    The Trial of Grace Marks

    Get PDF
In 1843, domestic servant Grace Marks and stable boy James McDermott murdered their employer Thomas Kinnear and his housekeeper Hannah Nancy Montgomery.Ā The murder took place on Kinnearā€™s farm near Richmond Hill, Ontario and their bodies were discovered by neighbours the next day. Marks and McDermott were captured shortly afterwards. During their trial for the murder of Kinnear, each blamed the other for instigating the murders. They were both sentenced to death, but only McDermott was hanged. The jury submitted a plea for mercy in the verdict of Grace Marks and her life was spared. She was incarcerated in the Kingston penitentiary for thirty years before being granted a pardon and released. Mystery still surrounds the trial of Grace Marks and James McDermott. Why was Grace Marks spared

Research on the use of cannabis rectal suppositories for analgesia is limited. Few trials have evaluated the combined use of mindfulness and cannabis suppositories for anodyspareunia in men who have sex with men (MSM). This preliminary study, including a randomised control trial (RCT) and content analysis, assessed the effectiveness of an online mindful-compassion and cannabis suppository intervention among 52 British MSM (aged 18ā€“50) who predominantly identified as bottoms (recipients of anal sex). Participants were randomly allocated to one of four groups based on whether they were using cannabis suppositories: adjunct cannabis suppository and mindful-compassion (CSMF), cannabis suppository only (CS), mindful compassion only (MF) and care as usual/control (CAU). Assessments measuring mindful compassion, sexual functioning, sexual self-efficacy, well-being, and anodyspareunia levels were completed at weeks 0, 4, and 12. Anodyspareunia levels were lower in the CSMF group compared to the other groups (CS/MF/CAU), p = 0.031. Feedback revealed that participants felt mindful compassion potentiated the effects of cannabis suppositories during sexual intimacy, reducing pain and enhancing sexual self-efficacy, sexual functioning, and well-being. This preliminary study warrants larger-scale investigation to establish the role of cannabis suppositories and mindful compassion in reducing anodyspareunia

Value co-creation with stakeholders using action research as a meta-methodology in a funded research project

Ā© 2015 by the Project Management Institute. A large applied research study is a challenging exercise in project management and is often unpredictable because of its complexity. In the beginning, funding bodies, ethics committees, and participating organizations expect a plan of what is intended. As the research evolves, researchers must meet the expectations of stakeholders while being responsive to the emergent reality that the research faces and partly uncovers. This article describes action research used as an umbrella process that enabled us to manage the research project. We used action research as a meta-methodology-that is, a process that can subsume multiple subprocesses and under which these contradicting demands can be satisfied. In particular, two characteristics enable action research to do this. One is its cyclic process, iteratively tracing out a rhythm of planning, acting, and observing the results. The other is the nesting of its cycles, applied at scales ranging from the overall study to the moment-by-moment facilitation. We illustrate this use of action research with examples from a long-term applied study of leadership in faith-based, not-for-profit organizations

Smoking Mull: a grounded theory model on the dynamics of combined tobacco and cannabis use among men

    Get PDF
Issue addressed: Australiansā€™ use of cannabis has been increasing. Over a third of Australians (35.4%) have used cannabis at some time in their lives and 10.3% are recent users. Almost two-thirds of cannabis users combine cannabis with tobacco. The aim of this study was to understand the process of mulling ā€“ smoking tobacco and cannabis together ā€“ using a grounded theory approach. Methods: Twenty-one in-depth semi structured interviews were conducted with men aged 25ā€“34 and living on the North Coast of New South Wales. Interviews explored participantsā€™ smoking practices, histories and cessation attempts. Results: A model describing mulling behaviour and the dynamics of smoking cannabis and tobacco was developed. It provides an explanatory framework that demonstrates the flexibility in smoking practices, including substance substitution ā€“ participants changed the type of cannabis they smoked, the amount of tobacco they mixed with it and the devices they used to smoke according to the situations they were in and the effects sought. Conclusion: Understanding these dynamic smoking practices and the importance of situations and effects, as well as the specific role of tobacco in mulling, may allow health workers to design more relevant and appropriate interventions. So what?: Combining tobacco with cannabis is the most common way of smoking cannabis in Australia. However, tobacco cessation programmes rarely address cannabis use. Further research to develop evidence-based approaches for mull use would improve cessation outcomes. Keywords: concomitant use, marijuana, mulling, nicotineNHMR

Window into the mind:Advanced handheld spectroscopic eye-safe technology for point-of-care neurodiagnostic

    Get PDF
Traumatic brain injury (TBI), a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, is hard to diagnose at the point of care with patients often exhibiting no clinical symptoms. There is an urgent need for rapid point-of-care diagnostics to enable timely intervention. We have developed a technology for rapid acquisition of molecular fingerprints of TBI biochemistry to safely measure proxies for cerebral injury through the eye, providing a path toward noninvasive point-of-care neurodiagnostics using simultaneous Raman spectroscopy and fundus imaging of the neuroretina. Detection of endogenous neuromarkers in porcine eyes' posterior revealed enhancement of high-wave number bands, clearly distinguishing TBI and healthy cohorts, classified via artificial neural network algorithm for automated data interpretation. Clinically, translating into reduced specialist support, this markedly improves the speed of diagnosis. Designed as a hand-held cost-effective technology, it can allow clinicians to rapidly assess TBI at the point of care and identify long-term changes in brain biochemistry in acute or chronic neurodiseases.</p

Primary Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Liver: An Uncommon Finding in Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasonography Imaging

    Get PDF
Primary squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the liver is rare tumor with an unfavorable prognosis. We report a case of advanced primary SCC of the liver arising adjacent to a nonparasitic liver cyst, invading into the right diaphragm and the right lung tissue. Contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CE-US) demonstrated unique enhancement in the late vascular phase, which was incompatible with those observed in hepatocellular carcinoma, cholangiocellular carcinoma, or metastatic adenocarcinoma. The patient underwent surgical resection of the tumor followed by systemic chemotherapy with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and cisplatin (CDDP), while radiation chemotherapy was not applied because of relatively poor performance status. Although postoperative image analysis revealed no recurrence 4 months later, the patient died 13 months after the operation from recurrence. Immunohistological analysis of the resected specimen revealed that this SCC contained many capillary endothelial vessels expressing CD31 or CD34, possibly reflecting the unique imaging pattern in the late vascular phase of CE-US, which has been reported in choangiolocellular carcinoma. In addition, we reviewed which kind of treatment would be suitable for advanced hepatic primary SCC in the literature. From the review, it could be proposed that a combination of radiation therapy, systemic chemotherapy (5-FU and CDDP) and surgical resection, if possible, is appropriate for advanced primary SCC of the liver

The sensuous secrets of shelter: how recollections of food stimulate Irish men's reconstructions of their early formative residential experiences in Leicester, Sheffield and Manchester

    Get PDF
This paper examines the intersection between food, recollection and Irish migrantsā€™ reconstructions of their housing pathways in the three English cities of Leicester (East Midlands), Sheffield (South Yorkshire) and Manchester (North). Previous studies have acknowledged more implicitly the role of memory in representing the Irish migrant experience in England. Here, we adopt a different stance. We explore the mnemonic power of food to encode, decode and recode Irish menā€™s reconstructions of their housing pathways in England when constructing and negotiating otherness. In doing so, we apply a ā€˜Proustian anthropologicalā€™ approach in framing the menā€™s representations of their formative residential experiences in the boarding houses of the three English cities during the 1950s and 1960s are examined. The extent to which food provided in the boarding houses was used as an instrument of discipline and control is examined. The relevance of food related acts of resistance, food insecurity and acts of hedonic meat-centric eating in constructing the menā€™s sociocultural identity are also explored
