water splitting cells, showing an excellent photocurrent density of 14.43 mA/cm2 at 0.82 V versus the Reversible Hydrogen Electrode (RHE).     A highly hydrophilic water-insoluble nanofiber composite as an efficient and easily-handleable adsorbent for the rapid adsorption of cesium from radioactive wastewater

    Herein, we report a new Prussian blue nanoparticle (PBNPs) incorporated polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite nanofiber (c-PBNPs/PVA) for the rapid adsorption of cesium (Cs) from radioactive wastewater. Initially, various electrospinning parameters such as solvent, PVA wt%, PBNPs wt% and glutaraldehyde (GA) wt% were extensively optimized to obtain a better physicochemical property of the c-PBNPs/PVA. In order to improve the water insoluble nature of the PVA, post cross-linking was carried out for the c-PBNPs/PVA using glutaraldehyde (GA) and HCl vapor as the cross-linker and catalyst, respectively. SEM images revealed the smooth and continuous morphology of the c-PBNPs/PVA composite nanofibers with diameters of 200–300 nm and lengths up to several millimeters. TEM images confirmed homogeneous dispersion and good incorporation of PBNPs into the PVA matrix. The amorphous nature of the c-PBNPs/PVA was confirmed by the XRD analysis. FT-IR spectra showed successful cross-linking of PVA with GA. It was found that the prepared composite nanofiber is highly hydrophilic and water-insoluble. The c-PBNPs/PVA showed an excellent and faster Cs adsorption rate of 96% after only 100 min. These results are comparable to those previously reported. After the Cs adsorption test, the c-PBNPs/PVA composite nanofiber can be easily separated from the wastewater.ArticleRSC ADVANCES. 4(103):59571-59578 (2014)journal articl
