CASE STUDIES FROM DIFFERENT TYPES OF HEAT EXCHANGERS TO PLATE AND SHELL HEAT EXCHANGER: A REVIEW
A Plate and Shell Heat Exchanger (PSHE) is manufactured with round welded plates in its core. These plates are designed to withstand high pressures and temperatures. Failures in this kind of heat exchanger were registered in a short operating period. To obtain the failure modes present in this equipment and a theoretical framework concerning this field of study, a research methodology was proposed (Systematic Literature Review – SLR) and a theoretical survey was carried out focusing in the 316L stainless steel and titanium grade 1 for its use in the Brazilian offshore industry. Seeing that the whole PSHE structure is welded, it is necessary to account for the strain caused by severe expansion processes in heat exchanger joints. This regarding, the laser welding process was investigated because of its narrow melting zone. It is believed that it was possible to clarify which failure modes are related to corrosive processes or stress concentration highlighting the structural and mechanical characterization models employed. Considering that the research field is relatively new, it was feasible to establish a theoretical basis of solutions applicable to PSHE, such as the use of more recessive material, reduce the corrosiveness of the operating medium, and reduce external sources of tension. Also, new content was assembled to assess the future decision-making process, regarding the design or maintenance of welded plate exchangers
Local Algorithms for Block Models with Side Information
There has been a recent interest in understanding the power of local
algorithms for optimization and inference problems on sparse graphs. Gamarnik
and Sudan (2014) showed that local algorithms are weaker than global algorithms
for finding large independent sets in sparse random regular graphs. Montanari
(2015) showed that local algorithms are suboptimal for finding a community with
high connectivity in the sparse Erd\H{o}s-R\'enyi random graphs. For the
symmetric planted partition problem (also named community detection for the
block models) on sparse graphs, a simple observation is that local algorithms
cannot have non-trivial performance.
In this work we consider the effect of side information on local algorithms
for community detection under the binary symmetric stochastic block model. In
the block model with side information each of the vertices is labeled
or independently and uniformly at random; each pair of vertices is
connected independently with probability if both of them have the same
label or otherwise. The goal is to estimate the underlying vertex
labeling given 1) the graph structure and 2) side information in the form of a
vertex labeling positively correlated with the true one. Assuming that the
ratio between in and out degree is and the average degree , we characterize three different regimes under which a
local algorithm, namely, belief propagation run on the local neighborhoods,
maximizes the expected fraction of vertices labeled correctly. Thus, in
contrast to the case of symmetric block models without side information, we
show that local algorithms can achieve optimal performance for the block model
with side information.Comment: Due to the limitation "The abstract field cannot be longer than 1,920

Biodegradation and antimicrobial properties of zinc oxide–polymer composite materials for urinary stent applications
Research advancements in the field of urinary stents have mainly been in the selection of materials and coatings to address commonly faced problems of encrustation and bacterial adhesion. In this study, polylactic acid (PLA) and polypropylene (PP) were evaluated with zinc oxide (ZnO) coating to assess its ability to reduce or eliminate the problems of encrustation and bacteria adhesion. PLA and PP films were prepared via twin screw extrusion. ZnO microparticles were prepared using sol-gel hydrothermal synthesis. The as-prepared ZnO microparticles were combined in the form of a functional coating and deposited on both polymer substrates using a doctor blade technique. The ZnO-coated PP and PLA samples as well as their uncoated counterparts were characterized from the physicochemical standpoints, antibacterial and biodegradation properties. The results demonstrated that both the polymers preserved their mechanical and thermal properties after coating with ZnO, which showed a better adhesion on PLA than on PP. Moreover, the ZnO coating successfully enhanced the antibacterial properties with respect to bare PP/PLA substrates. All the samples were investigated after immersion in simulated body fluid and artificial urine. The ZnO layer was completely degraded following 21 days immersion in artificial urine irrespective of the substrate, with encrustations more evident in PP and ZnO-coated PP films than PLA and ZnO-coated PLA films. Overall, the addition of ZnO coating on PLA displayed better adhesion, antibacterial activity and delayed the deposition of encrustations in comparison to PP substrates

The road to deterministic matrices with the restricted isometry property
The restricted isometry property (RIP) is a well-known matrix condition that
provides state-of-the-art reconstruction guarantees for compressed sensing.
While random matrices are known to satisfy this property with high probability,
deterministic constructions have found less success. In this paper, we consider
various techniques for demonstrating RIP deterministically, some popular and
some novel, and we evaluate their performance. In evaluating some techniques,
we apply random matrix theory and inadvertently find a simple alternative proof
that certain random matrices are RIP. Later, we propose a particular class of
matrices as candidates for being RIP, namely, equiangular tight frames (ETFs).
Using the known correspondence between real ETFs and strongly regular graphs,
we investigate certain combinatorial implications of a real ETF being RIP.
Specifically, we give probabilistic intuition for a new bound on the clique
number of Paley graphs of prime order, and we conjecture that the corresponding
ETFs are RIP in a manner similar to random matrices.Comment: 24 page
