Impact parameter dependence of heavy ion e+ e- pair production to all orders in Z alpha
The heavy ion probability for continuum e+ e- pair production has been
calculated to all orders in Z alpha as a function of impact parameter. The
formula resulting from an exact solution of the semiclassical Dirac equation in
the ultrarelativistic limit is evaluated numerically. In a calculation of gamma
= 100 colliding Au ions the probability of e+ e- pair production is reduced

Solar Neutrinos and the Eclipse Effect
The solar neutrino counting rate in a real time detector like
Super--Kamiokanda, SNO, or Borexino is enhanced due to neutrino oscillations in
the Moon during a partial or total solar eclipse. The enhancement is calculated
as a function of the neutrino parameters in the case of three flavor mixing.
This enhancement, if seen, can further help to determine the neutrino

HCO3−/Cl− Exchange Inactivation and Reactivation during Mouse Oocyte Meiosis Correlates with MEK/MAPK-Regulated Ae2 Plasma Membrane Localization
Background: Germinal Vesicle (GV) stage mouse oocytes in first meiotic prophase exhibit highly active HCO3−/Cl− exchange—a class of transport nearly ubiquitously involved in regulation of intracellular pH and cell volume. During meiosis, however, oocyte HCO3−/Cl− exchange becomes inactivated during first metaphase (MI), remains inactive in second metaphase (MII), and is reactivated only after egg activation. Previous work using pharmacological manipulations had indicated that activity of the MEK/MAPK signaling pathway was negatively correlated with HCO3−/Cl− exchange activity during meiosis. However, the mechanism by which the exchanger is inactivated during meiotic progression had not been determined, nor had the role of MEK/MAPK been directly established. Methodology/Principal Findings: Expression of a constitutively active form of MEK (MAP kinase kinase), which prevented the normal downregulation of MAPK after egg activation, also prevented reactivation of HCO3−/Cl− exchange. Conversely, suppression of endogenous MAPK activity with dominant negative MEK activated the normally quiescent HCO3−/Cl− exchange in mature MII eggs. A GFP-tagged form of the HCO3−/Cl− exchanger isoform Ae2 (Slc4a2) was strongly expressed at the GV oocyte plasma membrane, but membrane localization decreased markedly during meiotic progression. A similar pattern for endogenous Ae2 was confirmed by immunocytochemistry. The loss of membrane-localized Ae2 appeared selective, since membrane localization of a GFP-tagged human dopamine D1 receptor did not change during meiotic maturation. Conclusions: Direct manipulation of MAPK activity indicated that GFP-tagged Ae2 localization depended upon MAPK activity. Inactivation of HCO3−/Cl− exchange during the meiotic cell cycle may therefore reflect the loss of Ae2 from the oocyte plasma membrane, downstream of MEK/MAPK signaling. This identifies a novel role for MEK/MAPK-mediated cytostatic factor (CSF) activity during meiosis in membrane protein trafficking in mouse oocytes, and shows for the first time that selective retrieval of membrane proteins is a feature of meiosis in mammalian oocytes
Strong suppression of Coulomb corrections to the cross section of e+e- pair production in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions

Diffuse inverse Compton and synchrotron emission from dark matter annihilations in galactic satellites
Annihilating dark matter particles produce roughly as much power in electrons
and positrons as in gamma ray photons. The charged particles lose essentially
all of their energy to inverse Compton and synchrotron processes in the
galactic environment. We discuss the diffuse signature of dark matter
annihilations in satellites of the Milky Way (which may be optically dark with
few or no stars), providing a tail of emission trailing the satellite in its
orbit. Inverse Compton processes provide X-rays and gamma rays, and synchrotron
emission at radio wavelengths might be seen. We discuss the possibility of
detecting these signals with current and future observations, in particular
EGRET and GLAST for the gamma rays.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figure
Electrical spin injection and detection in Germanium using three terminal geometry
In this letter, we report on successful electrical spin injection and
detection in \textit{n}-type germanium-on-insulator (GOI) using a
Co/Py/AlO spin injector and 3-terminal non-local measurements. We
observe an enhanced spin accumulation signal of the order of 1 meV consistent
with the sequential tunneling process via interface states in the vicinity of
the AlO/Ge interface. This spin signal is further observable up to
220 K. Moreover, the presence of a strong \textit{inverted} Hanle effect points
at the influence of random fields arising from interface roughness on the

Probing the central black hole in M87 with gamma-rays
Recent high-sensitivity observation of the nearby radio galaxy M87 have
provided important insights into the central engine that drives the large-scale
outflows seen in radio, optical and X-rays. This review summarizes the
observational status achieved in the high energy (HE;<100 GeV) and very high
energy (VHE; >100 GeV) gamma-ray domains, and discusses the theoretical
progress in understanding the physical origin of this emission and its relation

A comparison of the strong lensing properties of the Sersic and the NFW profiles
We investigate the strong lensing properties of the Sersic profile as an
alternative to the NFW profile, focusing on applications to lens modelling of
clusters. Given an underlying Sersic dark matter profile, we study whether an
NFW profile can provide an acceptable fit to strong lensing constraints in the
form of single or multiple measured Einstein radii. We conclude that although
an NFW profile that fits the lensing constraints can be found in many cases,
the derived parameters may be biased. In particular, we find that for n~2,
which corresponds to massive clusters, the mass at r_200 of the best fit NFW is
overestimated (by a factor of ~2) and the concentration is very low (c~2). The
differences are important enough to warrant the inclusion of Sersic profile for

Electrical and thermal spin accumulation in germanium
In this letter, we first show electrical spin injection in the germanium
conduction band at room temperature and modulate the spin signal by applying a
gate voltage to the channel. The corresponding signal modulation agrees well
with the predictions of spin diffusion models. Then by setting a temperature
gradient between germanium and the ferromagnet, we create a thermal spin
accumulation in germanium without any tunnel charge current. We show that
temperature gradients yield larger spin accumulations than pure electrical spin
injection but, due to competing microscopic effects, the thermal spin
accumulation in germanium remains surprisingly almost unchanged under the
application of a gate voltage to the channel.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure
