Poison Ivy\u27s green screen debut: A rhetorical criticism on erasing identity on screen

    Get PDF
This project investigates the loss of power on screen for female comic book characters. Specifically, I investigate how scenes create narratives using heteronormativity and over-sexualization of female characters. The artifact of analysis included in this project is Batman and Robin (1997). This text focuses on Poison Ivy, including the background of the character before dissecting her role in the film. Turning to Sonja J. Foss (2009) and her feminist critique as a guide to understanding the implications of this research. Using feminist criticism, I argue that Poison Ivy was put in a lesser position, removed of her power, and was made dependent on men more than she is in comics. Poison Ivy was created from the feminist movement, and Batman and Robin (1997) create tension between the comic book representation and the expectation of gender. Superheroes have skyrocketed in popularity over the past fifteen years, and their narratives are extending to individuals that are not necessarily comic readers. This cultural significance of superheroes suggests that comic books and therefore their characters appeal to a wide audience who has the potential to be influenced, even implicitly, by these messages

The Impact of Women Legislators on Introduction of Social Legislation into a Southern State House

The study investigated the interest of male and female legislators in social legislation as measured by the number of bills each group introduced. Legislators included in the study were the entire female population of the North Carolina General Assembly House of Representatives serving between January and July 1981, and an equal number of their male colleagues randomly selected. Comparisons of the female and male legislators in the study criteria such as number of legislative terms served, relative power of committees on which they served, number of committee chairpersonships and independent rankings and effectiveness by colleagues, lobbyists and the media revealed that the male legislators lead by significant margins on all criteria. Results of the study were that the women introduced more bills and more social legislation. Of the 159 bills introduced by the women, 64 percent were identified as social legislation, while of the 111 bills introduced by the men, only 37 percent were identified as social legislation. The designations of social legislation or non-social legislation were submitted to a jury of experts for validation. Recommendations were made for further study of the interests of male and female legislators in more specific content areas

The Relationship Between Current Crime Rates and Perceived Neighborhood Safety

    Get PDF
A high crime rate is often hypothesized as a key contributor to decreased feelings of neighborhood safety (Putrick et al. 2019). Decreased feelings of neighborhood safety have been found to lead to increased health risks and depression (Putrick et al. 2019). Both findings lead to the question of the current study: what is the relationship between current crime rates and perceptions of safety? Previous studies have defined a positive perception of neighborhood safety as a lack of fear, a belief in police performance, and a belief in police legitimacy (Carter et al. 2021). To further clarify this definition for the purpose of this paper, fear is defined as a psychological emotion invoked by environmental factors and the belief that the likelihood of being a victim of crime is high (Zhang et al. 2021). Police performance and legitimacy is defined as trust and reliability in police work. The other variable that is analyzed within this study is current crime rates. Based on previous studies, crime rates were found through local police reports, the Uniform Crime Report (UCR) from the FBI, and the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) (FBI 2021; Zhang et al. 2021). Using these variables, this research project aims to understand the impact current crime rates have on the perception of neighborhood safety

    EDUCATION AND JOB MATCH: REVISITED

To study the changes in the effect of degree field on mismatch and the change in the effect of mismatch of wages over time, we revisit a study by Robst (2006) who found that workers who are mismatched earn less than adequately match workers with the same amount schooling. Using recent data from 2015 National Survey of College Graduate (NSCG), we also find a negative relationship between the case of mismatch and the outcome of workers in term of wages, even though the degree of mismatch doesn’t seem to matter as much
